How about using just the colors and have a completely different pattern? It's mostly the coloration I desire.

I find it hard to copy the design of dragoncave dragons without having wings in the lineart. Putting the wing's pattern onto the main body makes it even more different. I suppose it best just to use the refs as inspiration than anything else. -_-
