   Veri was simply grading papers that night, he didn’t expect a phone call that would have changed his life. His office at home was his safe place, the place he was most comfortable in besides his bedroom and bathroom. It was a wonderful summer night and for once it was cool enough to have his windows open thanks to the storms that had blown through earlier in the day. Crickets chirped in the bushes outside his windows while frogs sang in the trees. It was perfect music to lose himself in grading papers and exams. Glasses perched on the end of his nose as his eyes swam in oceans of lead-filled bubbles of exams from various class periods, his attention was solely devoted to grading the tests.
   That attention and focus was shattered in an instant when his cell phone began ringing. It made him jump, the ink from his fountain pen splattering across his student’s exam from his surprise. A curse left his lips as he gathered himself and quickly swiped to answer it. He hadn’t taken the time to look and see who it was, but he was almost sure that it was one of his students contacting him after university hours. A soft huff left him as he answered, jaw setting and ear not in use by his phone flattening against his head in annoyance.
   “Hello, you have reached Veri. If this is one of my students, you should know that it is after university hours and–” Annoyance laced his words until he was cut off by an all too familiar voice.
   “Wooooow, doctor, and here I thought I was special… Suppose I should just hang up and try again tomorrow.” A smile was heard in the voice, Veri’s face tinged with red as he stiffened. Curse the feeling of fluttering in his chest hearing that voice. His grip on the phone tightened as he jumped out of his office chair.
   “A-Aven, I didn’t expect you to call at such an hour. Is everything okay? Are you in any trouble or hurt?” The professor had forgotten about the final exams he was grading, instead turning his attention to the person on the phone, who laughed at his worry.
   “No no, I’m fine, I just thought I’d give you a call and see if I could take you somewhere tonight. It’s been a while since we last had an outing together, and the weather is perfect.”
   “Where do you want to take me? I’m in the middle of grading exams.”
   “Well, there’s this little place on the edge of the city that’s gorgeous this time of night. C’mon, Veri, it’ll be great! Plus I just know you’ve been cooped up in your office all night. Live a little.”
   There was a silence as Veri looked over his desk, the papers scattered across it, and the overall disarray it was in. Aven was right, he’d been here most of his night. He could use a break. His heart rate picked up as he moved from his place at his desk to his door. A heavy sigh left him as propped his phone up between his shoulder and his face, grabbing his coat off the rack and shrugging it on.
   “Fine, I’ll go with you. You know where to find me.”
   In no time at all, Veri had been picked up by Aven and he had made himself comfortable in the passenger seat of the blonde’s luxury car. Looking out the window, he watched as they left the city behind them. The car was silent as they drove up a winding cliffside road, headlights falling on the guardrails. That silence was broken as Aven spoke. Both hands on the wheel, his attention left the road for less than a second to look at Veri with a large grin plastered across his face. His gaze raked over the professor then moved back to the road in front of them.
   “We’re almost there. I almost didn’t expect you to say yes to me, if I’m honest. Normally you’re always so busy with work,” The car came to a slow stop, parking just off the road near an overlook. Aven left the car first and moved to Veri’s side, opening the door for him. A small bag was in his other hand, Veri’s eyebrows knitting together in confusion. “We’re here, just follow me.”
   Veri’s breath left him at the view as his ears perked up in surprise. The city was miles below them, lit up in the summer evening and surrounded in a beautiful glow of life and light. Aven seated himself at a nearby bench, patting the space next to him. Veri approached, seating himself as Aven opened the bag. A few snacks had been packed into the bag, notably mostly ones that Veri had mentioned he liked. There was that fluttering again. Aven had remembered all their little talks, hadn’t he…?
   “This is what I wanted you to see. The city looks so small from here, doesn’t it? Really puts things into perspective...” Aven’s voice was quiet, almost uncharacteristically for him. Veri nodded gently at his words as he reached into the bag for one of the snacks. “I found this place a long time ago and I come here often to think. I thought you’d like to see it, too.”
   The professor looked to the other, eyebrow raising in confusion. Just what was he up to this time…? Aven sighed softly and looked to Veri, shifting his whole body. The way he took Veri’s breath away. He looked absolutely gorgeous in the low light that the full moon cast over the overlook, the faintest hint of the glow of the city catching in his sunglasses, hair fluttering in the wind, the gentlest smile tugging at the corners of Aven’s lips as he spoke… He could barely hear what Aven had to say over the racing of his heart in his chest. There wasn’t any use in avoiding these feelings anymore. He’d fallen ears over tail for Aven. He couldn’t hide it anymore.
