Name: Willow
Species: Fallow Deer (doe)
Personality: A very sweet, very shy doe. Willow hates confrontation, and will flee at the slightest hint of danger. Despite this, she is a devoted mother, and a strong figure in the herd, partly because she is the leader’s favourite. She exudes a certain peaceful quality that makes all around her feel calm and safe, and her presence in the Forest is a sure sign that the woods are safe. Like an impala at the watering hole, the other animals use her keen hearing and flinching reflexes to warn them of the slightest hint of danger. However, no one’s perfect. Due to her overly quiet nature, her fawns regularly play up around her, knowing she hasn’t the heart to scold them. Good thing Daddy isn’t so soft! Poor Willow also has absolutely no ability to defend herself or her fawns, leaving her vulnerable to attack. She just stands and shivers if there is no escape, so the stag of the herd has to rescue her. Again!
Likes: peace, quiet and tranquillity, the smell of newborn fawns and the gentle rustling whisper of the wind through the Forest.
Dislikes: loud, sudden noises, bright lights (don’t let her near a road at night time!), the open plains, since there’s no cover, and being taunted by the other does and animals for her overly skittish nature.
Background: Willow was born in Black Horse Forest. Her mother was a low ranking doe, her father was a bachelor stag who had mated with her mother without permission from the lead stag. As soon as he found out, the lead stag bore down upon the bachelor, roaring and lusting for blood. The bachelor was gored to death upon the leader’s antlers and hooves, and Willow’s mother was reduced to the bottom of the herd, feeding last and forced to travel at the very back of the herd, thus vulnerable to predators. As a result of this neglect, Willow was born very small, and to this day she is still one of the smallest does in the herd.
Willow’s markings are a sign of her herd, unusual but very common to Black Horse Forest. When she was older, almost an adult, a new stag entered the Forest. His hide was mottled like a fawn’s, but his size and antlers proved him to be full grown. He challenged the lead stag, a tyrant of a beast, and won the herd. The does were pleased he had freed them for their cruel master, and ‘fawned’ over him (excuse the pun ^^). But he only had eyes for Willow. Ever since, she has been his favourite, and, as such, has earnt the respect of her herd mates.
