Midnight Rose
Story:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Midnight Rose slid out of bed, reaching for her tiny Easter basket. It was the middle of the night, but she had agreed to join the Easter Bunny team this year. The world was much too big for a single bunny to deliver all the goodies.
She hopped out of her dwelling, quickly eating a carrot on the way out. She glanced around, and spotted a rather promising house. Eager to get started, she quickly darted to the dark doorstep and set down several chocolate eggs. Excited, she went from house to house, gently depositing her gifts.
At one of the houses, the lights were still on. She could see a few human children eagerly peeking through the window. Midnight Rose realized with a jolt that they were searching for her, the Easter Bunny. (Or one of them, anyway). She saw how eager they looked, and she couldn't bear to disappoint them. So, when she went to their doorstep, she made sure to hop right into view. The children squealed with delight, and she flicked an ear at them in acknowledgement. Midnight Rose enjoyed their excited cheers at her arrival.
There were several other houses with children who had stayed up late to catch a glimpse of the Easter Bunny. At each one, she put on a more elaborate performance. At first a small hop of delight, but before long she was posing and strutting around as if she was on the red carpet. She was determined to be the most popular Easter bunny everywhere. Before long, she was no longer subtle about her giving. The human children might as well reward her for her hard work.
Oh, how they rewarded her. Several hours before dawn, as Midnight Rose was reaching the end of her route, a few children even ran out of their houses to come pet her and give her fresh carrots. Later on, even more children came out to pet her. However, she sniffed disdainfully and refused to let them touch her until they gave her a large bundle of carrots. Before long, she was getting more carrots than she was giving out candy. Yet even a basket overflowing with carrots did not satisfy Midnight Roses' desire for more. She was going to not only be the most popular bunny, but also the richest and most well-fed.
She could tell that the children from earlier houses had called their friends and announced her arrival, since several houses suddenly became filled with light as she approached them. She was excited to know that she was the talk of the neighborhood.
At last, she reached the last house on her route. All that was left in her basket was a single chocolate egg. She hopped up to the house, which didn't happen to be illuminated. Deciding she wanted to end her Easter on a high note, she knocked on the door. This last egg wasn't going to go without a little appreciation and a lot of carrots.
She strained to hear the footsteps of children eagerly running to the door, or perhaps even an older person who still appreciated the Easter spirit. However, the house was silent. She knocked a little louder, acutely aware that if the other bunnies on the team knew what she was up to, they would be very disappointed in her.
Suddenly, she heard a rustle behind her. She spun around, only to find a young boy with a net in his arms flying in the air towards her. She yelped, but it was muffled as the boy captured her. He scooped her up in the net, chuckling.
"Now you have to give me candy all year long!" he smirked slightly as he stared at her. Midnight Rose struggled, but she found that she couldn't move. She realized with a pang of guilt that the boy would never have known she was coming unless someone else had told him. And that someone else wouldn't have known if she hadn't been such a show-off.
"It doesn't work that way! I only have one chocolate egg left! Let me go!" Midnight Rose cried out in despair. The boy growled under his breath, clearly angry that she didn't have a bigger offering for him. Suddenly, the lights from his house came on, and the front door opened.
"Benjamin Fredrick!" a woman stood in the door. "What is all this commotion? It's nearly 4:00 in the mor-" she dropped off, spotting Midnight Rose's large bundle of carrots. "I can't believe it! How'd the Easter Bunny know that I love vegetables?" She grabbed Midnight Rose from Benjamin's hands, quickly untangling her and relieving her of her huge basket of carrots. She set Midnight Rose gently on the ground. "Happy Easter, young bunny!" she said with a smile as Midnight Rose recovered from her momentary shock. "Thank you so very much!"
Midnight Rose raced back home as fast as she could. She had just lost all the carrots she had collected, and she felt absolutely awful. All she had gained on her journey had been false pride. She shook her head, feeling ashamed of herself. The best Easter bunnies, she realized, gave without expecting anything back. Gave in secret, so that they wouldn't be praised by the humans. They captured the true spirit of Easter: giving. Not giving and expecting something in return, simply giving because they wanted to make others happy.
Midnight Rose vowed that the next Easter, she would be sure to stick to the shadows, and stay true to the Easter spirit.
