BOLD is real meat.
ITALICS are things that a carnivore wouldn't need in such large amounts, some people argue that carnivores don't need them at all.
BLUE are things that are suspicious, such as "natural flavor" (could be ANYTHING).
Remember that the higher up a product is mentioned, the more of it there is in that ingredient. Looking at the ingredients, it's not hard to see what food clearly ranks superior, and this is just for
cats.
A look into ingredients and how to tell the difference in quality. Obviously looking from Purina to EVO, there is a huge difference in what's in the food and that is what you want to look for. If you switch from a food made of mostly "chicken byproduct meal" to a food made of "turkey byproduct meal"... well, of course there won't be much change if any at all. Switching from "chicken byproduct meal" to 3-5 ingredients of
real meat on the other hand...
EDIT: For example, the brands you've listed...

The added color is
red, for things that are red flags and should be avoided at all costs. Dogs cannot digest corn nearly as readily as peopel believe... we as humans can't even, nor can cows. By-product meals are also bad news.
It's not much of a surprise you didn't see any difference in your dogs switching around from bad brand to bad brand. Like I said that's like switching your favorite food from candy to twinkies to cake to cookies... either way it's still not healthy OR what you need. Same with dogs.
