What's character/oc creating/collecting for you?

Is it for roleplays, stories, or simply for the fun of it? Do you buy characters to use for roleplays, or just for fun?

I had a character years ago, I can't remember why I got her - then I did nothing with her. Only really started getting into collecting OCs a few weeks ago. I'm not artistic so can't create art of them myself (maybe one day , lol) but for me I am collecting them to try and inspire me to write again. I use to love writing, but after being on medication for mental health reasons it just really killed my ability to write or have any form of creative outlet. So now I'm trying to use these characters as an opening back to that world, by giving them all personalities and backstories. :)
Hoping one day I'll get back into role-play too, and I plan on using them.

I LOVE making characters, i have lots of fandoms I’m in to do that so.. yay? My main ones are Kathryn, my first OC (and my roblox avatar.. idk how i came up with it, yes the roblox avatar came first) and Stellar, who’s the like icon of my artfight account (Intrstellar)! I also love making wings of fire characters and i like making joke characters like Skrunklefloof.. he’s a cosmic deity btw and hes emo

I make ocs for storylines!I am currently working on making one of them into a webcomic. I would like to maybe make a game one day but I don't have characters or a storyline for that. I Also like to draw my ocs

i switch between being super into writing about them and super into drawing them! i also love finding songs i'd imagine my ocs in scenes where it's playing in the background, makes me want to learn animation so i can draw them myself!

I got into it solely because my friend showed me some of their ocs, and then got me addicted to looking through adoptables, and making stories together. It gave me a lot of inspiration to actually draw again too, I think drawing my ocs have sparked a lot of improvement too. I even started designing my own, and it comes so naturally

Part of it for me is to just have them; I really love art (making or buying it), so some characters honestly exist so I can get art of them ;v;

Some characters are just too cute/cool for me to pass up, some I have history with, a few I actually made myself some time ago, and some exist for story building/writing purposes. Unfortunately with ones that are my writing inspo, I end up buying/making half a million of them and suddenly have a problem with hoarding characters c,:

I see a mix of self indulgence by letting my characters have my favourite traits or collecting inspiration to add to my characters but I also see it as a chance of being creative!
I would like to try to develop my characters more but I stray more towards making too many for my own good.

For me it started as a way to put all I thought about the characters I write stories about down on paper. And sort of a way for me as the author to get to know them more in-depth than the story allowed me to do.

Then after joining CS I found out about the adoptables in the Oekaki board and fell in love with character development. I don't think I ever had any deeper thoughts than how I loved the idea of how it worked, loved the tryouts for them and having them as a way to keep working with my creative interests. Roleplaying I stopped doing many years ago (only me and a friend kept doing it through PMs long after I stopped being active in roleplay forms because she and I really enjoyed roleplaying together), even though I at times do miss roleplaying since it's been a great part in developing my interest for writing.

So the characters I have now are mostly characters I've created for my personal stories. Then there's the ones I've adopted here on CS, bought or adopted from people on dA. And in the past I was a part of the Galari Universe when it was active; it was somewhat a roleplay in a way. But more like in terms of painting. Now it's pretty much dead though, sadly.

Character creating or "worldbuilding" as I refer to it, is a community activity for me. My characters don't exist in a void. Once I give them a name, personality, and backstory I go looking for relationships. This can be friends but more often is a partner/love interest. I find other users with characters that I think would go well with mine. Then I reach out by Cs pm or discord. If the other person is game, it's off to the races!

We will worldbuild together, answering questions like:

How did they meet?
What's their dynamic like at first?
Where do their values align?
How do they fall in love?

Sometimes I roleplay, if the other user is open to it. Sometimes I just write short stories. When we decide on an aspect of their love story I type it out. It's fun for me. I also order couple art!
