Story
Native's violet eyes glittered in the moonlight as she gazed at the beautiful night sky. A breeze ruffled her fur and she sighed as she stared at her hooves. Just a week ago, her mother had sat there next to her, telling stories of days gone by. Native already missed listening to them almost as much as she missed her mother. A flashback of that horrible day raced through her mind.
"Run, Native! Keep up!" her mother called frantically. Native looked back over her shoulder as she saw the huge bear chasing after them. She looked back ahead and followed close behind her mother. Native's eyes flooded with fear and her heart was pounding hard. She looked back for one quick second and didn't notice the root lying up ahead. She tripped, skidded across the ground, and fell unconscious as her head hit the hard earth. The bear had almost caught up to them. "Native!" her mother called. She whipped around and ran full speed, stopping to protect her daughter. She stood over her and her fur bristled as the bear stood up on its hind legs. Although she was more terrified than she had ever been before, she couldn't let anything happen to Native.
Native awoke to see her mother's jaws locked onto the bear's throat. The bear tossed her off and she hit a tree. She got up and jumped on the bear from behind in an attempt to scare it off. The bear twisted around in a split second and raked its claws deep into her underbelly. Native got up as she watched at a distance and tears began to flow down her face. "Mom, run! Follow me!" Her mother stood shakily to her feet and sent a pained look at Native. "No darling, just go! Leave me!" Native's tears began to flow faster and she turned and ran further into the trees. She didn't dare look back...
Native began to sob harder than she had on that day. "It's all my fault..."she whispered to herself. She sniffled and shook her head. "No...mom wouldn't let me blame myself." She rose to her feet and headed towards the large field that lay below the ledge she was standing on. She curled up near a tree, not wanting to sleep, yet not wanting to stay awake. The breeze once again whistled through the trees and it was almost as if she could hear her mother's voice calling to her.
"Just because you can't see me...or touch me...or smell me anymore, does not mean I'm not still with you. I live on through the earth around you--the beautiful flowers, the waterfalls, the trees, the moon....but most importantly, I live in your heart, and you live in mine...and no one can ever take that away from you...
Native opened her closed eyes and smiled contentedly. She hadn't realized that she had stayed up all night until the rosy light of dawn began to peer over the horizon. She shook the grass off her fur and padded silently across the field to a small lake. She looked at the pale orange sky then at her reflection, then back at the sky. Just as a new day was being born, so a new stage of her life was beginning. Life would still continue as it had since the beginning of time. The cycle of life and death was all a part of nature, the way the earth has always worked. Everyone and everything is in existance for a reason.
"I just have to discover my reason," Native thought to herself.
Personality
Native takes after her mother, who was very in tune to nature and the earth. That is why she chose to give her the name Native Dancer. Native sees beauty and creativity in everything and believes that everything in life serves a purpose, no matter how big or small it may seem. She loves to play in the water and run through the forests. She can be shy at times, but she can also be very amiable and humorous. She isn't interested in a relationship anytime soon, but possibly in the future, she may settle down in a long-term relationship. Native's never afraid to get dirty or go on adventures, but she isn't reckless. She thinks things through before acting and uses her logic in risky situations. At times, she can be a bit stubborn but is always open to try new things and never thinks someone else's opinion is inferior to hers. Her favorite season is summer because all the earth is in full bloom and she can admire the plants in all their glory. She tends not to sleep very much, as she finds pleasure in rising with the sun and staying up with the moon. Most importantly, she always looks ahead to the future, knowing that dwelling on the past will only bring more pain. Native is neither a leader nor a follower. She sets off on her own path and follows it wholeheartedly.
Poem
The stream trickles and babbles its song,
as the voices of birds sing along.
The grass sways in the breeze,
the leaves rustle on the trees.
I spot a deer leaping across the meadow,
and soon it disappears into the forest's shadow.
The mice scurry and the chipmunks hurry,
as they prepare for the winter nights so cold and blurry.
My small hooves sink in the soft mud
and my paws move along without the slightest thud.
The gray clouds move swiftly across the sky
and warn me that a storm is nigh.
As the pure white snow begins to descend,
I am sure that the days of warmth and sun have come to an end.
The earth will soon be covered in a blanket of white,
and the cold frosty air will rule the night.
The flowers will wilt, the trees will stand bare,
no animal will stir, not fox nor hare.
The pond will transform into a sea of glass,
but I need not worry, alas!
Springtime shall arrive and the plants will revive!
Everything that was dead is now made alive.
The sun sends its rays to warm my smooth pelt,
and soon tells the ice and the snow to melt.
I bleat and prance near the river's green reeds
and watch as the wild fruits once again bear their seeds.
So my dear friends, you must always remember,
that though you feel alone in the bleak cold December,
and you ask why you should even keep trying,
when on the inside it feels like you're dying.
the sun will return and the clouds will disappear,
and though it seems far, the answer is near.
