Maz, look at the Picture Neara posted. In the lower middle (on the brown background) you can see how the 4 toes are arranged.
Dunno what's the 'thing' in the middle though. xD

I mean, right? What else would it be?
So it's a toe. ^^

That wouldn't really make sense in my opinion, since the anatomy of a horse doesn't allow one more toe in there... It's hard to explain, but I think that toe would have to be spread away like the other four otherwise the middle-toe would take all of the weight, making the four other toes useless.

I think, it belongs to the leg, since it's not touching the ground or something...
just my theory though.
