What are scarrots? wrote:
Scarrots - short for "skitter carrots" (credit Deercan) - are living carrots who skitter around on their little legs at night frightening and confusing everyone in their path. They are small, nocturnal, burrowing creatures who generally live in small family units. They have excellent eyesight. They bite. Don't try to pick them up. We're not really sure what they eat tbh so just to be safe maybe don't get too close to a large group of them either.

Researchers are constantly looking for new information on these weird little critters and appreciate any observations you may have! Aka, feel free to post silly lore suggestions.

The mascot's name is Crunch. These lines are by riverotter.

Patches (a concept similar to tortoiseshell cats) has been released as a new gene!
When this dominant gene is present on a scarrot which is Oo, it activates both alleles to give the scarrot patches of orange and purple, or yellow and pink. It has no effect on oo or OO since both alleles are the same. It is overridden by unripe.

Scarrots πŸ₯• Rules

  • Plagiarism is bad and includes both the stealing / copying / not-proper-crediting of words and of ideas and tbh I'm really tired of it. Just because AI can do it doesn't mean you can (and AI shouldn't be either). This may be a silly space but please kindly don't steal/copy and have fun coming up with your own stuff instead! Thank you

    General Rules:
    1. All CS rules apply.
    2. Be nice! To everyone! <3
    Species Rules:
    1. Scarrots are a closed species! This means only official artists may make scarrots, and you may not use this linework or species concept to create your own without permission.
    2. You may never resell a scarrot for more than you paid for them (+ the price of any paid commission artwork).
      • Individual artists are allowed to prevent any resales of their designs by clearly posting on their scarrot threads their own TOS when the scarrot is initially posted.
    3. If you're changing ownership of a scarrot, please have both the old and new owners post on the Oekaki thread to confirm. There's no archive here rn and idk if I'll bother tbh.

    Owner:
      I Like Bees - hi it's me :) hello
    Artists:
    ---

    Artist Rules:
    1. Yeah they have genetics sorry about that. Please follow those genetics roughly but feel free to suggest things if you want to get crazier with their patterns! Don't stress too hard though because they are literally carrots.
    2. You can do whatever you want for competitions provided it's CS legal!
    3. You're welcome to make paid adopts! Anything CS legal works idc dw.
      • CS legal means no "pay to enter" raffles and if you'd like to sell a sentient carrot for irl money please discuss it offsite
    4. You can make yourself a custom scarrot for every 3 free-to-adopt scarrots you make.
    5. Judge your competitions within 30 days. That's a CS rule not mine.

Scarrots πŸ₯• Genetics

Postby I Like Bees » Sun Oct 13, 2024 5:55 pm

    How to genetics:
    • Allele = A single copy of a gene, represented by a letter. Every gene has two alleles (one from each parent).
    • Capital letter = Dominant allele (requires only one copy to show trait on the scarrot)
    • Lowercase letter = Recessive allele (requires two copies to show trait on the scarrot)
    • Phenotype = the visual appearance of the scarrot
    • Genotype = the genetics of the scarrot
    • If a scarrot was made before a gene was released (and does not have it in their listed genotype), assume that they do not carry/have it!

    Genetics:
      Color:
        O - orange
o - purple (can get as dark as near-black)

P - patches (only shows when a scarrot is Oo, in which case it activates both alleles so the scarrot has patches of orange and purple, or yellow and pink. These are the only possible color combinations. Patches is hidden by unripe)
p - no patches (displays just one color)

R - ripe (use the color from the O/o gene)
r - unripe (scarrot never develops the above pigment and remains "unripe" green forever. Lighter when dilute)

        D - dense (normal color)
        d - dilute (dilutes the scarrot's color)

        Orange dilutes into yellow/off-white.
        Purple dilutes into pink.
Orange vs. purple is always completely masked by green (unripe).
      Tabby:
        A - tabby
        a - solid

T - lined/striped tabby (full stripes across the scarrot; think mackerel tabby cat)
t - speckled/spotted tabby (small dots/spots/speckles across the whole scarrot instead of stripes)
^ These alleles are incompletely dominant - when a scarrot is Tt, they show an "intermediate" form where the stripes are broken apart but not spots. This is called "broken lined" or "broken striped" tabby.

W - tabby markings are darker than the base color
        w - white tabby markings
      Piebald:
S - white markings (large mostly connected patches, no stray flecks/similar)
        s - no white markings
^ These alleles stack in such a way that the more S alleles a scarrot has, the more white they have. An SS scarrot has 50-100% white markings, while an Ss scarrot has 1-50% white markings.

        M - no "mold" markings
m - "mold" markings (not actual mold) (just stray white flecks across the scarrot)
      Leaf Colors:
        G - green leaves
        g - yellow leaves
g1 - purple leaves (most recessive; only g1g1 have purple leaves)

Dense colors have darker leaves and dilute colors have lighter leaves.
Leaves can be affected by piebald as well.

Scarrots πŸ₯• FAQ

    Q: What are carrots?
A: According to Wikipedia, "The carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) is a root vegetable, typically orange in color, though heirloom variants including purple, black, red, white, and yellow cultivars exist, all of which are domesticated forms of the wild carrot, Daucus carota, native to Europe and Southwestern Asia. The plant probably originated in Iran and was originally cultivated for its leaves and seeds."
