The worn leather of the seats in his beat of 1990 Ford Truck crinkled as the two slid in. He drove, but Naiah always picked the music. It was just a comfortable rhythm they always seemed to find themselves in. The ac didnโ€™t work, hadnโ€™t for years, but the stale heat in the cabbie had him rolling the windows down as they bumped down the old gravel roads. He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, enjoying Naiahโ€™s company as she fidgeted with the radio. The narrow, unpaved dirt road from their farmhomes lead directly out to the Lucky Gates, the three mile drive sending dirt flying in clouds. From there lead to their current location of old gravel roads with craters so big you had to drive very carefully. Itโ€™d be about a mile out from the market before theyโ€™d find anything paved, but he wouldnโ€™t have it any other way.

โ€œWant to grab a bite to eat at The Melting Pot when weโ€™re done?โ€ He softly inquired, eyes set on the road ahead. Itโ€™d been a long day, longer still if they were able to fix any of the fences as the day began to end. But for now the afternoon sun beat down above. It was another twentyish minutes or so before Jem was pulling to the markets lot. A handful of vehicles scattered about and the loud laughter of townsfolk could be heard. Parking, he heard a concerning pop from the engine.

โ€œThat canโ€™t be good. Iโ€™ll meet ya inside?โ€ Jem shook his head, adjusting his hat as his boots hit the pavement. Popping the hood his bright blue eyes narrowed, he wasnโ€™t much of a car guy but he knew enough to get by. โ€œHmm..โ€ He mumbled to himself.

Isla Luck
28 | Female | The Wanderer
Location: Main House
Tagged: Amelia, Caleb
While the other three spoke about the siblings and Lydia's late husband, Damien, Isla started eating some breakfast, taking just a bit, knowing she could refill her plate afterwards if she wanted more. There was no surprise to the wistful tone her grandmother took as she spoke, and she good-naturedly thought about the can of worms that Amelia had opened by asking about just one of the siblings. She was a little surprised that there hadn't been more spoken about, but regardless, Isla lightly blushed as Erica had also complimented her and she took the reached out hand from the older woman. "Ericaaaa," Isla said, lightly, in a tone similar to that of someone being embarrassed by a parent, but in a way that she didn't really mind it. She did feel a little guilt as she was told they were so happy she was home. For a moment, the ranch really did feel more like home again. "I'm glad to be back."

She glanced towards Amelia as she asked where she was planning on going next. Isla shrugged. "I'm not sure yet. Maybe Netherlands, I went a few years ago, I'd love to go back. Or maybe Scotland, there's loads of tiny island off the coast there that would be interesting to explore." Her travel plans varied from being planned months in advance to planning them just a week before going, and it wasn't often she'd tell anyone when she was leaving until a few days before. As it stood, her next future adventure would be to Japan, but that wasn't for another four months - so plenty of time to plan something on short notice.

As she mused over this, she was brought out of her thoughts as Caleb entered the kitchen with the twins, Celia and Cybil. "Ah - speaking of Caleb." Isla said, and she quickly finished her food, wiping her hands on a napkin, before pulling her bag towards her to go through it again. For her brother, she took out a sun-printed, cotton shirt. "It's made by the locals, and perfect for the particularly hot days," she explained, "and for my favourite nieces..." Isla went back into her bag, taking out soft stuffies of a green turtle and a starfish. "I saw lots of these while snorkelling." She explained, and offered them to the twins, to let them take the one they wanted each.

Ames bit the inside of her cheek as she focused on the potatoes for a moment. Islaโ€™s traveling sounded wonderful, so for just a moment, she let her own thoughts wonder to what all these places could even be like. A soft smile playing on her lips as her bright eyes dazzled with wonder. Just as she was about to reply, the door swung open. โ€œAh, speaking of Caleb.โ€ Isla says behind her. Looking over her left shoulder curiously, Ames felt the air rush out of her lungs.

In that moment she understood what was said about the Luck family all being good looking, though she first noticed his tan and the lovely blue of his eyes. She could feel the beginnings of a blush from the blooming heat in her cheeks. Then she noticed the adorable little kids that came in with him, whom were currently demanding gifts from Isla.

โ€˜Oh, heโ€™s married.โ€™ Amelia thought to herself, giggling softly as she watched the two interact with their aunt. She shyly glanced back at Caleb who still stood in the doorway. She missed one of the twins approaching her until she felt the tugging from small hands on her clothes. Glancing down she was met with the biggest blue doe eyes and a toothy grin. โ€œWho are you miss??โ€ The little one asked, drawing the attention of their sibling whom quickly chimed in. โ€œYeah who are you, stranger danger!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m Amelia, and who are you?โ€ She spoke in a teasing tone, her free hand going to cover her heart and the other setting her knife down out of reach. โ€œMs. Lydia hired me, I canโ€™t be that much a stranger.โ€ She added with a light laugh, looking to the older woman in question. She was just leaned back in her chair watching as everyone interacted.

Erica who had stood to greet the twins and Caleb, began talking about lunch plans and that if anyone was hungry there was a small bit of breakfast still left.

Caleb leaned against the doorframe for a moment, taking in the scene with an easy smirk. The warmth in the room was familiar, the kind of comfort that only came with being home. Isla was already passing out souvenirs, the twins clinging to her like they hadnโ€™t seen her in years, even though it had only been a few months.

Celia and Cybil looked between the stuffed animals Isla offered them with deep, dramatic consideration, as if the choice held the weight of the world. Cybil, the more decisive of the two, reached for the green turtle without hesitation.

โ€œI like this one,โ€ she announced proudly, hugging it to her chest. โ€œIt looks like the one from the pond!โ€

Celia pouted for a moment, clearly torn, before picking up the starfish and holding it out toward her twin. โ€œWanna trade?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€ Cybil grinned, already spinning in place with her new toy.

Celia sighed, but after a moment, she brightened up. โ€œOkay, I like this one better anyway.โ€ She squeezed the plush starfish before turning her attention back to Amelia, eyes narrowing playfully.

Caleb watched the exchange with quiet amusement as he scooped some eggs onto his plate. It was always funny to him how the twins could turn the simplest things into a full debate. When Celia finally redirected her attention to Amelia, Caleb wasnโ€™t surprised in the slightest.

His eyes flicked to Amelia as she spoke to the twins, and he took a second longer than necessary to look at herโ€”like he was trying to place her, or maybe just caught off guard. There was something about the way she held herself, the way her smile touched her eyes. He wasnโ€™t sure what he expected when his aunt hired new help, but it hadnโ€™t been this.

โ€œSheโ€™s got a point, Lia,โ€ he said as he finally stepped further inside, his voice a lazy drawl as he ruffled Celiaโ€™s hair. โ€œMs. Lydia wouldnโ€™t hire a stranger.โ€

Celia, still clutching her new stuffed starfish, squinted up at Amelia. โ€œHmmmโ€ฆ okay. But weโ€™ll be watching you,โ€ she declared, very seriously.

Caleb chuckled, shaking his head as he pulled the cotton shirt Isla had handed him from the bag. โ€œThis is nice,โ€ he said, holding it up before giving his sister a knowing look. โ€œYou get this because itโ€™s practical, or because you thought Iโ€™d look good in it?โ€ He teases.

โ€œYou sticking around for lunch?โ€ he asks, his gaze lingering on Amelia as he leaned his hip against the counter. He couldnโ€™t tell yet if she was the quiet, keep-to-herself type, or if she was just feeling out the family dynamic before she got too comfortable. Either way, he was curious.
