Background (Optional, but it gives you a better shot)
It was a night of a full moon, a male smili was standing outside a cave, his strong figure outline against the night sky
"Luna? is everything going ok?" he called into the cave
"yes,Lay, you can come in now"
Lay entered the dark cave and when his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he saw the figure of his mate and three kits lying next to her
"aren't they beautiful?" Luna asked as she licked the kits vigorously
"yes, yes they are" Lay purred happily
two of them looked just like Luna and one of them had different eyes. The other one was black like Lay but had unusual red swirl patterns on his body and face
"This one looks different" Lay said pointing on the black kit
"yes, i noticed" Luna answered "but im sure that it wont do any harm, in fact it will help camouflage when hunting"
"he will be a great hunter" Lay purred
The kit let out a loud wail and although he was newborn, he was trying to stand up but stumbled and fell on the floor. Lay let out a warm chuckle. He looked at the other two, they were busily suckling their mother. One female kit, was brown with dark stripes like Luna and the other one was a dark brown male with light stripes.
Suddenly,The darker kit stopped suckling and lay down on the floor, her breath was coming in shallow rasps
"what's happening?" Lay asked beginning to panic. Luna started licking the kit
"lick him, to let him breathe properly!" she meowed "fast!"
Lay started licking the kit as hard as he could but it was no use, the kit went limp.
Lay let out a long wail which vibrated through the cave walls
"no.no!" Luna weeped"it is rare when tree kits stay alive, this should've happened"
"i will go and bury him" Lay said in a voice full of grief
When he returned, Luna was lying with her head on her paws, staring far into the darkness
"we should name the other two" she meowed
and so they called the female Tina and the black one Mystic fang due to his unusuall pattern and sharp fangs

a week has past and it was a cool morning, Lay woke up in his nest of ferns and feathers, feeling really tired. He watched as Luna stretched and the kits were waking up.
"I want out"Fang meowed as they were starting to talk now although they made mistakes in words.
"sure" Luna answered "Lay, could you take them out for a bit, you can teach them to hunt if they dont scare away all the prey first!" she laughed
"hunt?" Tina's eyes gleamed "what is hunt?"
"lets go out and i will show you" Lay purred
When they were out, they started playing in the leaves
"Luna was right" Lay laughed "you
will scare away all the prey"
Lay heard a rustling in the bushes and saw the white tail of a rabbit. He fell into a hunter's crouch and crept up to the rabbit. Suddenly, a shrill cry pierced the air and Lay turned around to see a giant hawk swooping down on Tina, he launched across the field and onto the eagle's back but it sliced through his skin with its deadly talons. Lay crashed to the ground almost losing his senses and saw the hawk swooping into the sky with Tina in his claws. He saw Fang with a shocked expression, staring into the sky.
"what WAS that?' he gasped
"lets go home" Lay muttered unable to hide his sorrow "we cant do anything now"
"where's Tina?" Luna asked when they entered the cave "dont leave her alone, she might get in danger!"
"im sorry, Luna" Lay murmured "but a hawk took Tina"
Luna stared at him, gaping "what?" she gasped "we should help her!now!''
"its too late, she's gone" Lay muttered "its-its all my fault"
"no, it isnt your fault, you did all you can" Luna noticed the gash on his pelt "thats horrible!come, i'll treat that wound"
"When is Tina coming back?" Fang meowed, clearly not understanding what just happened
" she isn't" Lay rasped "go to sleep, at least you are safe.." he added to himself

Fang was crouching on a tree, watching down as a deer was eating grass under him. four years has passed since Fang's sister was gone and Fang was now a handsome smili and others envied him for his patterns and sharp fangs. As he was getting ready to leap, the branch broke and he went stumbling onto the forest floor and the deer darted away into the bushes. Fang gave a furious growl and headed back to his home.
"Fang?" he heard his mother call
"its me, where's dad?" he asked
"hunting, im going too. wanna come?"
Fang decided not to tell his mother about his incident with the deer.
"sure!" He meowed "lets go!''
As they walked through the woods, Fang breathed in the forest scents. Winter would be coming soon and they would need a lot of prey for the stock.
" i will try to find some prey in the field" Luna said "meet you here!''
before Fang could protest, she darted away into the field.
Fang consentrated on hunting now and not long after, he spotted a hare, instinctively, crouching down he padded slowly and when he was close enough, he leaped and caught his prey. Suddenly, a loud BANG sounded in the air. It was a gun. At first, Fang thought it was just the humans hunting for deer again but something urged him to see. As he dashed through the grass, he saw the shape of his mother sprawled on the ground
"no!" he cried as he ran towards her. Her eyes were still opened
"mom! dont die! please dont die!" he cried
"no, Fang" she rasped "you will have to go on without me"
"No!"
"take care" she let out her final breath and closed her eyes "take care..."
They will pay for this Fang thought
they will pay * * *
After Fang finished grieving, he returned to his cave, his father was there and a dead buck was lying infront of his paws.
''uh, dad?" Fang looked at his dad with sorrow in his eyes "mom is dead"
"what are you talking about?" Lay asked with a confused expression "what do you mean, dead?" he stood up
"she was hunting and then suddenly, a human shot her" Fang looked down on his paws
Lay stared at him disbelievingly and then fell to the ground.
"oh Luna" he whispered "how could this happen?"
Fang went up to him and tucked his muzzle into his dad's fur.
"im sorry" he murmured "i couldnt do anything"
"come, i want to show you something" his dad said as he stood up and dissapeared in the cave enterance.
Fang bounded up to him and tried to keep up.
"where are we going?" he panted
"you will see" his father answered.
Now, they were nearing a mountain and Fang wondered if they will be able to climb it but his father jumped easily from rock to rock on the steep mountain side. Fang followed and even though he was a good climber, he tripped a couple of times. Finally, they stopped. As Fang came to stand beside his father, a great pool of water stretced infront of them, the silver moonlight shimmering in its depths. Not a ripple passed the clear water as they stood there, frozen in time.
"wh-what is this?" Fang asked breaking the silence
"this is where the soul of a deceased Smili can meet with that of a living one" Lay whispered "now look"
Fang watched as something started to move in the depths and silver strings of water weaved into the air but not a drop scattered. Fang stood, gaping. He heard voices whisper but he could not make out what they were saying and then, the water began to part and a silver shape stepped out, Fang immediately recognized his loved mother.
"Mom!'' Fang dared to shout.
"shhhh, little one" his mother smiled "there is nothing to worry"
Fang ran up to her but then jumped back in shock as he passed right
through through Luna.
"dont worry" his mother repeated "here, we only speak"
"oh Luna" for the first time, Fang saw that his dad was standing beside him
"Lay" she murmured "Fang, how much i miss you both.."
Just then, Fang noticed a small figure standing behing Luna
"Tina!" he exclaimed
"Fang!" his sister wanted to run up to him but Luna stopped her with the tip of her tail
"i told you, Luna" she rasped gently "we only speak here"
Fang couldn't hide his joy and sorrow
"Tina, i miss you" he whispered
"i miss you too" she answered
"it is time for us to go" Luna murmured "We will meet again but for now, goodbye"
"goodbye, Luna'' Fang heard Lay whisper.
And as Luna and Tina stepped into the water, Tina gave Fang a last glance and then the water closed in behind them

Fang yawned and stood up to stretch his paws. It was winter and as Fang stepped onto the crisp snow, it gave under him and due to his short legs, he had to struggle to keep above the snow
i wont get anywhere at this pace he thought. Finally, he could feel hard ground under him and shook the snow off his pelt. He shivered as a cold breeze passed.
This will be a cold winter he thought. He was thirsty and decided to go to the stream but to his dismay, a sheet of hard ice covered it and only a trickle of water ran in the middle where the ice hasn't frozen yet. He padded softly on the ice careful not to break it but unfortunately, he was too heavy and he was plunged into the freezing water.
He thrashed in the freezing waves and as he staggered helplessly, he felt sharp teeth fasten into his sruff and he looked up to see his father pulling him out. As he plopped onto the ground, he spat out mouthfuls of water. He was freezing from nose to tail tip. He saw that his father couldnt suppress a mrrow of laughter.
"whats so funny?" he spat
"come, lets get back to the cave before you catch a cold" he chuckled.
When they were back in the cave, Fang lay down in his nest soaking.
"how did you manage to fall into the river?" Lay laughed
"I was thirsty" Fang snorted
"until the winter finishes, we'll have to eat snow i guess" he laughed again.
After Fang dried up, he decided to finish his hunting trip
"we need prey more than ever noe" he said "i will go hunt"
"ok" said Lay with a tone of humor in his voice "but be careful not to fall into the river again!"
As Fang crept in the undergrowth, he bumped into a smooth, silver pole stuck to the ground
"What is this?" he asked himself
it has human stench he thought and then he noticed another and another of the wierd poles stuck in the earth one after another which seemed to go on forever. Before Fang could think of what to do next, he heard barking behind him and turned to see a big brown creature, a dog.
this will be easyhe thought
its only oneBut to his horror, a second dog stepped out of the bushes and then another, his mouth was drooling but yet two other dogs entered the clearing. He knew that even though he was big and strong, he was no match for them. Suddenly, the first dog charged at him his teeth fastening in his hind leg. Fang hissed a protest and tried to bite the dog but a second one jumped on him and soon he was struggling under a mass of snarling and barking creatures. And just when he thought he lost it, he heard a furious hiss and one by one, the dogs were letting go and fleeing into the trees. Fang saw that it was his father who rescued him, and he blinked at him gratefully.
"thank you dad,'' he meowed "it's the second time you rescued me today"
"no problem" Lay purred "youre my son after all"
"and i didn't catch anything again" he sighed
"its ok" Lay nudged him "Lets go ho-" before he could finish his sentence, Fang heard the barking of the dogs and it was obvious that they were returning but that was not all, Fang heard humans shouting and calling to each other
"run!" his father shouted "RUN!" but it was too late, a loud BANG split the air and Fang felt a sharp stab in his side and
he could see his father fighting off the dogs before Fang fell to the ground and heaved a final breath. Images of his mother flashed in his mind, the beating wings of the hawk who took Tina, his dad struggling with the dogs and then he closed his eyes and darkness overtook him.
* * *
Fang opened his eyes and saw a bright light in front of him, at first he thought he was dead but then he realized it was the sun. Slowly, Fang stood up and looked around, he saw grass and a lake.
Im free! he thought as he bounded forward and then BOOM! he crashed into something solid. He shook his head to clear it but he didn't see anything
what is this? he thought, bewildered and then he saw his reflection on this invisible wall. As he looked around, he realized that he was trapped and then he saw them. Dozens of humans pressing their faces against the transparent walls, there were adult humans, human kits, humans everywhere! Rage overtook him, he let out a roar which vibrated against the walls. He saw the humans gasp but only to lean closer, frustrated, he plopped down on the grass and he realized how tired he was. Not after long, he drifted off to sleep.
He opened his eyes and found himself in an open clearing with birds singing in the trees and prey rustling in the bushes, he knew he was dreaming. A lithe shape of a smili appeared, outlined in silver. She padded up to him stepping lightly as if she were flying. The sweet scent of his mother was unmistakable.
"mom!" Fang cried out "im so glad to see you!"
"i have come to tell you something" she meowed inher soft voice "listen to me Fang"
"how is dad?" Fang interrupted "is he alright?"
"do not worry, my son" she murmured "he is safe."
"now listen" she continued "Sleepless nights await you, beware someone you think you can trust"
"what?" Fang asked desperately "i dont understand!"
"Betrayal awaits you" she rasped "Remember my words"
"no!" Fang cried "Don't leave! i dont understand!"
But his mother's shape began to fade and as he stared in agony he screamed
"no!"
"wake up, you lazy furball!" a voice startled him and he quickly jumped up from his sleep, he could see the face of a pretty smili, her markings looked like feathers and her sweet voice echoed in his ears
"wh-who are you?" he stammered
"my name is Maya!" she meowed "who are
you?"
"im Fang" he stood up to shake the dust off his pelt
"you're new here aren't you?" she asked curiously
"i guess so" he muttered "do you know how to get out of this place?"
"of course i do!" she exclaimed
"really?" Fang couldn't believe it "where?"
"i cant show you now" she shuffled her front paws on the ground "how about tomorrow morning?"
"but why?" Fang asked, surprised "i want to go now!"
"no!" she exclaimed suddenly "i said tomorrow!"
"ok, ok" Fang was taken aback
"rest and eat now" she meowed
"eat?" he echoed "what is there to eat here?"
just as he asked that, a door at the back opened and a human stepped in, threw a large piece of meat and went away
Fang realized his stomach was growling with hunger and he quickly started gulping down the flesh
"hungry aren't you?" Maya laughed "thank you for offering to share" she added pointedly
Fang realized he made a mistake "want some?" he asked
"thanks" Maya muttered as she started ripping the meat
After his good meal which, in fact, was nothing compared to the soft, juicy meat of the prey he caught in the forest, he lay down heavily on the ground, his stomach full.
"what are those transparent walls and all the humans?" he asked Maya
"transparent walls?" she stared at him confused "you mean glass"
"glass?" Fang asked, bewildered
"yes, you are in a zoo" she said "it's where people come and look at you, i dont know why so don't ask!" she laughed
"Wierd.Where do you come from?" he asked her "and why don't you run away if you know how?"
"well" she meowed quietly "the truth is, i was born in captivity..."
"you mean you were born HERE?" Fang exclaimed
"yes, i was" she murmured "I-I dont want to talk about it"
"oh, im sorry" Fang muttered
"why don't you tell me
your story?" she asked, clearly trying to change the subject
"well, i live with my dad, my brother died when he was born and my sister was taken away by a hawk" Fang stared ahead picturing the great wings of the savage bird "and then the humans shot my mother...."
Maya looked at him with big, sad eyes
"im so sorry" she murmured
"and then i was attacked by dogs and my father came to save me but i got shot with something really sharp" he stopped as Maya interrupted
"a tranquilizer" she muttered darkly "sorry, continue please"
"then i fell and i didnt see much except my dad struggling with a mass of snarling dogs..."
"so you're the only one left" she meowed quietly
"NO!" Fang exclaimed flexing his claws into the ground "my father isn't dead!"
"Im sorry Fang, I didnt mean to" she stammered
"no,
i'm sorry" Fang relaxed "i'm tired, i will sleep" he meowed as he could not stand the memories anymore
* * *
As Fang woke up, he looked around in confusion but then remembered where he was. He saw humans staring at hima nd he let out a growl as he dissapeared behind the bushes to stay out of sight. Suddenly Maya almost crashed into her
"whoa!" he exclaimed
"sorry!" she muttered
"where have y ou been?" he asked
"uh" she shuffled her paws like when she didn't whant to leave right away "nowhere, why don't we leave now?"
He looked at her doubtfully. Why did she seem so nervous?
"why would the humans keep us here if they know we can go out?" he pressed
"they don't know" she mumbled
"alright then" he looked into her eyes "I trust you"
She looked at him and Fang thought he saw sorrow in her eyes
"let's go"
Maya led him to a small opening at the back of the "zoo" cage.
"quick!" she instructed "get in!"
Fang looked at the hole. It looked too small for him but he did what he was told. As he squeezed in, he suddenly found himself in a big opening with hard, metal floor and cages plastered on the walls. He felt Maya fall in behind him
"follow me" she meowed
She led him into a room with a large metal box in the middle
"get in"
Fang ddn't have any choice but to step inside the box
"what am i doing?" Maya murmured to herself
"Fang! get ou-"
It was too late, the cage closed with a snap trapping Fang
Fang stared through the bars in agony
"you knew this!" he growled "traitor!"
"im sorry!" she cried "im so sorry! They would have killed me!"
The human looked down at me and then at Maya
"good" he rumbled "very good"
"no" Maya whispered although the human could not understand her "this is not what i wanted"
Suddenly, she jumped on the human but he was faster, he took something sharp out of his pocket that looked like a needle and stabbed it into Maya's side
"NO!" Fang screamed
The human padded up to Fang's cage and let out a low laugh, then he picked it up and the next minute Fang found himself in a huge truck, still in that stinking cage
Fang felt the truck pull to a stop, it has been a couple of hours since they left. The human came out and took Fang's cage out too then carried him inside a big building. Fang has never seen anything like it. It was shaped like a cone and the walls were not hard but were made out of colorful cloth which started from the top and hung down to the bottom where it was held in place with metal posts. When they entered, Fang saw colorful strings and decorations everywhere but then, just when he thought everything was not that bad, he was thrust into another cage in a small room and Fang recognised the smell of other animals; horses, weasels, rabbits, camels, bears and even tigers and a lion!
He looked around but there was no one in sight but when his eyes adjusted to the dim light he could make out the shapes of different animals and he gasped in horror as he identified the muscular body of a lion. To his relief, all animals were in cages.
"who are you?" a voice rumbled and Fang's mouth dropped open when he realised it was the lion
but lions can't speak he thought
"welcome, youngster" the lion went out "welcome to circus"
Fang noticed that he had a bad accent
"where?" he asked cautiously
"circus.." the lion said "there's no way out and the people treat us like useless beasts" he sighed
"b-but i can't stay here!" Fang exclaimed, his fear rising "i have a home, my forest!"
"no way out" the lion repeated and shook his massive head. Fang noticed a big, brown bear in the distance, in a cage. He was lying down in the corner, his sides heaving. The lion looked at the bear too
"he give up now" he said "I give up too"
"but I won't give up!" Fang growled "i will find a way out!"
"small and foolish" the lion chuckled
"how-how can you speak?" Fang asked, changing the subject
"You think lion can not speak?" for a second, Fang thought he had angered him but then his gaze softened "lion can not speak your language like other animal, I used to be traveller, I know many tongues"
Just then, the door opened and a human stepped in, he opened the door of the lion's cage. Fang thought the human did not stand any chance against him but to his surprise, the lion did not protest and simply followed the human casting Fang a sad look.
The door opened with a creak, not a long time has passed since the human took away the lion and now they came back.
"today not many people" he rumbled "your turn now"
As the lion went back to his cage, Fang noticed deep, white scars on the mighty creature's side but the human was already opening his cage. He put a hoop on his neck which was attached to a stick he held, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get close enough to bite him.
Fang looked around, gaping. They were in a big room and there were humans everwhere, they were shouting and claping so hard that Fang felt his ears would burst
"Ladies and Gentlemen!" he heard the human announce "presenting you, the one and only, Black Jack!"
what?! Fang thought My name is Fang!"
Fang looked around looking for a way to escape but he realised they were in a really big cage. The human went up to him, holding a wip in his hand. A growl rose in Fang's throught but at the same moment he felt the wip hit him. He yelped in pain and fell to the floor, licking his wound. The human barked an order and Fang saw a stool next to him, he decided one scar is enough
how could I be doing this? he thought and sat obediently on the stool
When Fang returned, his muscles were aching. He was forced to jump through burning hoops, jump from chair to chair, balance on ropes and other things, he has earned more scars during this
"you did well for first time" he heard the lion say "i get more wound when I was new"
"and you do this every day?" Fang asked feeling pity for the lion, he nodded
"I-I have to rest" Fang meowed and lay down, closing his eyes
* * *
A couple of weeks had passe since Fang came to the zoo, all his hopes of escaping were gone, he lived from cage to cage and was fed disgusting hard meat. This morning, he awoke when he heard a scuffling in the entrence and raised his head. It grew louder and louder and a shape burst into the room
"Fang! I cant believe I found you!" Fang quickly recognised the sweet voice
"Maya!" he exclaimed "how d-"
He broke of as he saw her gazing at the lion in horror
"don't worry" Fang reassured her "he won't hurt you"
"I will not hurt" the lion said as he opened his eyes, he saw Maya's eyes widen in surprise
"yes, he can talk" Fang said and then added "in our language"
"i-im sorry" Maya muttered "I betrayed you"
"It's ok" Fang murmured "I understand"
She looked at his scars "what did they do to you?"
"there's no time for stories now, the human can come any minute" he meowed "why did you come?"
"To save you of course, silly!" she laughed "so here's the plan, after I free you, we can travel one on ofe those big, loud things...trains i think. I've been watching them for a while and noticed that the blue one goes in the direction of the forest, we could jump off in time"
Fang stared at her wordlessly "are you crazy?" he snapped "we can get killed!"
"you will get killed if you stay!"
"fine! we'll try, let me out first"
Maya tugged at the lock with her teeth and then it broke with a "snap"
Heavy footsteps sounded in the distance "let's go!" Maya whispered "fast!"
"no, wait!" Fang said as he started for the lion's cage. The footsteps were becoming louder, Fang grasped at the lock with his powerful jaws
"it's stuck!" he yelled
The footsteps were closer and suddenly the door opened and a big human stepped in.
"HEY!" he shouted but to Fang's relief, the lock gave in and the lion was free
"run!" Maya screamed as she headed towards the exit but Fang was not in a hurry to leave. He pounced on the human and battered him with his paws
"this is for mom!" he yelled as he swiped a powerful claw
"this is for dad!" he swiped again
"and this is for all the pain you caused me!" he aimed a final blow and then raced after Maya and the lion
To his relief, the door of the big cage in which the show was held, was opened. As they ran out into the open, Fang gulped in the fresh air which he hasn't felt for days.
"we've got to hurry" Maya meowed "the train will leave soon"
They scurried after her and he had trouble catching up with the lion since his short legs could not carry him fast. Fang saw humans staring at them as they scattered in different directions, finally they reached the station, the train was leaving
"hurry!" he shouted to the others over the loud, rumbling sound. The ground shook beneath their paws as the train started to move, they were catching up to it now. Finally, Fang was close enough to jump on, then he helped the lion up up but Maya was still running, her short paws failing her
"faster!" Fang shouted "you can do it!"
She made a last effort as she hauled herself up and held on to the side, the train was going at full-speed now. Fang sank his teeth into her scruff and pulled her up. She sat, breathing heavily
"thanks" she murmured as she licked his ear
"you're welcome" he purred
The following morning, Fang woke up feeling exhausted as if he didn't sleep at all. He dreamt of cages and humans and lions, he had a nightmare. Suddenly, as Fang looked around, he could recognise the grassy slopes and thick woods, it was his birthplace, his home
"Maya!" he prodded her "wake up! we're here!"
She bolted up, looking around
"wow" the whispered "this looks so....free, no cages, no fences oh Fang, this is perfect"
Fang didn' t want to tell her of all the dangers and the fight for survival, she would find out herself, anyway it was worth it
The lion was sitting up straight
"remember I this place" he murmured "I went here"
"you've been here?" Fang asked astonished
"no time for this" Maya interrupted "we have to get off"
Fang nodded as he padded towards the edge, as he looked down, he thought it impossible to jump off but surely they couldn't have come here for nothing!
Before he got ready he felt Maya brush past him and shout
"here we goooo..." as she jumped off the train
Fang jumped after her and landed hard on his side, the lion jumped next and soon they were all safe and sound on the grassy floor. It was so good to feel it again, the air, the space, the freedom! He jumped around like a baby kit
"I need go" the lion said happily "thank you, for all"
"you're leaving?" Fang asked
"My path is different than yours" he said "good-bye, we will meet again"
Fang stared after him as he dashed into the plains
Finally Fang was home, he returned and he knew he was safe . He turned around and he saw a muscular shape outlined against the sky. Fang respected and feared the lion now, he was not that scrawny creature Fang first met, he was a beuty. He watched as
the lion threw back his big, golden head and let out a roar
