indentit was late, but hickorypaw was wide awake.
indentthe young thorn tossed and turned in her nest, unable to get comfortable. it was like she had an itch deep under her fur that she couldn't shake, even after she had gotten up to shake her pelt out for the third time in a row. she fought the urge to get up and stretch again - the last time she had moved, jaypaw had woken up and hissed at her, his mismatched eyes barely open.
indentit wasn't that hickorypaw wanted to be awake. dawn would be here soon enough, and quillflash would be disappointed if hickorypaw was lagging on her paws. and she wanted nothing less than to disappoint her mentor again.
indentbut she couldn't help it. her failure from the morning before kept playing over in her head. she should've passed her assessment. hadn't she wanted it badly enough? gods, she wanted nothing more than to be a rose of highgarden. she adored quillflash and couldn't thank him enough for all the knowledge he had given her. but she felt ready. she knew, deep in her heart, that she was ready to be a full member of the clan. she yearned for it more than anything. she wanted to make her parents and grandparent proud.
indentand it only felt increasingly sour when she knew that her littermates had passed. hickorypaw didn't remember a time when she was apart from almondflash and hickoryblaze for more than a few hours. and now they were halfway across the camp, standing vigil with their new names. by the morning, they would have nests in the knights and roses' den. they'd be off on patrols with the other members of the clan. and where would hickorypaw be? alone, all by herself. and it terrified her.
indentdespite jaypaw's warning hiss from earlier, hickorypaw dared to rise to her paws. almondflash and gingerblaze had previously slept beside hickorypaw, but their nests were now empty. there were several other empty nests in the den where pearlbite, butterflydazzle, and mahoganypool had all slept the night before. but they were now with hickorypaw's littermates.
indentjaypaw snuffled softly in his sleep, his nose buried among moss. nearby, canarypaw and chenillepaw slept soundly while their sister, velveteenpaw, was out on a midnight patrol with her mentor. finally, ivorypaw and pantherpaw slept on jaypaw's other side. the pair were mostly silent as they slept, though hickorypaw watched as pantherpaw's paws twitched, as though the young thorn was running in his dreams.
indenthickorypaw sat down, knowing that lying in her nest wouldn't make her dreams come. instead, she strained her ears, as if she might be able to hear any snippet of conversation from the newly appointed knights and roses that were charged with watching over the clan for their first night as full members. as she sat, hickorypaw could have sworn that she heard something, but she couldn't place it as a voice. instead, it sounded like the whisper of paws on grass towards the camp's boundary.
indentis someone not with the others? hickorypaw wondered, tipping her head to one side. perhaps almondflash was coming to see if hickorypaw was awake. no doubt, hickorypaw and her sister had always been close, but surely almondflash wouldn't be so silly, not tonight. if anyone found out that one of the newly appointed knights or roses wasn't keeping watch, it would spell serious trouble.
indentsuddenly worried for her sister, hickorypaw carefully lowered herself to a crouch and crept towards the edge of the den. she spared one glance in jawpaw's direction, hopeful that he was in a deep sleep and wouldn't wake. jaypaw twitched once when hickorypaw passed him, but the ginger and white tom let out a gentle snore. when she reached the edge of the den, hickorypaw lowered her head and let her eyes adjust to the faint moonlight. it took a moment, but she was able to make out several figures in the middle of the camp, still as statues.
indentthat's definitely gingerblaze... she thought. and that one's butterflydazzle and pearlbite... and mahoganypool... oh, there's almondflash. hickorypaw felt relief, knowing that her sister wasn't foolish enough to risk her new position. that is, until another thought occured to her: if it wasn't one of her friends or littermates that made the noise, then who was sneaking around on the edge of camp?
indentclaystripe smoothed down his long chest fur with a deliberate lick of his tongue before he lifted his muzzle in silverscar's direction. "you've got to stop pacing, you'll just agitate her when she arrives," he said calmly, though there was a warning lilt to his voice. he pressed his lips in a tight line when silverscar scoffed in return.
indent"i hope she's agitated," silverscar snapped. "dawn will be here soon, and then it'll be too late. you heard that mouse-brained queen and her little friends, we're out of time. it has to be tonight."
indentclaystripe supposed that silverscar wasn't entirely wrong, but he wrinkled his nose at the other tom's tone. "even still," he started measuringly, "having your fur bristled like that is just asking for another scar." though he was blind, claystripe didn't need to see to know the wound that had earned silverscar his name. he was there, he remembered the smell of blood that it brought. he knew that morningtail, though younger than the pair of toms, wouldn't hesitate to remind silverscar of their last encounter.
indentsilverscar let out a soft growl, but said nothing for some time. claystripe went back to grooming, though his companion's words echoed in his head - dawn was coming, and they were out of time. they had to attack tonight, before highgarden awoke.
indentit was lucky that silverscar and claystripe had managed to infiltrate the clan when they had. any longer, and they would have missed their chance. if morningtail and the others had it their way, they would have waited to attack for several more moons. during that time, they would have continued to pick at the clan's defenses, catching cats unawares and frightening those who remained. but tawnyrose would be attacking before the moon crested again, and they couldn't give highgarden that chance. not when the clan was so ripe for the taking. so they'd sped up their timeline. and that was fine, their group was adaptable.
indentclaystripe began to feel his muscles stiffen by the time silverscar began to pace again, but he said nothing. if he didn't trust his instincts as much as he did, he would have thought that the energy building in the air was nothing more than a breeze or approaching rainstorm. but many seasons had taught claystripe when to trust his gut. and, soon, he knew that silverscar felt the same tremble on the air. it was the feeling of a large group of cats approaching.
indent"about time," silverscar muttered to himself, just loud enough for claystripe's keen ears to catch. together, they waited, hoping that the group would be faster than the approaching dawn. but claystripe already knew that they would be. there would be blood before the sun rose, he knew these things.
indentprimrosebriar woke from her dream with a start, feeling as though her heart was beating in her chest. for a moment, she sat straight up, frozen still from the shock that made her whiskers quiver, though she only had the faint impression of a voice in the back of her mind. but, when her eyes searched the den, wildly looking for an explanation of her sudden fright, she found nothing. she was faced with the slight of her friends and family, sleeping soundly among piles of moss and feathers. even still, primrosebriar didn't move immediately. she remained sitting, focusing as she tried to look beyond the sight right before her eyes.
indent"maplefrost?" she whispered, quiet as falling snow. "was that you?" primrosebriar asked. she waited for a long moment, aware that her breath was still caught in her thought and her heart was still pounding against her ribs. she tried to remember what her dream was, but she couldn't recall.
indent"are you trying to tell me something?" she asked. it wasn't the first time that she had spoken to her sister. though maplefrost had perished many seasons earlier, primrosebriar had always felt a strong connection with her sister, even after death. and, sometimes, she could see and hear maplefrost. sometimes, maplefrost had something to say.
indentprimrosebriar breathed out through clenched teeth, unable to still her heart. then, ever so slightly, she felt the fur at the back of her neck ruffle, as though someone was breathing right behind her. "... not... not sat... not... safe..." came the voice, and primrosebriar shivered. there was no mistaking maplefrost's words.
indent"what's not safe?" primrosebriar asked quietly. her eyes searched the den once more, but she couldn't find anything out of place. right next to her, asterblink and buttercupnose were asleep. buttercupnose's tail was covering his face, and asterblink's flank rose and fell rhythmically. "maplefrost, i need help."
indent"t... c..." came maplefrost's reply, but she sounded so distant, too far for primrosebriar to hear. she shut her eyes, concentrating hard. she focused on the darkness behind her eyelids, trying to silence asterblink's snoring and the feeling of buttercupnose's fur against her own. she let the rest of the den fall away. then, when primrosebriar blinked again, maplefrost was there, a faint outline among the living. "they're coming, primrosebriar," maplefrost said urgently, her eyes wide.
indentfear pierced primrosebriar's heart. "who? who's coming?" she asked, but she already knew. and, when maplefrost spoke again, already fading from view, primrosebriar was already on her paws.
indent"they're here, sister. it's too late."
indentbutterflydazzle was on her paws first, ready to welcome the midnight patrol back to camp. she expected to see velveteenpaw lagging behind avocetgaze, ayalla's eyes glassy with exhaustion, and hazelfeather's amused grin. but, instead, butterflydazzle's jaws parted in a scream as pawsteps pounded closer, heavy and intimidating. this wasn't the patrol they had been expecting.
indentthough her scream didn't carry far before the young rose was cut off, it was enough to get her friends on their paws to face the sudden barrage, and pearlbite's yowl rang through the clearing, alerting the few who were awake through the camp.
indentin the knights and roses' den, primrosebriar was already waking up her clanmates. "highgarden is under attack!" she shouted. "the rogues are here, wake up! protect the clan!" and, in the thorns' den, hickorypaw jabbed a paw into jaypaw's side, waking her denmate.
indent"jaypaw," hickorypaw hissed to wake him up. "we gotta get the others up - quickly!"
indentthe attack from the rogues came quickly, but highgarden wasn't slow to answer. within a moment, the clearing had exploded with cats as the highgarden members emerged from the den to meet the strangers pouring in from the camp entrance.
indenttempestcreek and harrierglide poked their heads out of the nursery as soon as they heard the first shouts, just in time to face a rogue barreling in their direction. without a second to waste, tempestcreek shoved harrierglide back. "protect my kits!" she yowled to the other mother before whirling on the rogue. the sturdy tabby met her strike with a grin, flashing yellowed teeth. he came in close, snapping at tempestcreek's throat, but the long-haired rose was faster. she batted him away skillfully, raking her claws down his cheek. at the same time, she caught a flash of orange fur in her peripherals. the rogue lunged at her again, but zephyrwind came from the side, bowling the rogue over before he had the chance to steady himself. the two knotted together as they battled. they were lost to the battle before tempestcreek to jump to assist her brother, and she had to turn to block another attack, fury lighting her eyes as she fought for the nursery.
indentmeanwhile, at the other end of camp, otterfur quietly begged driftripple and palerain to hide in a thorn bush, his eyes searching and desperate.
indent"we have to fight," driftripple rasped in argument. despite her age, her eyes were bright in anger, and she looked over otterfur's shoulder to where sagecloud and brindlepelt stood side-by-side, ready to jump at the first rogue that came close.
indent"i don't see you trying to hide them away," palerain added. "we're not going to stand and hide while the kits are attacked. highgarden needs every set of claws, and mine haven't faded to dust just yet." in any other case, palerain would have said it with a laugh. this time, her voice was solid as bedrock, and otterfur's heart ached.
indent"we need you alive," he argued. otterfur had known war before, and he knew what happened in these cases. cats like driftripple and palerain rarely lived to see daylight. and he couldn't lose his friends.
indentdriftripple opened her mouth to bite out an argument, but was cut off when erasmus came from behind otterfur. his one yellow eye stared hard at otterfur. "we don't have time for this. if they want to fight, then so be it."
indent"but -" otterfur began, but was cut off.
indent"we don't have time," erasmus repeated. otterfur grit his teeth, but he knew it was a lost cause. he listened to the screams from just outside the den and knew erasmus was right. "just stay out of the thick of it, and stay close to me," erasmus said to driftripple and palerain, who didn't argue. he turned back to sagecloud and brindlepelt, who appeared grim. sagecloud nodded at the group. erasmus stepped forward, closer to the entrance where the fighting was headed in their direction. "on my count. one... two... three... go!"
indentas they entered the fighting, solsticestand bustled past, ravenpaw hot on her heels. they each carried a bundle of cobwebs as they headed towards seedspring's wail. ravenpaw watched in horror as his mentor went to seedspring's side. the pretty tabby was crouched over a still form, and another ear-splitting wail broke through the noise of fighting. for a moment, solsticestand poked her nose through stagscorch's thick pelt, but ravenpaw already knew that the knight was gone. he was beyond their help, and solsticestand's gaze locked with ravenpaw's. "can you get her back to our den?" she asked. "i need to get butterflydazzle and gingerblaze," she said, and ravenpaw knew that he had no choice. he had to get seedspring to safety. he nodded numbly, and solsticestand looked at him for a moment longer, but she didn't have the chance to say anything before a rogue bared closer towards the trio. ravenpaw knew that solsticestand would be safe, he had to feel it. as foxspark lunged at the attacker, ravenpaw nudged seedspring to her paws.
indentsmokemane fought alongside her mate and brother. these days, she often had to remind herself of impact her old injury had on her ability to move and react as quickly as other cats. she would never be able to match the speed of another battling cat, but smokemane wouldn't sit back and hide while her friends and family fought. she simply couldn't.
indentbut, when a rogue lunged from her right, smokemane was too slow to call a warning to obsidianwing. before a sound left her mouth, her mate was aleady underneath the other cat, and he snarled with rage and pain as the cat's claws dug into his belly. horror gripped smokemane's heart, squeezing it tight. "sunglow, help!" she gasped, a second too late. sunglow whirled around, his muzzle dripping blood a wound of his own. he tackled the cat, giving obsidianwing the chance to wriggle free. his eyes met smokemane's, pupils blown wide, and smokemane nudged him away from the fighting.
indent"i-i'm sorry! i saw too late," she gasped as she burried her nose in his shoulder. before she could say anything else, she felt obsidianwing tremble, and she looked up at her mate, only to watch as his legs collapsed out from under him. "obsidianwing!"
indent"i'm okay," he panted as smokemane searched him, nosing through his fur. but it was clear in that moment that they both knew the truth: he wasn't okay.
indent"i'm so sorry, it's my fault," smokemane wailed, but obsidianwing shook his head with as much force as he could manage.
indent"no," he said. "no, my love. i'm sorry."
indent"don't leave me, obsidianwing. you can't do this. you can't," smokemane sobbed. already, she could feel his breaths going shallow as his strength bled into the soil. "don't do this to me."
indent"i'm with you, my love," he said. "you're so strong. protect them, and know that i'm with you," he whispered, fainter by the heartbeat. "i'm with you..." he trailed off, and smokemane sobbed. but it lasted only a moment before sunglow rushed to her side. they locked eyes, and smokemane nodded, just once. she would come back from her mate, but her family, her clan, still needed her to be strong.
indentsoftglow found tawnyrose in thickest part of the fighting. one of her ears were torn, but birchflame fought at her side. together, they appeared a force of nature, batting the rogues away with flashing claws and bared teeth. softglow shouted a warning to the pair, and birchflame kicked backwards at an incoming rogue, sending the cat skittering back long enough for daystrike, who was nearby, to grab the rogue by the tail and gain his attention. with another shout, wheattuft joined the fray. the rogue battered wheattuft for a moment, enough to draw blood, before daystrike snarled and stepped in once more.
indentwhen tawnyrose saw softglow and their eyes locked, he recognized the fatigue in her face. though she and birchflame appeared to have it handled, it was clear that they were stuck in the hardest part of fighting. softglow bit and clawed at a figure enough to get closer to his queen.
indent"what's your report?" tawnyrose grit out, and it took softglow a moment to speak.
indent"they seem to keep sending in reinforcements," he said. and it was true, for as many rogues as highgarden drove away, it seemed that fresh rogues kept pouring into the battle. "not sure if they have backup posted at the entrance or not. it looks like they've also taken out part of the camp walls."
indentbirchflame growled furiously when a rogue came too close. he swiped his paw down the cat's nose and sent him reeling back with a well-placed swat to the side of his head. "they knew we were coming for them. they had to get us first."
indent"it's too late to worry about that," tawnyrose snapped. she darted forward to bite at a tabby's ear, effectively shredding it, before she returned to cover softglow and birchflame. "losses?"
indent"more than i care to count," softglow grit out. "merlinsong and the others are doing what they can, but these cats didn't come to toy with us. they came to kill," he said. "the wilted are fighting, and bluetcrest gathered a group to protect the nursery, but they won't hold forward."
indent"gods," tawnyrose spat as another rogue dared to edge closer. her hackles raised, but birchflame was faster, pouncing with claws outstretched. "any suggestions?"
indent"flee?" softglow said, though it sounded impossibly bitter on his tongue. "send an envoy to groveclan for aid?"
indent"they won't make it," birchflame hissed. "we'll all be dead by then."
indentat the same time, snipewish ran over to them trio. though she had a swath of cobwebs on her shoulder, it was stained red and she listed heavily to one side. for a moment, softglow thought the young rose might collapse, but she steadied and softglow rested his tail on her shoulder. "bluetcrest is asking for aid, the rogues are closing in on the nursery."
indentbirchflame and tawnyrose exchanged a wide-eyed glance, and tawnyrose whispered: "they're going for the kits." tawnyrose tipped her head in his direction. "you go, softglow will stay here." she reached up to touch her mate's nose, just for a moment, before she nudged away. "i'll find you soon, go," she urged. though birchflame hesitated for a moment, he nodded once to softglow before turning and following snipewish towards the nursery.
indenttawnyrose looked at softglow, and softglow felt his heart twist. "would you fight with me?" she asked quietly, and softglow nodded.
indent"i'd fight with you to the end," he said, and he watched as tawnyrose's eyes watered.
indent"thank you, softglow, for being a friend after all. i don't think i've ever thanked you for all that you've done." tawnyrose flashed a slight smile, at the very corner of her maw. before softgow could answer, a question on the tip of his tongue, a rogue snarled, capturing his attention. together, he and tawnyrose turned to face the attacker, and the thought faded like mist.

- OVERVIEW
• the war against the rogues takes a turn for the worst as the camp is attacked. though highgarden fought back and each cat did their best to defend the clan, highgarden suffered a massive and decisive defeat, ending with the queen's death, cherryfire's flight from camp with several of her closest friends and allies, and morningtail's appointment to oversee highgarden. morningtail makes a deal with the survivors: obey the rogue leader's will and they will not be killed or driven from their home. without tawnyrose's leadership and cherryfire on the run, softglow, birchflame, and bluetcrest are left to handle the clan as co-leaders. they reluctantly agree to morningtail's terms, knowing that there are kits and injured cats who would not survive if they were driven from their home.
• meanwhile, cherryfire and the other cats who managed to escape from the attack settle in a makeshift camp outside of highgarden's borders. they regroup, ensuring that they weren't followed, before settling in for the night. by daybreak, cherryfire sets herself to organizing the small group and planning how they will be able to set highgarden free from the rogues.
• both groups remain determined to make the best of their present situations and look towards the future, eager to right the wrongs placed before them and return highgarden to its former glory by any means necessary.

• while the rogues agree to allow highgarden to maintain many of the same ranks as before, the wardens-system was dissolved under the rogue rule. in their place, several rogues have been stationed among the clan to report back to the rogue leader and ensure that highgarden follows within their agreement. alongside claystripe and silverscar, morningtail is approinted to oversee the highgarden cats.
- • while separated from the rest of the clan and unable to take her mother's former position as queen, cherryfire assumes the role of leader over the cats who successfully fled the rogue attack. though living on the very edge of highgarden's tradition, cherryfire decides to name chestnutsway as her attendent.
• solsticestand and ravenpaw remain as herbalists, with solsticestand taking over as ravenpaw's mentor for the time being.
