I have seen merle on greyhounds and looked it up. I was mostly thinking greyhound colors
Ah I see. From what I remember merle was mostly found in mixed lines (typically backyard bred), with brindle or high piebald being more common, but considering how popular merle is I wouldn't be surprised if its included more often nowadays. I certainly would suggest the inclusion of
Birdcatcher spots/
Snowflake at some point though! while it was only one line of greyhound that had them they are inheritable and confirmed not to be vitiligo nor ticking/roaning on white!

hypothetically if they were to be included were there any specific genes that caused said spots OvO

Unfortunately from what i can tell, no proper genetic research has been done for them to determine the locus. What has been confirmed however is it is not a form of vitiligo, and the fact it is found to vary in intensity and can be bred. In my opinion, it is probably a white modifier of some kind, as dogs already have white modifiers in their genepool anyway! And since white is very common for greyhounds to have. Similar markings have been found in horses! Honestly i wouldn't be surprised if it is the same gene (as dogs AND cats share the same white locus AND point/albinism locus after all!)! You can even find them on
non solid black greyhounds!

I didn't know birdcatcher was on dogs as well. Also I won't be the one to tell my friend she might not have a purebred greyhound. I don't think she would care as she loves her dog but she paid quite a bit for purebred papers. Though as she did it also to save the pup from the breeder I wouldn't be surprised if she would have paid twice what she did no matter. It is quite the cutie. I can't share pictures especially since I don't have any that don't show the wounds on the pup. When her wounds heal and she has the fur back from where they shaved so they could stitch her I will share if allowed. Knowing how my friend is probably not. She treats her dogs like her kids. Personal friends can see pictures but anyone else or just facebook in general that is a no go. Her teenage son who is about to graduate highschool still has to use an anime fan art image he drew as his image. [Too much info I know

ofc!! I truly didn't mean it as a criticism or to be harsh, just a gentle warning that typically merle is only bred in select breeds and is often bred by backyard breeders into other breeds for profit (Greyhound unfortunately being one of them). Its hard to vet a good breeder in general, but honestly good on your friend to try and treat the pup better than he was <3 I'm sure hes absolutely spoiled with love and care!
As for the birdcatcher spots- They have only been seen in greyhounds! Its such a unique thing that is so understudied.

I get you and I didn't see it as a bad thing. And that baby definitely loved. Funny thing is she named him Brutus after the great dane in The Ugly Dachshund movie [she blames her son I said I blamed the parent that introduced the movie and didn't expect there to be a dog named Brutus in their future XD
just looked up bird catcher spots on them it looks neat
