It's still quite biting and unpleasant for Kofoid to stick her nose under the gentle stream of water in the mornings, but she shivers less when she feels more neutral winds rake over the wet fur on her face. The water seems to run quicker, leaping further and more intensely over the rocks and roots in its path. It teems with energy and life, most noticeably when she spies undulating eels exploring the shallow water from her vantage point in the trees.
She's being told she needs to grow up, now. Misty is nudging her in a more mature direction, or anyway, she's trying to, and Kofoid is nervous and skittish. She's avoidant, escaping from their makeshift camps early in the mornings and making her own entertainment in the tangled, dense bush they occupy this time of year. It's her first cycle around the wilderness with the Fuller-Haast, and she finds much novelty in the newfound vistas devoid of twoleg life or debris. Just huge, rolling hills blanketed with the foliage of the tightly-packed trees.
Horse, for now, is patient with her running away all the time to loiter in spoken-for but deserted wildcat territory, annoying birds and surveying the movement of eels. He thinks, perhaps naively, that Mister Kofoid will come to her senses and see the value in following Horse and Monday around and copying their every move until her muscle memory is robust and she can contribute properly. He thinks she will come to view the Fuller-Haast as not some passing allegiance, and will apply herself to the group's survival.
She is young, and simple, and the world around her is beginning to stir and buzz. Her last spring was spent among the dregs, having not even met her patron saint Misty yet, and her fragile mind has still not recovered from that hostile environment. It's the first time in her life she doesn't have to worry about her own survival and she revels in it-- takes advantage of it completely to lounge about someplace beautiful and soak up the burgeoning sun, growing warmer every day; heating her fur further every day. She's too preoccupied with the spring's gentle warmth to imagine how hot the summer might be.
Horse wakes up every day now, and sniffs the air. It's become his new paranoid morning ritual, stretching to life as soon as he opens his eyes, stalking around his sleeping groupmates' limbs and intently tasting the air. His jaw drops low, teeth bared, eyes wide. He smells something. It makes his fur raise uncomfortably.
Misty is the only other 'adult' he can fraternize with. He finds a spare moment to sidle up next to her as she's tonguing her paws or chewing dirt out from under her claws.
"Have you been smelling that?"
Her eyes remain on the task at hand as she pauses her work to speak. "I smell a lot of things, Horse. They blend together sometimes." Her eyes dart to the ground momentarily, a pang of shame at her recent absent-mindedness hitting her unpleasantly. She doesn't like the way her mind has slowed as of late. Away from the dregs once more, her guard is down, and now she finds herself aimless. Kofoid's comfortable, what does she do now?
Horse huffs in intellectual effort as he projects the strange, unfamiliar scent in his mind for the umpteenth time. "It's a new smell. I know what strays and twolegs smell like, and it's not that. I know what dregs smell like. It's something else, I'm sure of it. Something else is lurking around."
Misty's incessant gnawing ceases. She thinks for a moment. "Wildcats, you think?"
"I don't know. I don't know what wildcats smell like."
She hums. She wonders if he even really knows what dregs smell like enough to rule their presence out. Horse doesn't speak as they both consider.
"We need to eat, anyhow." Her head dips. "Kofoid needs to learn to feed herself, too."
Horse nods, tail flicking back and forth thoughtfully. "We'll see, then. Check it out some." Misty purrs quietly in acknowledgement.

A territory with no border, as long as the residents know their way back home. The Forsaken Refuge is located in the heart of West Yellowstone, surrounded by meadows, coniferous forests, small rivers, and rocky hills. The area is also home to several prey and predators commonly found in Yellowstone, which the refuge’s cats have to keep their attention up diligently lest danger approaches. Some current residents and passing travelers had seen many abandoned twoleg places scattered throughout the area, just like the refuge’s shed. No one knows why twolegs left this area, and nobody bothers to find out either.
North
A large, abandoned twoleg place lies in ruin (motel). It is built with rocky structures and wood, now rotting as support, with broken glass scattered near window openings. It has already been taken by the earth, tangled with lush vines and other wild plants. The outside is a barren meadow, while the inside is forgotten, with only slivers of rays breaching through the holes of the ruin. Some cats have visited the place to test their wits during the night, but warnings have also been given, as other animals may visit the same place at the same time. Several old, broken, rusty twoleg items are still scattered inside the ruin. Rare herbs can also be found growing at the edges of the ruin.
South
A tree-length sloping waterfall facing south. It’s significantly sloped, with smooth boulders and rocks, making it easy to visit and navigate. It offers a breathtaking view from below the rushing water, with no wastes from the twolegs to soil the earth. As such, this place is considered sacred to locals, and many would avoid conflict near the waterfall. If it were not for how dangerous the waterfall can be during high tide, of course. During low tide, cats and animals alike enjoy sliding down a safe slope, especially for youngsters trying out for the first time. This sloping waterfall has been deemed a second “clearing” for the refugees to share tongues outside the shed. It may get slippery during leafbare, and cats may get injured if they are not careful.
East
Hills of coniferous forest. Some parts of the contours are so steep that they require great grip and stamina to travel through, or they can take a longer route around to get up the hill. Wolves frequently patrol this area, either to mark their territory, hunt, or find a nest. Underground nests can be found scarcely from the forest to the open meadow. Cats need to be careful during winter, as food competition is high. Both plentiful prey and herbs, patrols most frequently send to the east to gather resources, but the numbers shouldn’t go below 3 per patrol in case of emergencies.
West
A wide stream of river going downhill to the south. It is deep enough for fish to thrive, shallow enough for cats to swim safely. Wildlife often visits for a sip, making this territory both rich in prey and dangerous from predators. Water rises to its maximum height during leaffall. Fish are plentiful, but the rushing water is deemed dangerous during this time. The surface water freezes during leafbare, requiring cats to break a hole each time they want access to water. It’s also home to various herbs that grow in damp areas.
