TY!! I love talking about my work and talking through some of the plotting can be super helpful! Here's a (hopefully brief) outline to give you an idea of where I'm at:
Background; the fantasy world I'm working in is relatively low-magic - there are elves (think Tolkien-esque), dwarves (maybe?) wyrlings (general term for minor-magic creatures) around, but they are few and far between and are often thought to have died off or retreated to the far corners of the world. There are mages, but the mages are typically pretty limited - they are highly specialized and usually only capable of one type of magic (not going to go into too much detail on that but I do have an in-depth magic system). Currently the "cultivated" lands of the main continent are dealing with a really severe famine/crop disease that is causing a shift in populations & politcal climates. The famine also has a magical/evil element but I'm still figuring out what that looks like.
MCs;
- Fenri, MMC - Technically the prince of a small mountainous kingdom (that is really key for it's mountain passes/transport of goods, and also le special ore that can only be mined here) but he is a younger sibling and this kingdom allows the title to pass female heirs so he's just living his chill life as keeper of the aerie. "But everything changes when" his small nation is forced to go to war, one thing leads to another and basically he is forced to agree to a royal marriage with a neighboring kingdom in exchange for their support in said conflict.
Bastian, MMC - (name is in the works, don't know if I love it but I need to call him something for now) he is a Guardsman - part of an old order of elves & men who have dedicated portions of their lives to service (often as recompense for wrongdoing). Also - still figuring this out, but Elves have this sort of hibernation thing they can do when gravely injured - Anyway he wakes up at the start of the book from this hibernation-like state and realizes that A. he isn't at home. B, hundreds of years have passed, C, he has no idea what happened to the Elvish capital (his home) and D, he has the magically calling to find & protect someone via his Guardsman oath. (Alternatively, I could ditch the whole Guardsman thing & just have him randomly happen to find Ari?? Need to figure this out too...)
Lez'Ari/Ari, FMC - she is a mage who has trained since she was young at the Mage's Keep, a little stronghold where the big-main-kingdom-which-still-needs-a-name trains/brainwashes all their mages. It just so happens that she is one of the few exceptions to the whole "mages can only use one type of magic" thing and is actually freakishly powerful, which relates to how she was orphaned as a young child. Our story with her starts as she is "graduating" from mage school and being taken (under heavy guard) (side eye to big-main-kingdom-which-still-needs-a-name) to the capital.
Couple things on the plot;
To be clear - big-main-kingdom-which-still-needs-a-name (hereby known as BMKWSNAN) is also the one that is attacking Fenri's kingdom - BMKWSNAN is kind of desperate because of the famine but also has always been power hungry and using this as an excuse. Bastian intercepts Ari before she can reach the capital and has to try to convince her that BMKWSNAN is not a great as she thinks it is - in time to A, save her life, and B, hopefully use her powers to help prevent the approaching war. Fenri is kinda off doing his own awesome thing for most of the (first) book but his plot is very relevant to the main conflict politically.
What I'm struggling with plot-wise;
- Naming countries lol
-I can't decide the logistics of the famine / source of evil / main source of conflict? The war with BMKWSNAN is a major conflict in book one, but dealing with the famine / evil is going to be a big deal and the main focus of the next book. And also very important to the world building, to understand how that works.
- Honestly can't decide on the romance - either A, how romance-centered I want this to be, or B, whether I ultimately want Ari to end up with Bastian or Fenri? I kind of have two diverging plot lines where one of the guys... well.... spoilers, but it's the kind of thing that would be very helpful to know now lol. Happy to provide more character info/sketches if that helps.
- I also had this related idea on the romance where because of the magical blood in elves, elvish touch has the power to effect human's emotions, it's a pretty small influence but it has lead to elves viewing relationships between elves & humans as icky because..... yeeaaah you get the idea. Which means that when Bastian clearly-and-inevitably falls for Ari, he has some serious moral quandaries about the whole situation (all of which is unknown to Ari since elves aren't around much anymore and not much is known about them). And I can't decide if I like this because of the drama/discourse it adds, or if it actually complicates things beyond a point of fixing. :')
- I need to make a map and got into a very, very deep map-building software rabbit hole. Please send help.
yeah hopefully that is brief enough lol. I appreciate thoughts from anyone on this c:
last edit for the night... probably.... but I also get really excited and might have left out some key details for that to make sense, feel free to ask questions as well!!
- Just kidding, another edit -
So I was reading about your book Ten! First thought - dumb question here probably but oc just means original character right? Does that just mean any character that is yours and not fanfic, ect, or does it mean something else too?
I am super curious about your Bloodborne/blood-arts, is that the werewolf-esque faction in your books? This totally sounds like something I would read!
Also, don't know if this is allowed here but I'm curious what your favorite authors/books series are? If you don't mind sharing c:
