Mmm, I think I'll do a story.
As the sun rose, painting an array of beautiful soft colors throughout the sky, Marley fought against the overwhelming feeling bubbling up inside of her. Instead, she focused on the sky, contrasting magnificently with the hot red desert floor.
She felt like she was not capable of doing anything. She was crushed emotionally. But some how she found the strength to keep going. To keep running.
It had been a fairly normal day at first. The only abnormality was that it was the longest day of the year. Also, it had been Marley’s birthday. Her mate, Felix, woke her at dawn so they could watch the sun rise. Had that only been twenty four hours ago? Marley thought now.
After watching the sun rise, they scurried over to a friend’s, where they relaxed and even had a miniature party. Finally, once they were stuffed and tired out, Felix and Marley went home.
Marley stopped in her tracks. Her and Felix were stunned. Marley had to remind herself to take a breath, for she had been holding it. Felix closed his eyes.
This was not an uncommon tragedy. In the desert, there were many creatures of prey. A ransacked home was definitely not uncommon in their habitat.
“It’s ok, darling. We can find… we’ll be fine,” Felix murmured.
Suddenly, they heard a peculiar noise. Like… flapping wings? The sound pulsed, and sooner than Marley could think, a black figure appeared out of the air. Marley could not think in time. She was too slow. As soon as she had figured out what the figure was, Felix was gone. He fell into the sky, carried by the dark, horrid creature.
She had to run; her instinct called. If she had any chance, she had to leave now. Marley did not remember getting to her feet, but she was then flying through the air, each leaping giving her more hope. And then it hit her.
Sharp pains, searing into her chest. She could not see. She could not think. The sun was starting to peak from underneath the ground. In the distance, she thought she heard short hysteric sobs. She realized it was herself. Stupid, stupid, stupid, she scolded. She had to keep going, and grieve later.
So she kept going. On and on. Her thirst and hunger was growing. But soon, she halted. It seemed like there were a few goennecs on the horizon. Her sanity was at question. She was water deprived in the desert, after all. But she ran full speed toward them. And it seemed like it had not been a hallucination, but Marley was suddenly not sure what was happening.
It was pitch black. She got to her feet, disoriented, and she could not see a thing. Frustrated, Marley walked in a circle, searching for any source of light.
Her eyes were closed. Marley realized this and forced them open. Oh. Oh.
So the hallucination was not a hallucination? She thought to herself. Either that, or she was crazy for sure. Three goennecs stood before her. One male and two females.
“Oh, shhhh, she’s up,” the first female said to the others. They were inside a small cavern, and light only poured thorough a tiny opening on the west side.
“How are you feeling, darling?” The other female said. Marley was incapable of speaking. It felt like her voice was removed, leaving a scratchy feeling in her throat. She squeaked as she tried to talk.
“I think she’s lost her voice,” the first one whispered again, “When she kept calling for a ‘Felix’ last night.”
Last night? It had been dawn when she had found them. How long was she out for? She felt well rested.
“It’s ok, you will be safe with us. We’ve been wanting a child for awhile now,” the second one said.
A child? They must be crazy. But she realized that she must be very, very young in their eyes. They all were way older and one was even graying.
“How peculiar,” the male said, “my grandson is named Felix.” His voice sounded intelligent and timeless, and somehow familiar to Marley…
A few years later, these geonnecs that she now lived with were dear family to her. She really had never actually had a family like that. Her mom went mad, and her dad left and never came back when she was very young. But now she did have an actual family. Felix was the only one missing. Nights she dreaded because she would dream of him every night. She was happy in the dreams, but the pain arrived shortly thereafter once she woke. Although, she knew in her heart that it was better this way. This way, she would never forget him, as he and her lived happily in their dreams together.
And really she was perfectly happy in her new life. It felt good to be loved.~
