Kennel Number: 177
Name [of pet]: Kryptonite
Gender [of pet]: Female
Breed/Species [of pet]: Roan TN Walking Horse
Personality [of pet]: Protective. Kryptonite would happily give her life for someone she loves or something she believes in. She does not value her life as high as she values others', and will stand even when she knows that her chances of surviving are slim.
Inferior. Kryptonite believes herself to be less valuable, as a result of her isolation and social problems. She does what she does in an attempt to make up for this lacking that she sees in herself.
Jaded. Kryptonite's past has left her mentally and emotionally crippled. Things that others take for granted, she finds herself unworthy. Things that others believe will make her happy, deeply upset her.
Loyal, to a fault. Kryptonite would rather die than break a promise or cross a friend. This, too, stands alongside her protective nature, as she would have to die before negative forces could pass her to reach those that she cares about.
Powerless. Kryptonite does not have any super strength, or any other power. She does not have control over anything, much less her own life - that is reserved for the ones that she cares the most about.
Background/History [of pet]:
[Song: 3 Doors Down, "Kryptonite"]
Well I took a walk around the world to ease my troubled mind
I left my body lying somewhere in the sands of time
But I watched the world float to the dark side of the moon
I feel there is nothing I can do, yeah
Kryptonite was born to one of the less desired mares of the herd. As she grew, she was kept away from the other foals, sheltered and raised to be a strong, spirited filly. She often play-fought with her mother after she was weaned, pulling only the attacks that would cause serious wounds until one or the other wore out. She was raised to be happy and independent - qualities that the rest of the herd did not appreciate.
When she was allowed to socialize with others her age, it was obvious that she stuck out. She was far stronger than any of the colts, and most certainly not at all like the model for a desirable mare. She was simply considered "one of the guys" by any and all... perhaps not the best position for her, and she knew it. The few friends she had never really cared for her; colts that she trusted often forced her into places and positions that she didn't want to be in, and the small group of fillies that accepted her often left her as the butt of every joke and prank known to equine kind, then abandoned her to get back on her own feet after her face was shoved into the mud (or worse), or her front legs got caught in thick, winding vines. Despite this, she continued to stay with the groups that took her in, showing her affection in the only way that she really knew - physical violence.
This, of course, ostracized her. She didn't know why they left, why they avoided her and found excuses to escape whenever she caught up with them. Eventually, though, she gave up, wandering away to a nearby herd during the darkest night of the month.
I watched the world float to the dark side of the moon
After all I knew it had to be something to do with you
I really don't mind what happens now and then
As long as you'll be my friend at the end
In the new herd, Kryptonite was again the outsider, but to a lesser extent. The colts and stallions again avoided her, and only a few mares permitted her to come close. One of these, a quiet silver mare named Moyo, soon befriended her, and the pair became inseparable, despite Kryptonite's terrible socialization skills. She began to truly care for Moyo, going so far as to correct her own bad behavior, using pain and mental anxiety to force these changes in herself. The strong, independent mare her mother had molded soon was lost, the remainder bent and twisted into something that suited Moyo the best. The violence that had once been her way at expressing affection was shoved away, replaced by... nothing. She had never learned how to show love without physically hurting anyone.
But, as long as Moyo was happy, so was Kryptonite.
And if I go crazy then will you still call me Superman?
If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand?
I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might
Kryptonite
Gradually, the changes Kryptonite forced upon herself caused mental damage. Her behavior became slightly erratic, though not so much as her inability to understand logic. Things that would not have bothered her at one time became crimes against her kind, and she often felt trapped or cornered by simple requests. Moyo became stressed because of this, which pulled Kryptonite even further apart. She was desperate to not lose Moyo, and so she forced more changes upon herself, hoping that she was still sane enough for her attempts to take hold. She became protective to a fault, trying to guard Moyo from any and all negative influences - though, Moyo herself didn't particularly care for it, and was able to use ties among the herd to escape Kryptonite when she was in an overbearing mood.
Kryptonite didn't understand this; she simply thought that she was being protective, in a good way, and was getting pushed away... again. She considered leaving the herd multiple times, and thought about offering herself to the various predators that followed the herd, but her love for Moyo always won out. She was stuck... unhappy... and, at the same time, the happiest she could ever remember being. She had found a seed of deep love within her, though she kept it quiet. This... this would be something that she would regret the most, even before she could gather the last shreds of her sanity.
You call me strong, you call me weak
But still your secrets I will keep
You took for granted all the times
I never let you down
Moyo, on occasion, confided in Kryptonite, though her raising paranoia kept her from thinking that she was being told the whole truth. However, despite this, she was open to being Moyo's confidant, ready and willing to help wherever her fellow mare needed it. She was always there; her schedule changed to match Moyo's, she did things she would never do for any other, and she lent her personal space - one of the few possessions a mare could have in the herd, besides Moyo's own feather charm granted to her by the birds.
Even when it came to regular choices, Kryptonite chose whatever would keep her the most open and helpful for Moyo. She was perfectly, insanely, lovingly loyal... but Moyo wanted more. She wanted space at the same time that she wanted someone to talk to, and love while she needed to be alone. Kryptonite didn't know how to do this; having been raised in a way that physical violence equaled affection, and then thrown this idea to the wayside, she didn't know how to express love, let alone over any sort of distance. She did her best, but it was never enough, and never the right kind of affection.
You stumbled in and bumped your head
If not for me then you'd be dead
I picked you up and put you back on solid ground
Then came the day that Moyo wanted to die.
Moyo, too, had a difficult past, and honest love - such as Kryptonite's - was a hard thing for her to accept. She suffered days of sadness, which Kryptonite tried so hard to ward off, and days where she could no longer find a reason to live - which, again, Kryptonite was there to try and prevent. However, that day, Moyo was serious... and it scared Kryptonite more than anything else in the world, that she would lose the mare that she had come to live for. In trying to reassure her, her old secret of deep love came out.
Moyo... Moyo didn't know how to react. She reconsidered, and let Kryptonite try to convince her, with all of the love and affection that she could offer. But... it just wasn't enough. It was never enough. By the time that Moyo confirmed that she could not return the affection, Kryptonite could no longer uproot that old seed she had hidden away; it had become something much, much stronger than she. And so more cracks started to form within her.
If I go crazy then will you still call me Superman?
If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might
Kryptonite
As the days wore on, Kryptonite's insanity began to show, turning her jealous and forcing her into thinking that she was inferior to all others - after all, she did not deserve love, in her mind. Moyo, of course, noticed this, and started pulling away, fearing the negative energy that had seemingly spawned from nowhere in the darker mare. Kryptonite's darker nature began to show more and more, the affectionate violence she had been raised with gradually mounting into more and more dangerous and painful methods. She was harder on herself, hating everything from her body to her mental state, which she knew was in shambles.
Moyo grew tired of this, though, and demanded that she pull herself together and act properly, despite the rejection of affection. And, as could be predicted, Kryptonite did... as best she could. Unfortunately, there was not much to put back together, by then.
If I go crazy then will you still call me Superman?
If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might
Kryptonite
Kryptonite's mask was that of a happy mare that had gone through a lot, and was better for it. It was a well-made mask; it fooled even herself for the longest time. However, beneath that mask was a festering pot of mental disorder after issue after disorder. Many things stewed inside of her, reminding her that she could never love again, that she had to make up for all of her failures, that she was inherently inferior to everyone else simply because she was so messed up. But she kept this hidden... until cracks in the mask started showing these emotions again. It was made even worse when, during the breeding season, Moyo was the one everyone - including the lead stallion - was after, leaving Kryptonite - well-known for her physical strength, still, and her protective nature - an unwanted shadow.
And everyone else wondered why Kryptonite wasn't happy.
If I go crazy then will you still call me Superman?
If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might
