History/Background:
Shine looked around. What had happened? Just a second ago she had been with her herd while they were walking through a cannon. Her mother had been at her side. Then she heard screaming neighs of fear. "The moon has blocked the sun!" Screamed the leader over the rest. "Bunch up! We can't let the wolves get us!" The wolves could see better in the dark than the horses. Shine tried to follow her mother to the middle of the herd, where foals belonged, but got pushed to the outer circle. She was a mute, so she couldn't make a sound. Then the wolves came. They surrounded the herd... and separated Shine from the bunch! Shine tried, tried, tried to make a sound, but nothing came out. Then Shine's mother spotted her. "Shine! I'm coming!" Shine's mother forced her way out of the herd, then the wolves started barking. The heard stampeded away from Shine and her mother in their fear. Shine was alone with the wolves and her Mother. The wolves decided the grown mare would make a better meal than little Shine. They turned on Shine's mother, and she screamed for Shine to run. Shine tried to fight the wolves, but only succeeded in getting knocked away. She watched in horror as her mother went down. "Shine" she whispered. Then her eyes went blank. Shine ran. It seemed days she ran. Then she stopped, exhausted. She threw her head back and screamed a silent scream and tears streamed from her eyes. She now wanders alone, with no mother and no herd.
