I am looking to adopt...and keep forever in my heart Picture:
Kennel number: 102
Name: Leilani (Hawaiian for heavenly flower)
Nicknames- Leilee, Lani, Loolah, LanLan or Lan.
Summer knew the second she saw Leilani that she needed a special name, something unique that sounded beautiful, to match the canine herself.
Breed: Border Collie x German shepherd
The lab was trying to get the perfect cross to make a dog who could run all night with enthusiasm but had an edge of viciousness and strength, which is where the GSD breeding came in. They were disappointed when as a young pup Leilani didn’t show any signs of aggression and they couldn’t train it into her.
Mother and Father: unknown
Siblings: none as known.
Why do you want this animal and what will you do for it?: Her story came to me straight away, I didn’t even have to think about what to write about. She’s got such a pretty design and seems to radiate character and those eyes draw you in, they‘re what gave me my story idea actually. her colour scheme is fantastic and compliments itself really well, its interesting and unique, plus I love her little paw print mark. I adore naturally coloured designs anyway but its sometimes a challenge to find nice natural designs that are done well and are unique at the same time (without adding hundreds of accessories) in adoption centres. I don’t often find myself so captivated by designs but this girl just has me caught, I just hope I’m up to the task of writing for her.
If I win her I am hoping to continue her story, as an avid writer I spend a lot of my time looking for things to write and her story would be one that I can make grow and flourish while keeping it interesting. She’s a little ball of inspiration and when I look at her I get an idea for another chapter or plot twist, and its interesting to me to explore all this.
As always she’d be included in my writings about my other ‘pack’ members, which is getting to be quite a big story, but as the only character of mine that would have a human friend she would play an incredibly important role there. Which gives me even more ideas about where to take that story too.
I’m still working on my art and so she’d probably end up drawn quite a lot, and she’s got a nice design to practise so I would enjoy making art of her too. Its challenging enough to make me concentrate getting her markings to blend right as well as being a nice design to enjoy working on.
I’m also going to try my hand at dynamic scenes from my writings and I think she’ll provide me with plenty of brilliant opportunities to do this.
She will, of course, also have her own page on my character site and on any character threads I will have on chickensmoothie displaying her information and her art. and have art bought of her. Though as I am a little fussy about who I order art of my favourite characters from her art portfolio may take a while to build up. Though for a character as pretty as her its worth the wait for quality art.
Lastly I hope to use her in my attempt at the 100 themes challenge, there’s a few on the list that I think she would be perfect for.
Personality: The best friend you’ll ever have.
That’s probably the best way to describe her, fun loving always by your side and ready if you need a hug or some fur to dry your tears on. Lani has a very strong sense of friendship and tries her best to always be a good friend to everyone she meets, unless of course that person is trying to hurt her or her loved ones. Her best friend will always be Summer, but she knows that sometimes everyone needs a hug, and who better to deliver than a furry four pawed friend?
The unwavering loyalty you can count on.
Leilani is one of the most loyal canines you could ever meet, she’s by Summers side in seconds and would protect her even if it meant death for herself. She cannot bear to see anyone she cares about in pain or trouble and will go out of her way to stop it.
Though Summer is her number one priority she’ll be loyal and protective of anyone who deserves or needs it, friends family or even good hearted strangers she’ll look after, as long as it doesn’t hurt Summer or put anyone else at risk.
The rock in the storm.
One of Leilani’s strongest assets is her ability to remain calm and collected even in the most high stressed situations. She stands sounds and even and thinks her own actions through before she does anything, making her the perfect companion for someone as accident prone as Summer. Of course she can be excitable and nervous at times but she controls it well and very rarely seems stressed at all, the only time she appears worried is if Summer appears to be late or in trouble.
The fluffy ball of puppy playfulness.
Lani is still young, and full of energy. She has a certain childlike view to some aspects of life and knows that often the best thing to do is laugh and have fun. There’s always a time to play with this girl and she has a really bubbly excited side to her nature that makes her fun to be around.
The German shepherd in her breeding makes her the perfect guarding companion, she’s very protective of Summer and will protect her with her life. She’s got great hearing and is alert yet completely relaxed most of the time. She’s incredibly loyal and would happily lay down her life to protect her owner.
The collie in her is what giver her the happy playful always energetic side to her nature, she can run and play for hours and is such a happy dog to be around she cant help but make people smile. Everyone who meets her loves her and she’s a popular dog in Summer’s village.
Likes: Being beside my best friend
Leilani likes nothing better than just being with Summer and would happily spend all her time with the girl if she could, she loves just laying around with her or playing chase and swimming at the beach. Leilani adores Summer and follows her wherever she can, spending time together is just the perfect way to spend a day for this mixed breed canine.
Laying and watching the day drift away
The best time of day to relax with your best friend has to be as the sun goes down for Leilani, she loves to sit on the beach and watch the sun sink behind the waves, turning the sky all different pretty colours. It makes her feel peaceful and at one with the world and the quite time of day gives her time to think and re-charge.
Running, chasing, diving….after any toy!
What could be better than playing?! With her keen senses and intelligent playful nature Leilani -loves- to play, anything. Be it chase or find or learning tricks its all fun to her. Though her favourite game has to be chasing things in the sea. Splashing through the surf is just so much fun!
Dislikes: Being left by Summer.
It makes her incredibly anxious to be away from her best friend for too long when she doesn’t know where she is, she likes to know Summer is safe.
Thunder and lightening storms.
Oddly she loves and hates them in equal measure, but if you were to ask her she would always tell you she hates them and wishes they would never happen. In truth she is terrified of getting hit by lighting yet it fascinates her and she often ends up half hiding under Summers bed to peak out and watch it.
Being fed fish.
Though she isn’t overly fussy as far as food is concerned she really dislikes fish and its one of the few things she’ll turn down, which Summer finds hilarious. Leilani just doesn’t like the taste of it and much prefers white meat like chicken and turkey.
History/Background: Sometimes the sun doesn’t always shine as it should.
The winding lanes are not always the peaceful gentle old world quiet they appear to be. Despite the beautiful landscape and breathtaking ocean views the little town of Bo Cove, there is a world of twisted plots and tales you wouldn’t tell with the sun down. Dark people and dark little plots.
The rain lashed unrelentingly at the slick forest floor, a scattering of mouldering leaves and other plant debris mixed with freshly fallen foliage, the smell mingling with the rain and recently spilled blood to create an odd astringent odour that was unpleasant and strange to anyone who would happen upon it. Fat drops of liquid collected in holes and divots in the mud making shimmering puddles of dirty water. The noise seemed to be loud, a rushing roar of incredible frustration and need that refused to abate or silence but rather fed upon the misery below it and grew in power and strength. Yet the girl beneath the blowing leaves and swaying boughs didn’t not for one second realise any of this, her red stained head resting on the damp earth in a blissful restless ignorance, her dreams weaving colourful patterns behind her eyes, making her sigh and moan in her forced slumber.
The summer of my happiest days.
Summers grin was plastered to her face, excitement lighting up her odd violet eyes and making them shine and dance as she rode along next to her father. The car bumped over the rutted and dusty track, shaking its passengers as if it wanted to throw them from the car. Tapping her feet on the floor as the bumped along Summer sang to her favourite tune played softly from the radio, her soft voice rang out a melody that would sweeten even the toughest of hearts and a secret hope of the girls was that one day she could sing for more than just herself and her family, though she had no desire to be famous.
A curve appeared in the road and Summer felt her pulse quicken, a shiver ran down the girls spine and she looked at her father with a tight grin he laughed and turned the corner, slowing as they reached the big white house at the end of the road.
As she stepped from the car the wind lightly tossed Summers hair about her face, the blonde strands catching the light and turning her hair into a shinning curtain of dancing gold. The wind was warm though, and smelled of cut grass and hot baked earth, it was June and the hot weather was making everyone happy with the longer evenings and sunlit days. Stepping up to the house Summer knocked nervously, her father hovered behind her ready if she needed his help. A small greying man with an eye twitch and a tight smile answered the door with a frown.
‘Your Summer’ he stated stepping from the house and leading her to the back of the building without another word.
‘Yes that’s me’ she smiled following him and wondering what his problem was, he seemed nervous and kept glancing around nervously.
‘Right. Its in that shed. Take it and go’ he indicated a small wooden shed, brand new and still smelling faintly of staining fluid.
‘Thanks’ Summer started to say, but the odd man had already walked off and left her standing a little confused. Shrugging off her concerns and with her earlier excitement bubbling again she headed to the shed, her fingers found the bolt and slid it back easily, pulling open the door slowly she glanced inside.
A short bark greeted her, sounding not defensive or scared, but welcoming and happy to see her the sound full of warmth and tinged with curiosity, this was followed by the scuffling of small paws and the most beautiful canine Summer had ever seen skittered into view with a wagging tail and doggy grin.
With a gasp Summer lowered herself into a crouch, holding her hand out in front of her gently for the dog to sniff.
‘Hi girl, wow aren’t you the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen’ Summer smiled widley as the wiggling ball of fluff sniffed and licked enthusiastically at her hand, she giggled and ruffled the little canines head fur.
As she stood the canine sat at her side, gazing up at her with her head tilted to the side, tongue lolling out in a happy silly doggy smile, making Summer giggle as she watched the little dog. Happiness her main emotion she wondered across the gravelled yard with the bouncy dog at her feet and knew instantly that this was her dog, and always would be. The two of them had been meant to meet and she was looking forward to a long summer of playing with her new best friend.
Bending to pick the dog up she hopped up into the car and only as she sat down did she realise quite how big the canine was. Her butt sliding off of Summers knees the dog attempted to lick her new owners face with undiluted enthusiasm.
‘Were going to have so much fun’ Summer laughed ruffling the dogs scruff affectionately ‘now, for such a beautiful dog, you need a beautiful name’ she tilted her head as she gazed into the dogs mismatched eyes ‘I shall call you Leilani’ the dog wiggled excitedly and licked the girls chin in doggy approval.
The summer had so far been spent playing games on the beach, flaking out in the sun and having a good time together, girl and dog were growing together as a wonderful pair and spent every hour they could in each others company, the bond between them strong as only a dog and her best friend could be.
Two months later and the dog had was growing beautifully, her coat shone with health and her eyes were bright and playful. But something strange was happening to the dog, something Summer couldn’t find an explanation for.
Often Summer found Leilani outside, with all doors and windows shut and no doggy door installed it was puzzling how she managed this. She had asked her parents but they had no idea either, it was neither of them letting her out.
‘How are you doing this?’ she asked one evening opening the kitchen door to let her friend back in from the garden, Leilani just grinned her usual doggy smile and wagged her tail happily.
The dog padded through the kitchen and leaped up on to her favourite chair, a long squashy window seat that looked out over the beach behind their house, Summer followed her and sat behind the dog, running her fingers through the soft fur on Leilani’s shoulders and relaxing as they watched the sun drift down over the bay, the last of the days people packing away their things to leave the beach empty and peaceful. Lani made a soft humming sound in her throat and laid her head contentedly on the window sill.
The canine was getting quite big now for her age, though Summer wasn’t sure how old exactly the pup was, all the man on the phone had said was she was a few months ish, which didn’t give Summer much to go on though she suspected her companion was getting close to a year old.
They must have dozed off together sat there because when they woke it was dark outside, the stars shimmering brightly in the moonlit sky. Leilani was stood with her hackles raised glaring out the window and growling the most menacing noise Summer had ever heard. The garden looked still and quiet and Summer rested a hand on Leilani’s shoulder to calm her, worry building in the girls chest, she’d never seen her dog like this.
Suddenly Leilani jumped from the seat barking and snarling towards the back door, Summer let out a cry of fright as the door slammed open and two hulking black shadows forced their way inside. One of them shot Leilani with something, a fluffy red dart that hit the snarling dog in the chest and made her yelp, slowly Leilani‘s eyes became unfocused and she swayed unsteadily on her paws. Screaming Summer rushed to her dog arms outstretched as fear rushed and choked her throat, the dog fell to the floor with a long whine. One of the men advanced and grabbed the girl while the other picked up the slowly sleeping dog, her paws still twitching as she tried to cling on, to save her girl.
Where am I? What am I doing here?
:Leilani’s story.
My skin felt hot and tingly as I blinked my gritty eyes open and took in the room around me, a cold cement box held me captive and the floor beneath me was hard and uncomfortable. My mouth felt dry and I ached in every bone and joint, shaking my head and trembling slightly I raised myself to my paws, a whine escaping my throat as I did so. I let my head hang low as I shook my mussed fur out and a yawn escaped my maw, where on earth was I? More importantly where was Summer! Panic rose in my chest but I shook my head and quelled it, this was no time to let fear reign in my head I needed to be able to think. When I found out what was going on I could concentrate on Summer.
Turning to survey my surroundings I noticed a set of bars in front of me and moved my heavy paws to carry me closer to them. Beyond my own bars I could see other cages, a whole row of them stretching further than I could easily see. I huffed out a surprised snort and leaped back as a voice shushed me from next to me. I pinned my ears back and looked towards the cement wall with a mix of curiosity and a slight twitch of fear.
‘Hello?’ I asked making my voice sound calm and confident, wondering who the mystery voice belonged too.
‘New here I gather’ a dry voice answered me, tinged with amusement ’can always spot a newbie’
‘Yes I am new, in fact I’ve just woken up here, could you tell me where I am?’ I sat and curled my tail round my paws in the manner of a cat, a habit I have had since puppy hood, though I don’t remember much of my young life.
‘Well, your in a research facility. You know, the two legged beings do tests on us and stuff’
‘Oh. Why do they want me then?’
‘You must be joking?’ the gruff voice sounded disbelieving ’the tests? Hello?’
‘Ah yes, sorry’ I dipped my head slightly feeling embarrassed ’well. Is there any way out?’
‘If there was don’t you think we’d all have left by now. Now go to sleep and be quiet’
I raised an eyebrow, he clearly hadn’t wanted to help me so i was just going to have to get out myself. At home it was easy to get out, all I ever had to do was stand at the backdoor and I was outside, so it should be the same here. I couldn’t figure out why the others hadn’t already thought of this but it wasn’t my place to tell them.
I stood at the bars and concentrated, all I had to do was want to get out and I would be out. Easy.
Or not, I wrinkled my brow and concentrated harder, this should be easy. Confused that I wasn’t already on the outside of my cage I huffed in frustration.
Deep breath and try again.
Still not working. Why wasn’t I outside? I didn’t have much time to think about that as minuets later a man in a long white coat came to get me, pressing a button outside my cage he came in. He didn’t try to pet me or even really look at me even though I wagged my tail and greeted him the same as I greeted all humans. He slipped a chain round my neck and led me roughly from the cage, annoyed I felt like pulling back and stopping, I sensed this would not end well for me though and so I kept moving alongside him, head low and eyes on the ground.
We left the room behind and walked down what seemed like a never ending corridor until we reached a set of shinny doors, he pushed through them and I found myself in a plain white room, nothing in there but me and the human. The man let me off the lead and set me loose into the room before turning and leaving, I sniffed around the room but there were no specific smells. This room was at least warmer than the last.
Voices came drifting in from the hall and I cocked an ear to listen to them, my natural curiosity drawing me to listen.
‘Where did they take the girl?’
‘She’s in the woodland hide out, she wont escape’
‘That’s good then, we cant have anyone knowing about this, people will think she ran away and the dog went with her’
‘The searches?’
‘Not important. Once we get past a certain time frame the police will no longer look for her, we are well hidden enough to avoid that’
‘And the dog? What are we going to do with it?’
‘Well, from what I hear its powers were not yet defined as a pup. It should never have left the compound when it was younger’
‘Powers?’
‘The odd eyes, the yellow one is the one that holds the gift. As it grows it will grow with it, the power to teleport itself from one place to another’
‘Does the boss know we have it back?’
‘No. He called it all off, that’s why it was given away, he decided it was wrong to medal like that and switched his interests to colour and marking modification. It was to be given away as a normal dog to live a normal life’
‘So why is it back?’
The voices faded slowly and I was left slack jawed and quickly processing the information, these people had provided me with. I was…a genetic freak? Modified in some lab for…for what purpose?
Questions popped into my head like floating bubbles, but for now I would have to wait to think about them. Summer needed me and I had to find her. I pinned my ears back and walked at the door with determination, having no idea how my…powers, worked it was a case of hoping I could manage to escape now, it hadn’t worked in the cage but it worked at home.
I walked square and strong at the door, closing my eyes and breathing steadily I just relaxed and thought of being on the other side of the door, until I walked into a wall.
I blinked and skidded to a halt, I was outside the room! A quick grin was all I allowed myself before turning and running down the hall and top speed, possessing the skill to read basic human writing I managed to navigate my way to the entrance of the building, using the same theory as I had before I ran at the door and pictured myself the other side.
It worked again and my paws flew across the grass outside as I sped towards the trees at the end of a long sloping lawn. A loud flat bang rang out behind me and I instinctively tucked my head down and tensed myself, beside me a large clump of mud and grass flew from the ground and into the air, breath caught in my throat as I realised what was happening, I’d watched enough old westerns with Summers father to know that this was the sound and effect of gunshot.
The sound carried flat and deadly across the grass to me three more times and I ran in a weave as I carried on to the trees, nothing it me and my breath came in ragged gasps as I hoped it would stay that way.
An idea flashing to mind I concentrated on willing myself into the trees hoping desperately that I could make it away faster. No luck, though I found myself slightly further along the lawn I wasn’t much nearer to the safe closure of the trees than I had been before.
So that must be the limitation I had heard about, I couldn’t go much further than a meter or so which made the sound of engines starting behind me slightly more worrisome. I poured as much speed on as I could but I knew that if I didn’t get there before them the game was up and they would catch me, but now the trunks of the leafy green foliage was in sight and hope flared through me. I ran with all my heart and skidded into the forest just as I felt the shadow of a vehicle fall over me and turn the grass at my paws dark.
I didn’t stop as I hit the dense forest but leapt and twisted my way through bushes and branches until I could no longer hear the engines. I wasn’t foolish enough to think it had ended there and the humans would just give up, but I did know that now it would be easier to keep hidden, my paws and sharp senses gave me the advantage over them out here.
Hurtling through a small clearing a few minuets later as my breath burned in my lungs I heard a short bark behind me and I jumped sideways in surprise, I had not expected to see anyone out here. I slowed my pace wondering who it could possibly be as an odd coloured wolf with a shock of blue hair paced from the trees.
‘Who are you?’ I asked standing square to face the newcomer, hoping they didn’t mean me any harm and would let me go.
‘Razor, did you just come from there?’ the female asked in a quick urgent voice, indicating behind us to where I had just run from. Her white fur was covered in black stripes and she had grey patches on her paws and tail, she was the strangest thing I had ever seen.
‘Yes, do you know of it?’
‘you better follow me’ she said starting at a quick run and leading me deeper into the forest ‘I come from there, we need to get away from here fast’
‘Alright’ I took off after her, having caught my breath slightly from the brief pause I ran alongside her so I could speak to her ‘they have my human hidden in he forest somewhere, I need to find her’
‘Your human? You have a human?’ the wolf gave me a sidelong glance that was filled with an odd mix of surprise and wariness that momentarily had me wondering what had happened to her at the hands of these men.
‘Yes, Summer. She’s my best friend and she needs me’ sadness rose in my throat and for a moment I felt choked, shaking my head to clear my thoughts I continued ‘they captured both me and her and I’m scared they might hurt her. I have to find her’
‘We’ll help you’
Mum? Dad? Leilani?! I’m so scared.
:Summer’s point of view.
The girl moaned as her eyes twitched open, the wooden room around her was bare and dirty and she was propped in a corner left to rest against the floor. As she tried to move restraints dug into her wrists and feet and she cried out as the rope bit her skin. A black figure paced into her field of view and glared at her angrily, clearly annoyed that she’d made any noise. Summer fought a sob that rose in her throat and bit her lip harshly to stop any more noise escaping.
The man curled a lip and turned to his cell phone as it chirped into life, he flipped it open and held it to his ear wrinkling his nose as he did so. The phone was set loud enough that Summer unfortunately could hear everything.
‘Hello’ the man said gruffly looking displeased and suddenly on edge.
‘There’s been a problem, we have to stop the operation’
‘What! But it’s already underway. What happened?’
‘The mutt escaped, the idiots out from tried to shoot at her thinking she was some wild rabid animal that had got onto the compound. The boss saw the whole thing and recognised her. I escaped but he’s had everyone else who was involved arrested and taken away’
‘What! How did he know?’
‘Someone was keeping a file on the operation, we’re all named in it’
The man swore under his breath before speaking again ‘so what now?’
‘Get rid of the girl, make sure it looks like an accident. I’m going after the mutt to see if I can kill it but we need to be out of here by nightfall’
‘The darkness will help us escape’ the man agreed nodding now and looking at Summer in a way that made her stomach shrink and her spine go cold ‘I’ll take care of it. Good luck finding the dog’
He ended the call and opened the front door, leaving her alone for a moment for what reason she could only guess at, and it made her even more frightened.
Her mind working over time she struggled with her bonds trying desperately to loosen them so she could get free and run from this dreadful place. As she struggled her wrist caught on a loose nail in the wall and snagged her skin, she stifled a yelp as she realised she was cut and the nail might be sharp enough to cut the rope if it could cut her skin. Rasping the coils against the sharp point of the nail she caught her skin more than once but she didn’t give up, eventually she felt the tight rope loosen and knew she was nearly there. A couple more times back and forth and the coils fell loose behind her. Hope surged through her and she quickly untied her feet, scrabbling up and hurtling herself at the door. Her eyes flicked back and forth from the door to the trees around it, deciding her best bet was just to run straight she stretched out her tight muscles, sore from sitting still so long, and ran as quickly as she could, bursting from the small cabin just as the man reappeared from the side. He shouted a curse at her and she yelped in fright, pouring on the speed and hurtling for the trees. Her breath came in short ragged gasps and fear held her chest in a vice as she dodged trees and jumped over small bushes, the rough sound of footsteps behind her warning her the man was following.
The fatal mistake was looking back to see how far behind he was, her foot snagged in a tree root and her wide violet eyes flashed with terror as she went hurtling to the ground, as she fell her head smashed against something solid and with a crack that blinded her and sent white hot light through her skull she crashed to the ground and lay dazed. The man stopped over her to see red seeping from beneath her head, panic seized his chest and he made the snap decision she was more or less done for anyway, her eyes were closed and her mouth hung slack, he backed away and fled the scene, his only thought was how much plane tickets to Mexico cost.
I will find you, my companion, my friend, my heart.
:Leilani’s point of view.
In the hours we had spent running Razor had filled me in on most of her story and I had a much better understanding on the awful place I had just left, speed was of the essence as Razor feared the humans were intending to harm Summer.
We had only made one stop, to Razors home with a pack of abandoned and rescued dogs and wolves, she had warned the others of what was happening and they were alert and ready to stop any humans they saw who wore the uniform of the lab or carried guns.
The forest had become a blur in the time we ran and my legs were weak with exhaustion but the thought of Summer kept me running strongly at Razors side, who hadn’t even started to look tired and seemed to relish the long run. Her face however was grim which made my heart go cold. It had started to drizzle a while ago and the light rain soaked through our fur, wind whipped at us and the clouds swirled black and menacing overhead.
Eventually we came across the small wooden building Razor had said we would and I felt my pace quicken, keen to get to my Summer and comfort her.
We scaled the place, it seemed quiet and as we approached the door we found out why it seemed so peaceful, it was empty. The open door blew in the wind and the room beyond it was silent and empty except for a coil of rope on the floor by one wall. My throat tightened and I felt Razor bump her shoulder against mine.
‘You know her scent. Don’t worry yet, sniff around and see if you can small her’ the wolf looked at me with soft eyes ‘we’ll find her’
I nodded and straightened, it would do no good at this point to go jumping to conclusions, my girl needed me to find her and I could. I put my nose to the floor and sniffed, wondering in loose circles until finally I found a very faint small of her, barking to alert Razor I took off following the scent, the rain growing heavy was quickly washing it away as I leaped through the thick bushes.
Landing over one hedge I smelled the faint odour of blood and caught a glimpse of tangled blonde hair, the only bright thing amongst the dirt where she lay, breath caught in my throat I ran to her side and lay beside her, wiggling to get closer to her as I licked at her chin. A soft moan escaped her and her eyes flicked open, focusing on my face before she threw her arms around me letting out a soft cry of pain but making her hug as tight as she could. Joy filled my heart and I licked her chin and face ecstatically as my tail wagged like crazy behind me. Summer sobbed into my neck as her fingers tangled in the fur over my back, I laid my head against her shoulder and hummed softly in my chest to her, letting her cry against me while knowing we had to get her away from here as soon as we could. Our moment of reunion was ruined when Razor let out a sharp growl, my head snapped towards her to see a shadow lurking in the trees, without thinking I launched myself away from Summer and towards the lurking shadow, drawing closer I saw the mean eyes of the man who had held me earlier and I threw myself at him with a loud snarl, how dare he put my girl in danger. My weight threw him back as I bit down on his shoulder and he cried out as we hit the floor, Razor was on him in a second and between is we had him pinned. It was then the blue flashing lights lit up the whole forest and the sound of sirens wailed around us.
‘Police’ I sighed happily as I watched Summer rise to her feet and run towards to figures who had appeared in the trees, her parents t seemed to be and I couldn’t help an excited bark. Shouts sounded out and officers came towards us, we backed off and they took away the struggling man. I turned to thank Razor but her face had fallen into a flat black snarl as she started past me to the humans.
‘I have to go’ she snapped roughly her eyes flicking to me ‘come and visit, maybe its about time we had humans around again, if your Summer is as wonderful as you say’
I nodded as she turned to shoot into the trees ‘thanks!’ I yelped after her wondering why she was so keen to get away. Shaking my head in wonder I turned and bounded over to Summer, where I was meant to be.
Curled up on the long squishy cushion with my head on Summer’s lap watching the sun go down over the bay behind her house I felt more contented and happy than I had in my life. The police had commended me and I now wore a collar from which proudly hung a silver paw print, the doggy version of a medal of bravery for saving Summer and bringing down, what had turned out to be, one of the most notorious thief’s in the country. It turned out the police had been sent by the owner of the lab, what was happening there no one knew, but he had told Summer that I belonged to her and no one else, and given her a number to call if anyone tried to hurt me again. He also explained that I was very special and had been modified to be able to teleport and it would grow stronger as I did, he didn’t know what else might happen but it didn’t worry us. The last thing we were given was a large farm house, on the same stretch of coast as we had lived before, but this one was an old farm, huge barns were scattered around and the house sat on our own private bay. Summer’s dad suspected this was a pay off to keep quiet about me and all that had happened but it was all done legally and out old house was sold in exchange. I could stay with Summer for ever now, days ahead filled with playing and fun, I would protect her forever now. These were going to be the happiest days of our lives and as I looked up into Summers relaxed happy face I wagged my tail and felt absolutely, that this was my place in the world, and nothing could take me from it.
After all, what is there better in the world than being snuggled up with your very best friend in the entire universe?
