Leopard geckos don't require that much care, I have friends who have leos who live In non heated tanks with bark and have a super basic setup and have been alive for about 10 years. My guide is just a simple guide for people who want a simple pet ;)

Sounds like your friends don't take good care of their geckos, even if they have made it to 10 years. Reptiles require specific temperatures, and a heat gradient, and bark is not a suitable substrate for leos. I've seen people keep 2 inch standard goldfish alive in bowls for 10 years, and they most definitely are not okay, even though they have managed to make it to 10 years. Leos are already fairly simple to care for, which makes them a great beginner reptiles, so if you friends feel the need to cut back even further, then maybe they need to to reevaluate if they have the time, patience, and responsibility to properly look after their pets.

Thank you. My point exactly. And if you haven't done proper research, just get information from friends, you might as well kiss your gecko goodbye.

Or wait. Maybe you shouldn't. Because it's not healthy.

This is my point. Some day,I will be opening a healthcare and well being center for geckos and other reptiles to owners who have no sense in keeping one of these pets. I will give small healthcare lessons, like clipping claws, because sometimes you can clip them yourself, and feeding, for people who think these pets are simple and easy!

They don't require a ton of care or a lot of area, but your friend's leopard geckos are NOT happy or healthy. They're just lucky that their geckos haven't died without a heat source.

I fight for the people who have a heart and do their research before they get a pet that they will have to care for. They research everything, and want to be sure they have all the supplies they need.

Leopard geckos die without a source of heat, and heat lamps AND heating pads sustain a proper heating source. That should keep it at a resonable temperature for a DESERT gecko.

So,yes. Everything on my list is completely necessary for a leopard gecko to be happy and healthy.

I need help with my basilisk's tank tempature. It is supposed to be 70-80 , but it is going to the high nine's. I tried spraying the tank with cool water, cleaning it, turning the light of for 10 minutes but nothing works. Any suggestions?

Erp. Yesterday I was without internet.

Anyways, the little beardie is still alive? Wow. Reptiles are hardy animals. Anyways, treating wounds with hydrogen peroxide and painkiller-free triple antibiotics should keep them from getting infected or the like until you can afford a trip to a reptile vet. I'm not just taking things from the internet and spouting them off here, either - I treated a rat bite on my ball python that way.

And wait - someone's not giving their leopard gecko a heat source? They need one, it isn't optional, unless you can keep your house at the high seventies - mid eighties(fahrenheit) year round.

My geckos are doing well..haven't posted here in a while.
Do you guys know of any places that would sell sphagnum moss or something that I can put in a little moist container to help them shed? I've run out and am not sure where to get some. :c

Or is there any other substance I can use to aid in shedding?

Thanks! <3

Petsmart, Petco, I would think most pet stores sell it. Not sure about non-pet stores, though.

You could use damp paper towels, that always works well.

Oh do they? I've never seen any at my petsmart..I'll check it out though. Mine have gotten through two or three sheds without some, though I'd been spraying their tank with some water to keep it moist. I may try the towels if I can't find any moss. :3

The basking spot of a green basilisk should be in the 90's while the cool end should be 70F-80F range. Where are you taking your temperatures and are you taking them with an accurate thermometer? If the entire cage is staying that warm, then you need a lower wattage, or you should go ahead and upgrade to an adult tank. Store bought 120gal are good for adult basilisks, unless you have an exceptionally larger one, which might need even more room. A 120 will give you more height to help control temperatures, and more width to make it conformable for your basilisk to turn around as an adult. Building your own enclosure that size is much cheaper though, and you could probably even manage to make it a bit longer(2x the length of you lizard is what most aim for on length, so about 6 feet) and a bit taller(since they are arboreal).

Even if the house was kept at a constant temperature, there is no cool zone and no gradient to allow the gecko to regulate it's own body temperature.

As mentioned most pet stores sell it in the reptile/amphibian section. Coconut fiber, cypress mulch, or paper towels can also be used instead of moss. Paper towels are the safest, because they aren't as easily eaten as loose materials.

I would think that if the temperature was more of an in between between the warm and cool temps, they wouldn't need a gradient, it would already be regulated.
Of course this is coming from information about corn snakes, corns and leos are very different.

If there wasn't a gradient and for some reason, the gecko got too hot it would have no way to cool down and would end up overheating. My leopard gecko warms up until she's too hot, then she'll step out of her hide, take a drink and go sleep in the cool side of the tank for an hour. If she didn't have that she'd probably walk around aimlessly or lay in the middle of the tank looking sorry for herself.
