Story
We were beautiful once, the tree purred into Nirodha's ears as he watched the forest slowly die around him. One human at a time, the forest began shrinking. The trees lost their luster, the animals lost their voices, and the courage every tree imp once had faded. Closing his eyes, Nirodha turned his back to the grim site before him, and walked back into the tree. We were beautiful once... the tree whispered again. Nirodha pressed a fisted hand against the tree bark, the roar of a machine nearby warning both the tree and her imp of the impending doom that was to come.
Nirodha sat down and closed his eyes, piling through the memories he shared with the tree, starting with the first day they had met.......Young Nirodha landed on the tree brach shakily, body broken from the storm. Shivering, he pulled himself up and pressed himself against the trunk of the tree, trying to swallow the sobs. Curling into a tight ball, Nirodha attempted to hide from the world and sink into himself. Suddenly, he felt a prodding deep in His mind Hello? A soft, gentle voice asked curiously, for the tree herself was still very young when they met. who are you? Nirodha explained, "I am a failure. A forest imp without a reason to live! I let my tree die?" he sobbed agains the branches. That is terrible! the tree gasped, what happened? "Humans happened!" Nirodha sobbbed, "They cut down my tree!" that night, the tree volunteered herself as Nirodha's new tree, as her first imp died trying to defend his brother.
Nirodha exhaled a sigh as he pulled back. The memory stung for him, as it was a reminder of his banishment from his family, but the tree was very fond of that memory, as it was the beginning of a beautiful symbiotic relationship with her imp. She hummed in approval as the memory finished. Nirodha allowed a smile to play on his lips before closing his eyes and replaying another memory.....
Nirodha watched in horror as the forest around him was engulfed in flames. His eyes stung from the falling ash, and his heat was pounding likea wardrum. He could feel his tree's worry. Despite his hardest attempts to calm her, he could feel the tree attempting to resist the flames that danced around her. Help me! She cried out in anguish. Nirodha felt an overwhelming sense of loss and fear as the flames got closer. "I can't." he cried, pressing himself against the tree, "I can't. I'm not strong enough. But I will face the end with you." Pressing his body against the trunk of the tree, Nirodha closed his eyes and waited for death. However, a team of firemen came and put out the fire seconds before the tree coughs fire. Nirodha and his tree had been saved.
But it was the fact that you were willing to face the end with me that means the most, the tree whispered as Nirodha pulled back from the memory. Indeed, most imps, when in a life or death situation, chose to save their own skin versus remaining with their tree, unless they were very old.
The roar of the machine reawaken the knowledge of the peril both Nirodha and the tree were in. "I won't leave you," Nirodha assured his tree, "We will face the end together." Nirodha felt the tree's happiness engulf him, No. Nirodha. You still have your life to live. Go and live it. But I have one request! Take one of my seeds, and plant one of my offspring deep in the forest. Keep it safe...for me..... the roar of a chainsaw interrupted the tree, and Nirodha left the safety of the hollow he had taken up residence in. Gathering the seed, Nirodha watched as his tree was chopped down and swallowed up by a human machine. We were beautiful once....and we can be beautiful again.......
