History
▪ ▫ ▪

These creatures are a very old species of wolves who used to live in harmony with the rest of the world. Their land, their forest, their Home.
The Whelkon were the doctors of the world, eating whatever meat was left over from the kill of others and clearing the forest free of disease. Their own strong bodies and soul could hold against any illness.
They were free spirits, rarely seen by humans. Roaming the grass quietly, looking up at the tree tops. Whelkon love every animal and every soul.
They were born to be Guardians of their simple, yet sacred land.

Untill greedy human hands couldn't let such a creature live in peace wihout making them some sort of profit.
They were captured and borken down, not made for the life of the humans they now needed a Guardian themselves. But there were none.
Humans were an ilness the Whelkon weren't immune to.
Sadly, their sacred forests were left unprotected as they were wiped from the green surface of the earth. Carried away with their friend, the wind. As the now called Ancient Whelkon dissapheared, forever it seemed.

Only a few females and males survived, continuing to silently live a life of secret and fear.
But as the population started to grow once more, from a young age, the Whelkon were thought of the greed and might of humans.

Now they live a secret.
A secret only you know.

The Guardians need a Guardian too.
And they'll forgive us if we can let them roam their simple, yet sacred lands in peace.
Just admire from a distance and maybe one will give their soul to you.

.

Features and Info

▫ Wolf-like creatures with the lower body and legs of an Elk and the tail and head of a wolf.
▫ Long dragon-like antlers.
▫ Extremely long, furry tail, chest and legs for extreme winters.
▫ Longer, more pointy ears than the common wolf. Somewhat resemble deer ears.
▫ Markings are usualy stripes and brindle, the older and rarer Whelkon might have a single or more swirls. They will determine how ancient the Whelkon is and can be seen on only a few known individuals. (Picture above.)
▫ A quite promenant stripe can be seen under the eye. The darker the color, the older the Whelkon is. Although it's quite a common marking. On young Whelkon the stripe is usualy much lighter and on Welk it might appear it's not even there.
▫ The base and markings of the Whelkon are based on natural but usualy more vivid colors found in the forest. Browns, greys and reds are the most common. Rarer, more 'valuable' Whelkon might have a few un-natural stripes. The markings are usualy many different colors but are really just many shades of the same color (As picture above).
▫ White, black, silver and gold are very common colors, especialy on the horns, hooves and endings of fur: (Tail, legs, chest, muzzle etc).
▫ Whelkon live for about 70-80 years. (Simillar to humans, but they develop differently.)
▫ They are Omnivores (Eat meat and herbs) They never kill for prey, they eat what's left form others. They are not a common prey themselves, being so sacred and strong. Barely any animal dares to touch them.

Image
Habitat

▫ The Whelkon live in the common forests and woods.
▫ Their habitat is the same as that of a wolf's or elk's.

▫ Unsurprisingly, heir thick fur makes them adaptable to harsh and very cold winters. It's common to find these creatures in countries with heavy snowfall for 5 or 6 months. The weather does not bother them but makes it much harder to find food.

▫ Whelkon, being peacful creatures, also like to stay by large meadows, especially at night. They like being able to see their whole herd in one place and feel safer that way. They'll remain in the woods if they feel in danger though.

Image
Personallity

The Ancient Whelkon, known as the doctor and healer of the world is always known as scared to every animal in the forest.
They are calm but hard working creatures.
Whelkon are very caring and the males can be just as motherly and protective as the females. In most cases, the males will welcome orphan Welk into their families while the females are reluctant.

They are very free and untamed spirits, who flee at the unknown.
Although strong and feared themselves, Whelkon tend to be very shy and do not like change.

Finally, Whelkon are very forgiving and intellegant creatures.
They know a alot about humans, more than humans could ever find out about them.
They are fair creatures who know of things like greed and honesty, which makes them so diferent from the other forest creatures and makes them seem almost human themselves.

Image
Breeding

Whelkon females (Called Whelkan) only ever have a single offspring at a time.
The offspring is called a Welk.
The Whelkan will only have up to about 3 Welk in her lifetime.
The Welk is born most commonly male.

Twins have only occured once or twice occured.

Most Welk are born with more faded markings, no swirls and no stripe under the eye.
All this develops as it grows.
The markings stop developing at the age of 6-9 years.

After the age of 1 after being taken care of by the Whelkan mother,
The Welk stays with the father (Whelkon).
Families alwys stay together, except that the offspring and father are much closer after that 1 year of the Welk's life,
As he teaches his young about the forest, their past and life.

But the Welk always has a strong connection with it's mother and in life threatening situations turns onlyto her.

After the age of 8, the Welk is known as a Whelkon.

Image
Relationships
Whelkon are very loyal creatures, much like swans, they only have one mate and they stay with them until death parts them.
Males usualy live shorter lives so the females have to live by themselves for a few years.

When one partner dies, not necessarily from old age, the parter becomes extremely distressed,
Depression might take over for sometimes up to 3 years.

The Whelkon slowly recover but will never find a new mate, if they did not have an offspring they will stay alone but will still interact with other Whelkon, and sometimes will take care of orphan Whelkon.
The males are more likely to do this as in their natural world the female stops taking care of the Welk at age 1, the males are used to taking care of it for the rest of the offsprings life.

Whelkon are generally very loving and trusting animals who are close to everyone of their kind, sometimes forming strong bonds even with humans. But they don't like clingy people as they are uncomfortable with the attention or have a fear of being captured.

Image
Herds and Leadership

Whelkon normally travel in herds consisting of about 7-10 individuals.
These usualy consist of a few pairs of males and females and the single offspring belonging to each pair.
There might be one or two loners or orphans.

The herd is not structured, meaning there are no leaders, no followers.
There are no such things as an Alpha male or female.

All Whelkon are equals amongst themselevs and their herd, as they all play the same role in this world,
To Guard, to protect, to heal.

Although males might become a bit competitive when it comes to females but they never fight, they simply compete by trying hard to capture the Whelkans attention.

Overall they like to be close together and often join with other herds if they happen to cross their path, but as they usualy don't change their location and habitat this happens rarely.

Firstly I love your signature *-* Adorable deer.

Thanks so much :3
And I don't know how they would build fires but sure you can say that.
They don't really need fire as their bodies can handle the harsh cold, although if it's a really really freezing night I suppose we could pretend that they stayed close to a fire after some campers had left it there.

Something like that :B
