"They're growing up."
Princess's words fell onto the quiet evening air almost heavily. Hemlockstar couldn't even think of how he'd respond to the statement, let alone process them. Instead, the leader pushed himself against his mate's fur, letting the soft sounds of their kits playing wash over him.
It was true. Angel, Boots, and Hazel... they weren't kits anymore. They were almost warriors, full members of a clan that at first wanted nothing to do with them, though the kits didn't know that. Hemlockstar made sure of that. Instead, it was Hemlockstar that took the brunt of the clan's disgruntled comments. It was enough to almost ask Princess if he could live with her... almost. Yet, there were those in the clan that wanted to see Hemlockstar happy, knowing that these kits would help the clan, not harm it. When everything felt unbearable, Hemlockstar realized he had support.
While he reminisced, it was then that Princess blindsided him. She didn't even look at him, just stared straight ahead, at their grown kits. "I'm going to live with the clan full time." If she wasn't right next to him, Hemlockstar would have thought he dreamed that moment. As it was, he couldn't do anything but step back, turn and face Princess, and stare, unable to ask her if she really just said that.
"I'm serious," Princess said, laughing lightly at Hemlockstar's befuddlement. "I love you too much to be apart from you anymore. I'll still visit my Twolegs, of course, because I love them, too, but... the forest has been my home, as much as I thought it wasn't going to be. I want to experience the clan full time."
Emotions, every emotion possible, crossed Hemlockstar's mind. Nostalgia for when he first met Princess, sunbathing in her garden. A deep love for her, unwavering. Guilt, that she would leave her home for him. But above it all, elation - that he could spend every night with her, instead of being apart. "Are you sure?" Hemlockstar finally choked out, blinking, his mind buzzing.
Princess smiled, intertwining her tail with his. "I'm positive," she said firmly, brushing her cheek against his. "There is nothing I've been more sure of. Well, except that I love our kits," she laughed, watching Boots splash in a mud puddle, spraying both his sisters with dark mud as they indignantly started chasing him around, much to his delight. "I want... to grow our family, and be there for them at all times, and I feel like that can only happen when I finally accept that I'm meant to join TreeClan and be beside you."
Hemlockstar smiled back at Princess, his heart soaring. "I love you, you know," he said simply, butting his head against hers, looking down at the grass.
"And I love you too. Forever and always." Princess knew that she would do anything for Hemlockstar, and Hemlockstar had always felt the same.
