Blue Buffalo itself is not something I'd recommend over say Taste of The Wild, Orijen, and such. However, I would recommend Blue Buffalo Wilderness, the grain free variant.

Bad Habit wrote:Blue Buffalo is NOT as good as everyone would have you believe. My dog, who eats a max of 1/4th cup of ToTW ate a cup to a cup and a half a day on Blue Buffalo. He powered through that food, and his coat was not nearly as nice and shiny, and he gained like 2lbs, going over his ideal weight. The bag of food started smelling musty very quickly, so I vacuum sealed it into smaller bags in hopes of keeping freshness, which didn't help. I believe I ended up giving the last of the bag to my mum as a top dressing for her
dog's food, to encourage her dog to eat(her dog has cancer).

As of late, I've been making "dog soup", which is home made soup stock with various bits of freezerburnt meat and veggies, loads of garlic and rice. My dog gets three tablespoons of this mix once a day, and he's down to maybe 2 tbsps of kibbles a day, with no ill affects. Except his breath, which stinks because of the garlic, LOL.

We don't have the time to make dog soup or anything like that, though, and don't have the money to spend on Orijen and what have you, so I dunno what we should be feeding him if Blue isn't good... any suggestions? We still feed Blue Buffalo, but is there a better brand around the same price? So far, Blue is the only thing he's enjoyed eating and it's seems to keep him quite healthy, much more than when he was on Natural Balance and/or Science Diet (from the shelter, we got a free bag). I wish we could make dog soup and things like that, though.

I don't know about your area, but here, Blue Buffalo is actually more expensive than Taste of the Wild, Orijen or Acana. For a 5lb bag(all I buy, since I've got a little dog), Blue is 21.99, ToTW is 16.99, Orijen and Acana are around 18.99. Not that a few dollars difference would make my desision, I have nothing but good things to say about ToTW. I fed Acana for a while, but my dog didn't like the small kibbles. He's a big dog, dag nabit, and he deserves big dog kibbles!!

I can see how dog soup wouldn't be for everyone - it's stinky, a pain in the rear to make, and takes up loads of storage space - but it only takes about an hour to make a giant pot of it. It's something my family started because of my mum's dog; her appetite is gone, and she has medications she needs to take on a full stomach. A scoop full of soup on kibbles and Rickards gobbles down the whole bowl. I like it because I know exactly what my dog's eating since I make it and only use whole foods, and it's by and far cheaper than buying wet dog food from the store. I can also tailor the soup to my dog's tastes and needs.

If anyone's interested in some tips/tricks for making dog soup, feel free to message me.

I am lost with dog foods cause we live in a small small town and we don't have a pet store at all and we don't have time for soup either and I don't think we have Blue Buffalo Wilderness but next time we go to the store I'll look for it if I can't find it then I'll just read the ingredients on some other dog foods.

I think we do Pedigree? Or maybe not. >.< I'll have to remember. My dog's pretty healthy and fit, and the only problem we've had with her is getting fleas. I never realized that there was so many toxins in a dogs diet! I must be more careful from now on! :3

Thanks everyone for the help ^^

Yea, I wish we could buy Orijen for our dog...but, the only place that sells Orijen close to my area is a nice, but extremely overpriced dog boutique that is appropriately located in one of the wealthiest places in America...it's close and they have really good stuff, but it's pretty much 5x more than it should cost.

Yeah, we have one of those too. I call it the "ridiculously expensive dog food store", but they sell other things. I looked at a collar there, it was 45$, then went to a regular pet store, found a much nicer, much sturdier made collar for less than half the price. Our dog boutique doesn't even sell Taste of the Wild or Blue Buffalo, because she can't get a contract with suppliers of either, because of her mark up.

Talk to your local pet store, and ask if they'd consider carrying something like ToTW, Orijen or Acana. A lot of them are willing to try new products, or will bring in testers of the product if they're able to see if people would be interested in it. I know my local pet store started carrying ToTW because I went in just about daily asking if they carried it. As soon as they brought it in, I switched from Acana to ToTW and never looked back. The only time I go into the ridiculously expensive dog food store anymore is when they have seasonal clearances, and you can pick up a formerly 40$ collar for 5$... because it's last season's design

Alright, so I learned we feed our dog Purina Puppy Chow, since she's just a small beagle, but still basically a pup. I don't think that, since I skimmed it, I saw Purina. Would Purina be a good chose for my dog? She's pretty active as it is, and we haven't had any problems with her. (As said before. xD)

Darkstar and iBeebs - I'm sorry, but Purina is absolute crap and they don't need any more money as it is. If I could give you a grocery brand to look for, please try Eukanuba, second in line would be Iams. They (Eukanuba) also has both a Naturally Wild line which is the best type of food compared to the more "high end" foods we talk about; and they have a good number of breed specific formulas.
