Caleb leaned against the doorframe for a moment, taking in the scene with an easy smirk. The warmth in the room was familiar, the kind of comfort that only came with being home. Isla was already passing out souvenirs, the twins clinging to her like they hadnโt seen her in years, even though it had only been a few months.
Celia and Cybil looked between the stuffed animals Isla offered them with deep, dramatic consideration, as if the choice held the weight of the world. Cybil, the more decisive of the two, reached for the green turtle without hesitation.
โI like this one,โ she announced proudly, hugging it to her chest. โIt looks like the one from the pond!โ
Celia pouted for a moment, clearly torn, before picking up the starfish and holding it out toward her twin. โWanna trade?โ
โNope.โ Cybil grinned, already spinning in place with her new toy.
Celia sighed, but after a moment, she brightened up. โOkay, I like this one better anyway.โ She squeezed the plush starfish before turning her attention back to Amelia, eyes narrowing playfully.
Caleb watched the exchange with quiet amusement as he scooped some eggs onto his plate. It was always funny to him how the twins could turn the simplest things into a full debate. When Celia finally redirected her attention to Amelia, Caleb wasnโt surprised in the slightest.
His eyes flicked to Amelia as she spoke to the twins, and he took a second longer than necessary to look at herโlike he was trying to place her, or maybe just caught off guard. There was something about the way she held herself, the way her smile touched her eyes. He wasnโt sure what he expected when his aunt hired new help, but it hadnโt been this.
โSheโs got a point, Lia,โ he said as he finally stepped further inside, his voice a lazy drawl as he ruffled Celiaโs hair. โMs. Lydia wouldnโt hire a stranger.โ
Celia, still clutching her new stuffed starfish, squinted up at Amelia. โHmmmโฆ okay. But weโll be watching you,โ she declared, very seriously.
Caleb chuckled, shaking his head as he pulled the cotton shirt Isla had handed him from the bag. โThis is nice,โ he said, holding it up before giving his sister a knowing look. โYou get this because itโs practical, or because you thought Iโd look good in it?โ He teases.
โYou sticking around for lunch?โ he asks, his gaze lingering on Amelia as he leaned his hip against the counter. He couldnโt tell yet if she was the quiet, keep-to-herself type, or if she was just feeling out the family dynamic before she got too comfortable. Either way, he was curious.
