Prompt: #3 - Hypothetical kittens (317 words)
Housecat kittens are always nice and warm. Soft beds, soft mamas, humans to tend their every need and teach them how to be a perfect housecat. It's safe in here; no predators, disease eradicated, and an abundance of food. Who would want to leave this place? Who would dare? Housecat kittens can and will stay inside; there's nothing for them out there.
So why does this one dream of outside? Why do train headlights illuminate her nightmares, forcing her to run through the forest? When she pounces, it's not on pretty pink feather toys or catnip rollers. It's on birds with violent starlight in their eyes, on things that wail with wild secrets that demand to be revealed.
Housecat kittens grow up and - oh. Even though they'd never want to leave, the humans want to separate them. See, there's new humans here now. These ones have strange voices, different clothes, different scents. They want to take the kittens away from each other. Mama says its fine, says they'll be happy in their new homes. Why, she's glad for a moment of peace and quiet!
So Mama doesn't want them and the humans want to take them away. What are housecat kittens to do but finally listen to the dreamer with stars in her eyes? She knows how to hunt, barely, how to survive, enough, but most importantly how to follow the stars to find the answers she seeks.
Tip toe, tip toe, sneak out the open window. Give Mama one last goodbye - she thinks its because of the humans, but what does she know? There's a great and scary world out there, waiting to pounce on housecat kittens. Not to worry - they'll have each other to lean on. Maybe they'll find a mentor, maybe they'll learn by hard knocks. They won't stop, though, not until the dreamer follows the train tracks and finds the answers she seeks.[/quote]
