She's two years old actually. She was staying with someone other then her owner for at least a few months though and from what I gather, she spent most of the time locked up in their backyard with little interaction. I don't believe she was taken for walks or anything and when she was bad at least one of them would spank her. The spanking is the primary reason she came to us. I have seen her energy level go way down in the past two weeks she's been with us. She spends most of the day on the couch with me when we're not on our walk or playing in the backyard. I'll definitely try what you said though.

My retriever cross is a very cool dog who seems to have been born to please. He does sit, down, and stay with flying colors. He doesn't know many cute tricks, since he is neither athletic nor inclined to offer behaviors, but he'll give you his paw, step up with his front feet, target things with his nose, and lay his head on his feet on command. I spend a lot of time training "heel" with him. He knows the basic concept very well, so it's mostly a matter of learning how to communicate more effectively and continuing to work in very distracting places, like obedience class. 360 turns, especially with the dog on the inside, are our kryptonite.

Any tips for a nice trick that is suitable for performing in a nursing home? My dog is a very top-heavy fellow not inclined to sitting up, rolling over or anything similar.

Well, i am glad you have her now, she will get the attention she needs with you, it seems. :) Also, if that doesnt seem to work, feel free to come back and i can try give you some other things you can do.

Hmm... Well, i like the tricks you have taught him so far, as those are always good ones for nursing homes... Maybe teach him to catch treats? It can be a nice way to show people that he is cooridinated. It can also be entertaining to watch, and do from far dstances.? If you would like to know how you can teach him this, just let me know. :3

My dog has the same problem... if you show her you hand, she my be thinking your telling her to do shake, and expects a reward. Dont you reward her for doing it when you tell her not to. Also, do not congratulate her, or hold out your hand to catch her paw when she does that. It will jump make her believe that she is supposed to do it, even more. Just say no, every time she does it, and sooner or later she should get a hang of it. :) Hope this helps<3

Juke, my three year old German Shepherd, knows the basic commands. However he does have his own 'tricks'.

Juke knows:

Sit.
Stay.
Come.
Fetch.
Pick up. (Pick up an object)
Drop. (Drop an object in his mouth.)
Lie down.
Shake.
Roll over. (He has a spazz when he does it. LOL.)
Kiss. (He will lick you.)
Poke. (Pokes something with his nose.)

My newest addition to the family, Luna my mutt, is still young to do all the fancy tricks. For now she knows the basic tricks and commands.

Luna knows:

Stay.
Come.
Fetch.
Sit. (Only does if you have a reward.)

Despite the somewhat 'impressive' tricks my dogs can do, they are dang right lazy, it's a mission trying to get their attention. When I'm teaching Juke he will get really bored and look away, or he will just stare at the treat blankly until I give it to him. >.>

My dog is very smart and trains very easily. She can do the basic commands, like "heel' and "sit", "lay down" etc.

It's the things that she learns to do by herself that's crazy.

She can JUMP. She can jump from all four feet from the floor to the table in one leap, and she's only 10 inches tall.
She can open things, get under things, over things, through things, it's crazy. She's Houdini I swear. She herds our chickens, -which scares them to death,- into tight little groups and doesn't let them leave. She's an egg snatcher, she can pull an egg out of the coop at lightning speed and and be delicate enough not to break it it. She chases flashlights, like a cat. She "yodels" like a Basenji. She also climbs.

I think she's part feline.

No matter what we do, she's smarter than our newest idea to keep her out of trouble. She's even been working on opening doors. She obeys commands until we're gone, and then she tears around the house like nut. We have a kennel for her but she's chewed through two of them.

Any ideas on how to calm her down? XD

Ok, Im not really sure what i can tell you then... A good way to make sure it dosnt hurt as bad is to keep her nails nice and trimmed though, because then it may not hurt as bad, if she paws at you. Sorry i couldnt help as you where hoping...

Well, for bordom, new treats can always help, and prazing them like crazy can get there attention a little more as well.^_^ You have some very talented dogs. Also, Dont give him the treat if he doesnt do the trick, because then he will just keep staring, as he does. And if you dont, then great job. :P

Bahaha, im sorry, but i laughed reading this. ^_^ Sounds like a sweet, and energetic dog...
Have you tried medal kennels? Also, a "babysitter" may help as well, if you had a neighbor, or friend that could stay and watch her?

Keeping toys and bones out is another thing that could keep her busy.... If you need more information, let me know. :P

I have taught my little Chihuahua Pomeranian mix some basic things. Although, she still doesn't quite get them sometimes. She is still learning.

Kylee
Sit
Shake
Lie Down
Jump (She jumps threw a hoop)
Crawl

My other Chihuahua, Kaiah, on the other hand....

Kaiah
Sit
Jump (Jumps threw a hoop. But she only does it when she feels like it, even if I have treats. So I think I may use her favorite toy, a small chewed up stuffed raccoon, she doesn't let anyone touch it. xD)

My lab, Karley, she is getting better.

Karley
Sit
Lie Down
Drop It

Any suggestions on what I should teach Kylee next?
