He powered through that food, and his coat was not nearly as nice and shiny, and he gained like 2lbs, going over his ideal weight. The bag of food started smelling musty very quickly, so I vacuum sealed it into smaller bags in hopes of keeping freshness, which didn't help. I believe I ended up giving the last of the bag to my mum as a top dressing for her
dog's food, to encourage her dog to eat(her dog has cancer).
As of late, I've been making "dog soup", which is home made soup stock with various bits of freezerburnt meat and veggies, loads of garlic and rice. My dog gets three tablespoons of this mix once a day, and he's down to maybe 2 tbsps of kibbles a day, with no ill affects. Except his breath, which stinks because of the garlic, LOL.

We still feed Blue Buffalo, but is there a better brand around the same price? So far, Blue is the only thing he's enjoyed eating and it's seems to keep him quite healthy, much more than when he was on Natural Balance and/or Science Diet (from the shelter, we got a free bag). I wish we could make dog soup and things like that, though.

I don't know about your area, but here, Blue Buffalo is actually more expensive than Taste of the Wild, Orijen or Acana. For a 5lb bag(all I buy, since I've got a little dog), Blue is 21.99, ToTW is 16.99, Orijen and Acana are around 18.99. Not that a few dollars difference would make my desision, I have nothing but good things to say about ToTW. I fed Acana for a while, but my dog didn't like the small kibbles. He's a big dog, dag nabit, and he deserves big dog kibbles!!
I can see how dog soup wouldn't be for everyone - it's stinky, a pain in the rear to make, and takes up loads of storage space - but it only takes about an hour to make a giant pot of it. It's something my family started because of my mum's dog; her appetite is gone, and she has medications she needs to take on a full stomach. A scoop full of soup on kibbles and Rickards gobbles down the whole bowl. I like it because I know exactly what my dog's eating since I make it and only use whole foods, and it's by and far cheaper than buying wet dog food from the store. I can also tailor the soup to my dog's tastes and needs.
If anyone's interested in some tips/tricks for making dog soup, feel free to message me.
