What i did was colored on horse 2 and shaded on horse 1, or the other way around.... What over is on top, 1 or 2 set it to multiply then add a light gray for the shading. Then you can color the bottom layer and it will shade for you.

EDIT: Ok, set horse two to multiply and add the gray, then color on horse one.
