After a bad day, I ran to the woods that surrounded my house and angrily pushed aside brush and vines as I moved deeper through the trees. Thorns tore my hands and branches clung to my clothes and as low as my mood was, it seemed like even the forest was against me. Frustrated to tears, I threw myself to the ground where I was and sobbed. Even loud as I was, nothing stirred. The trees stood as silent shields between me and the world, and their leaves kept the silence. Peace came to me gradually and I sat up to watch the small creek bubble by.

Leaves crunching caused me to lift my head as a bead lumbered past, it's arms swinging it's body into a rolling gait. Despite how close I was, it never glanced at me. What makes a bear run so fast? I asked myself. Ravens flew through the branches of the trees, their crude caws a warning to anything on the ground. Squirrels fled chattering through the highest reaches of the trees in bunches. The squirrels and the branches they raced through looked hazy. I squinted to focus on them, but they remained the same. A soft layer of smoke had settled around me, and changed the slightly familiar trees into indefinite bars holding me in the forest with the fire. A gasp caught in my throat as I froze in terror. A forest fire...

Coyotes raced past, alongside rabbits, their traditional meal. In the fear of the moment, neither noticed the others presence and focused all their energies on getting away. I could hear roar of the fire now; feel the heat it drove before it. Stumbling away from the fire in the now harsh forest I ran in both directions, but neither seemed right. Then she arrived, the saving grace She was as red as a flame, as lithe as a stream of water. The red deer paused in her flight to turn her head and look at me. She raised her tail, turned and ran a few steps. I understood, and knowing no other way followed her. We continued in this way to the edge of the forest. I knew without me she could have left the danger behind, escaped the grasping hands of smoke that stole into your lungs and made me cough. But she stayed. At the edge of the forest, the deer saw me safely to my yard. We looked at each other over the empty space and it seemed we both sighed. Me with longing, and she with satisfaction. Them my Flame went back to the forest, to save other creatures, or join the her fire I did not know. She saved my life.

Warning slight gore dont read if your faint of heart!
Light stripes adorned a coat of blood red fur. Long slender legs provided the ability for an easy get away. Dainty ears flicked one way and then another, always listening for signs of danger. There was no herd she belonged with, there never had been and never would be for she was no normal deer. Born of black magic which animated blood shed by a great war from times long since passed.

Unlike most deer the blood doe fed not on vegitation but on raw bloodied meat much like many of the worlds fearsome predators. The humans feared her, she was the perfect predator. With her beautiful unique coat everything thought her the picture of innocence until it was too late and the light of life had left their eyes.

She inhaled deeply enjoying the smells that assaulted her senses, there was blood on the air and lots of it. With a delighted buck she bounded off through the trees her hooves leaving faint scorch marks on the ground. Shades of green and brown flashed by as she bounded past leaving smaller plants withered in her path.

Finally she came across the source of heavy scent of blood, a male human lay on the ground which was slowly turning red with the ruby liquid. She danced on the spot excitedly and then sunk her teeth into the soft flesh of the throat, the blood there was best it flowed richly staining her mouth ruby red and turning her red coat a more sinister shade.

Congrats Rainbow on winning the buck :3
and Concept it's a gorgeous doe, Paper made a great decision in making you our artist.
Speaking of which, I might just try out for her she does have such a lovely coat.

There is a place, a sacred place where those lost souls convene. They are drawn here for reasons unknown, but what is known is that once they are here they never wish to leave...

I was trudging through the brush, the burs and vines grabbing at me like desperate hands seeking what little warmth I offered. This was a sacred and scared place. The forest was charred, blackened and singed; it was a mark in the land. A second figure followed me, bobbing through the eerie stillness of disaster with a coat that shone like the sky of a sun's dying rays. This used to be her forest. This was her place of freedom, her sanctuary of quiet golden light. It was here or the untouchable reaches of the wild mountains beyond these silent forests that she sought silence and solitude among the ancient trees standing like wizened soldiers, aged limbs gnarled with arthritis, veiled in the folds of glowing light and the whisper of wind, hidden away from the crash and scrape of stags locking antlers, and the desperate bleat of does. She was not like the other deer in these woods, and I knew that very well.

She was silent as a whisper as she let me scan the scene. This was a stifling heat, it seemed at that moment as if I might turn around and find myself face to face with the blistering source of a gaseous star, but the heat was not from the sun above, but from the charred and melted remains of the forest. Once proud and sturdy trees now the color of soot and covered with a fine dusting of soft ash. It might have been picturesque, the world so suddenly silent, save for the wiser of a starved summer breeze that whipped the ash upon the ground into miniature twisters, turning in a frenzy for a few moments of live before drifting back down into a barren strip of once lush grasses.

The doe now moved with a willowy stride to my side, her breath a welcome heat on the back of my neck. I wanted to say something, to make some statement that could express the emotion that boiled in my gut like molten anguish; but no such sound came and I was left with my mouth half-opened and gagging on a dry tongue dotted with flecks of soot. This seemed impossible, I was stock-still and ankle-deep in the remnants of a hundred-acre wood that had one held the blissful dreams of a young girl with fiery hair and a doe with fur the color of roses.

Those desperate souls, their hearts longing for a home, a sanctuary where their body may lie and their minds flitter in and out of a fantasy. They are drawn here for reasons unknown, but what is known is that once they are here they never wish to leave...

The movement was in the corner of my vision, a broken soldier his branches locked in an ever-skyward reach as if his calloused hands could one day touch the sky. His trunk was blackened and burned, and a small smoldering patch was running down his back. The others, the ones who had not known the light of the forest. The ones who did not hear the scuffles of life or breath the wild freedom of these golden woods as I had found it easy to burn these trees again, because in their eyes they were already departed souls, lost to the enormity of time. It was not the ancient oak though that had attracted my eyes, it was the embers of his trunk. They moved and twisted, shifting and blending as an artist would his paints before the canvas. Hues of red, orange and gold danced across the blackened wood, a stripe of pale sienna occasionally gracing the colorful dance, then it branched out. The embers moved away from their corpse, slowly solidifying, first a delicate cloven hoof stretching further out into a delicate leg.

I drew a silent gasp, my throat still too parched to form a coherent sound; much less words. Now before me and my doe stood a second doe, he coat the color of the burning embers from which she had come. She radiated heat, as if the fire within was still burning bright consuming her bones with a wild frenzy. "Keina" whispered, the little pink doe her voice sounded as if she were in awe, a mix of respect and fear. Keina as my deep pink doe had called her now turned to us, her eyes seemed to dance with the light of the day; her coat flickering in shades of russet marred only by pale strides that seemed to be ever changing as the light dapped her head and quarters. We were her divided attention.

"What does that mean?" I asked finally finding my brittle and cracked voice after a few moments. The doe now stood before me, her hooves having left fading imprints in the ash. She watched me curiously, her eyes roaming over me yet always returning to my mane of golden red curls that fell down my back over a rather sooty jacket. "Born of fire" my doe responded lightly. A cast a glance in her direction, and she was staring at me with a look of thinly veiled curiosity. "I was born from the embers of a dying fire, where I walk, walks the essence of fire. I am, was and forever will be the flame of the forest and the wiper of smoke between the trees. Just as much as Lilium here will be the one to inherit the most of the gift's power. A sly grin twisted her maw the the next words flowed from her ruby muzzle. "It definitely seems that you attract unusual company don't you?" I have to admit, Keina was right. I do attract unusual company in these woods and the ruby doe was no different.

But these desperate souls are the lucky ones, for who would ever want to leave the sanctuary of an ancient wood. Where sunlight dapples our flanks and the leaves brush past our antlers. They are drawn here for reasons unknown, but what is known is that once they are here they never wish to leave...

[For those that didn't catch it, Mona Lisa's real name is Lilium after the 'Mona Lisa Flower' that she was named for. All deer refer to her as such :3 Just thought you might want to know]

They say that there are very few deer out here with stripes. And when one's seen, it's like finding a unicorn.

They're not very smart, now, are they?

The doe flicked her ears, an amused glint dancing in her eye. Two birds were squabbling over... something - what it was, she couldn't tell - and one of the bystanders, a scruffy old jay, was carefully approaching, preparing to steal the disputed... whatever it was. This was a normal, daily occurrence in Saibhe's woods. That, and the Honoring of the Bucks were quite routine by the time that Saibhe had been able to stand on her own four hooves. Speaking of which -

A short bellow sounded somewhere behind the red doe, and the bucks of the herd gathered. Saibhe watched them gently clash their still-velvet-covered antlers together, then approach each of the females in turn. The does, as they were supposed to, bowed to the buck that voiced his claim over her, then allowed him to mark her in whatever way she pleased. Well, all except one.

The chauvinistic display had always disgusted Saibhe, and, as the bucks approached, she lowered her head and whispered a prayer for determination to the spirit of the heart. The male that had voiced his claim over her was a strong young buck... but where he was strong, he was also incredibly stupid.

"This doe is mine to claim. Do any wish to challenge me?"

"I do." Saibhe's voice, rarely heard by even those that knew her, was low and as velvety as the crowns those pigs wore on their heads. She threw her head up and reared, her furious hooves slashing the air dangerously.

The fight was a blur to Saibhe. A rush of energy and spirit ran though her, and by the time that it ended, she stood alone in a circle of defeated bucks, their heads lowered in bloodied submission. Some of the other, younger, does, had joined the revolt, much to the disapproval of the older ones that had given in to the domination.

"You will listen to me now. Listen! I am not some object or den to be claimed by a weak buck such as any of you. You believe yourselves so kingly because of some god's gift of antlers... we're goddess-created, too, just like you. You lose those crowns and become as bare-headed as the rest of us. If we don't want to be claimed, we have the right to reject you all."

Saibhe's head rose into the air, the fury in her red eyes turning them into pools of fire.

"I claim myself! And if any wish to dispute me, they will have to fight me for it!"

They say stripes are very rare in deer. But what's rarer, is a bold heart.

Perhaps that is for the best.
