A rant: Chat-speak, trends and utterly rude children

Postby Fiery Gatoh » Tue Mar 31, 2009 9:50 pm

Three rants in one thread:

1. Chat Speak - Why does it seem like everyone uses chat-speak nowdays? I'm not talking about the 'brb, lol, cya' type, rather I'm refering to the utterly incomprehensible form where you don't even have a clue what the other person is saying without a translator. Most people around my age (about 14) use this all the time on MSN, text, form posts and even in English class, and it drives me insane. Maybe it is just the people I know who do this, but I really cannot understand how anyone could be so illterate as to speak this way.

2. Trends - Especially the emo fad that is going around. The amount of people who are walking around at school with the heavy black makeup, dyed black hair and 'emo' belts and bracelets are seriously starting to irritate me. Whatever happened to individuality and having your own thoughts and opinions?

And finally...

3. Rude children - It is just mean, or is it now acceptable to be rude to adults and elders? I've seen so many kids who are kitted out in latest fashion or designer clothes and treat their parents in such a disrespectful manner, almost looking upon them with distain. These kids don't say please or thank you, they aren't greatful for anything and wouldn't look twice at something that isn't the latest and have a one thousand dollar price tag on it. It digusts me the way they seem to take everything for granted.

I have to agree with you :) (although we don't have any goth/emo kids at my school)

The chat speak is super annoying especially when people use it out loud T.T like a basic conversation
"Hi Emily so whats for lunch today, is it the over greased pizza?" Reply: "idk, brb i gotta use the bathroom."
Its just like, well what the heck..those terms were made for faster TYPING not language. Then theres people who use these terms under the teacher's noses so they can swear. Someday i might report them to the front office if this gets anymore annoying. oh and one last thing theres people that know all these terms but don't know simple words like "rant" or stuff like that (this post reminded me of a story)
And the rudeness, i know a person who pretty much forces her mother to do whatever this person wants. And I've seen kids at school flip each other off. It gets so annoying.

 We have pretty much the same rants

There will always be a generation gap.

Yes, I have also noticed the frightening self-destructive trend of this new century, but it is what it is.

My grandparents worked for everything they had. So did my parents- the baby boomers. For some odd reason, this generation decided they did not want their kids to want for anything, so gave them everything, creating a mob of spoiled now adults that lived off of plastic as if it's real money. The new children learn from mom and dad though and get that same rude, 'better than thou' attitude.

Reality is a harsh mistress, but quite honestly, I'm hoping for some kind of real crisis to get people to wake up and notice the others around them so we can go back to something other than dog-eat-dog mentality.
We don't bring the papers up for our neighbors anymore, that's considered 'trespassing'.
We can't help the woman who is having trouble with their two year old in the grocery store for fear of being sued for damages or yelled at for touching 'their' kid.
Learned today in my driving class that a man tried to sue the parents of the kid he hit and killed for damages to his car. Seems this knows no bounds.

I completely understand what you mean. I used to be a moderator on a game site a couple years ago and the kids there used to drive me insane. I hated trying to decode support messages like (plz i ned sum help wif....) I'm not sure that's even chat-speak as much as it's just really poor English. Other than things like lol, brb and a few other things like that I type in complete sentences in chat rooms and even on my text messages.

Emo kids seriously confuse me. Not to mention I think kids with real emotional issues become afraid to talk about them with someone because they don't want to be labeled "emo".

And as for rudeness of kids today I would say at least some percentage of that is the parents fault not all of it of course but some. For instance I was in a movie theater and there was a kid wearing those "heelies" shoes and stomping her feet. I went to get her removed and her mother had a fit. Obviously her mother didn't think that her little "darling" should be polite in a movie theater. There are many other things in a movie theater that I've seen that annoy me and they are mostly done by kids with their parents sitting right there and not saying a word. As I think I've said before I have to walk everywhere I go because we have no car. I have lost count of how many idiotic teen drivers think it's cute to scream obscenities or other stupid things like "get a car" out the window at us. Parents can't watch their children all the time so they aren't completely to blame for the actions of their rude children but I think if you teach a child there will be consequences to their actions then they are a bit less likely to be rude.

Chat-speak is quite annoying and I'm not sure if it should be counted as a blessing to be able to decipher it. I recently found a website where people can chat anonymously and a lot of those people don't type too well. Sometimes I add in the more commonly understood chat-speak for my own humor, but I don't insert any chat-speak in any serious writing.
I haven't watched TV for about 2 1/2 so I don't notice many trends until they're over. I hate shopping so if I get "emo" clothes or whatever, it isn't to my knowledge that they are defined as such.
Rudeness is pretty common for me, but I try to be a "good child" despite how my peers act. A lot of people curse, gesture to each other rudely, and stuff at school. I don't like how people say sorry while not meaning it. And I also think that people don't understand exactly what personal space is.

I can't even begin to complain about the trends. It seems as if people think they need to be like everyone else if they want to 'fit in'. My advice is to get friends from who you really are, and I don't know how many times I've had to tell people that.

As for the rude children, I'm only a child myself, 13 years. XD But I know I don't fall under that category, I'm grateful for everything my parents give me or all the opportunities they've opened for me.

So true! Chat speak get on my nerves so fast!I know a few people who don't just type chat speak but talk in it to, makes me crazy! Also this emo/latest trends/high fashion thing is really annoying, I mean, what happened to original thought? Are we all just carbon copies of some nit-wit trend now? Really?
And then there's kids like me and my friends, we're the against-the-flow-buy-all-our-clothes-at-Target people and I can't tell you how many times we've been teased and insulted for not being rich/high fashion/cool etc. Some of us can't afford $700 dollar jeans thank you! I'm fairly tall and an athlete so I've been the protector for all my friends who have been picked on and some times beaten up for not being "cool".
Really people, just because we're not just like you doesn't mean we're bad. I mean, dose Hitler ring an bells?

OMGOSH I have those exact to rants *Tackels* Thanks so much for understanding the trend thing i make my own styles and hate it witha passion when people all dress the same! I think its stupid and makes you look like a push over if you like it props to you but if not don't do it to be popular i mean its stupid for everybody to be the same it makes the world dull i make my own outfits and jelewery!

The kid thing people are so rotten my brother and i when we were poor used to stare at a static tv (you know the black and white dots when theres nothing plugged in?) for fun but now we have money ^=^ but we still treat our parents with respect i mean i saw this kid he called his mother a F*** B*** and he was like 10 because she didn't by the toy i was like O.O if i did that i would be grounded till i died and my but would be so sore itd fall off and the mother (Get this) Just says ok and tosses the toy in and the boy walks over and askes for something else really expensive no thank you or love you just cursing then asking for more!
