since it's been decades since the rule to not leave the island was decided, many cats don't know the true origin of the reasoning. some say the original royal family was outcasted by their original clan for some large sin, making them unable to return to the mainlands. some believe that large monsters, the size of the big cats that roam the savannah biome, hide on the mainlands, ready to snatch up any cat that dares travel into their territory. in reality, there's no danger lurking out there -- at least nothing more dangerous than usual.

the hawthorns started as a simple family, with a matriarch, a patriarch and three kits. the family had fled to the island shortly after the patriarch... well, did some damage to the leader of his former clan. escaping being tried for his crimes, hawthorn (the patriarch's name) and his expecting matriarch, lilac, broke out of their old camp, running as far as they could before the sun rose, hiding their scent as they went. their journey led them to a magnificent island, seemingly untouched by other cats, with multiple beautiful biomes, fit with different flora and fauna. hawthorn worked hard to make a section of the grasslands a home for him and his new family, building them a comfortable den and learning the lay of land - what was best and easiest hunt, which herbs grew near his home and what they did, all the useful items he could use.

when lilac gave birth to hawthorn's three kits, he was ecstatic - but he didn't want to risk losing his kits to the clan still persecuting him for his old crimes. in his brain, he believed that he was forgiven, now that he had birthed three perfect children, all on his own. he knew that he had to protect them, from everything, keep them alive to grow strong. therefore, since their children were kits, hawthorn and lilac told them that there were dangers outside the borders, things they couldn't even dream about, that would be stronger and faster than them. eagle, hawk and owl grew up scared of leaving their family behind, not even daring to leave the eyes of their parents.

unfortunately, their overprotectiveness didn't do too much justice. hawthorn was slain by a badger while defending his family, a poisonous snake bit hawk, and a coyote got owl one day while he was hunting. just like that, lilac had lost most of her family, left only with her young adult son, eagle.

so when a group of outsiders showed up, half-starved and exhausted, lilac invited them to live with her and her son. she needed someone to continue on her bloodline with her son, therefore a new group of cats to introduce was good for her. she told them that she had seen horrible things among the border of the island, things she couldn't even explain. the outsiders agreed that life outside of the island was dangerous, and the rumor mill spread, even as the royal family lineage continued and more and more outsiders were brought it. any cat that came from hardship was easy to get to tell the same story, while any cats that didn't were told to go away, not even allowed to see the inside of the island, where the other cats were.

nowadays, the danger from outside of the borders is told to every kitten born within the clan. they don't take in many more outsiders, only very rarely, as more cats from the outside increases the risk of their perfect bubble being popped. all cats don't leave the island, and all exit routes are watched.

It was a cold winter morning.. Everything seemed calm on the outside of the camp for a moment until it wasn’t calm anymore.

“Wolf please you can't do this!” Kefira pleaded as she looked up at Wolf who was standing on the high rock above her.
“Yes. yes i can do this” Wolf replied as he stared down at Kefira and Sheep who was covering behind her.

It had been a few days after the clan's leader Misha had passed away, she hadn't chosen an heir for the leader position which gave Wolf the opportunity to claim the leadership of the clan as the oldest sibling.

“wolf.. please don't do this..” Apricot pleaded at her mate, but nobody could change wolfs mind now.. it was too late for that now.

“I will do what i want!” Wolf hissed back at apricot with a glare “My decision is final Kefira and sheep are exiled from this day onwards, Sparrow may stay in the clan as long as he does his job as a hunter without disappearing on his small adventures” He spoke with an authoritative tone as he looked down at his younger siblings

Rune, do your job and make sure these two are out of the territory by nightfall, oh and make sure to find and tell sparrow the news” Wolf said as he turned to go into his new den “meeting dismissed”

As soon as Wolf said Salamander trotted to Kefira “i'll join you two.. i don't want to stay here when he's the leader” they said as they glanced at the den where wolf went

“Salamander, please just.. stay here it's better for you that way… Your Brothers would be sad if you left with us without saying goodbye to them” Kefira said as she looked into his soft amber eyes

He shook his head “no, i will come with you and sheep, you can't change my mind besides Kala and Crow will understand”

“Alright you two, it's time to start moving” Rune scoffed as he started moving towards the camps exit

Kefira let out a sigh as she turned to look at sheep who had been quiet the whole time “are you alright sheep? you have been awfully quiet”

Sheep nodded “y-yeah i'm fine just a bit surprised that Wolf chose to do this..”
Kefira nudged her softly “Don't worry.. we'll find a way to fix this.. but for now let's start moving.. I would rather not listen to Wolf yell at us again..”

as the three started following Rune they couldn't help but look back at the camp one last time before leaving..

it took until sunfall for them to be at the border of the territory
“I guess this is it then? our new start?” Sheep asked as rune left the trio on the border..
“yeah.. I guess it is” Kefira nodded, “So which way do we go from here?” she added as she looked around the snowy terrain
“well… i do know where one of my brothers who isn't a part of a clan lives.. we could go pay him a visit? he knows a lot of good places to hunt and settle down in” Salamander suggested
“yeah i suppose we can go visit your brother.. what was his name again?” Sheep asked

“His name is Crow the bringer of Fire but he usually goes by Tuikku, shall we get moving? i feel like it's going to start snowing soon” Salamander said as he looked at sheep and kefira

The siblings nodded and so the trio started their journey towards a new territory, a new start and hopefully a new clan.

One aspect of my lore I've recently been playing around with is the different worlds I have. I started developing this for an "impress me" prompt but basically there are three main worlds for my cats. The Ntoto (earth, realm of the living), the Kayengele (realm of the spirits) and the Mayinda (the liminal, the space between worlds, also realm of dreams). My cats reside mostly in the Ntoto and that's the main realm. One of my cats, an Ntomi (sort of a similar role to a priest) has actually traveled to the Kayengele via passage by a minor deity. How most spirits interact with the real world is actually by leaving the Kayengele and inhabiting the Mayinda. The veil between the Mayinda and the Ntoto is thin which is why sometimes you can see, hear, feel, or in other ways observe spirits. All three of the worlds are stacked on top of each other and look very similar except for different inhabitants and different colors. Some minor deities can leave their body in one world and project their soul or another's soul in a different world or the deities can just move through the worlds once they gain the Mazabu Kinabi (the sacred knowledge)

A lot of my lore hinges on the relationship between these worlds and my cats and the spirits because my cats are deeply spiritual. They have special burial practices for example to help protect the souls to join the spirit world. One special burial practice is they bury past leaders sitting up with their mask in their hand in a vast cave system with the deeper you go the older the leaders. Side note: I mentioned masks but basically each leader has a mask they have acquired through looting the old twoleg village in which they live. The leader never removes it except for extremely special circumstances and it is removed during death.

“just a little more, i promise. i promise, my dear kit.”
    “…i’m cold.”
“i know, dear, it’ll be over soon.”

heavy snow continued to fall, painting the dense forest a blank slate. it was the middle of leaf-bare, and one of the coldest days of the year. amongst the trees, a young she-cat treaded through the treacherous blizzard, holding what looked to be a a miniature bundle of fluff by the nape.

“are- are we there yet?” the youngster perked up, his world barely audible through the raging winds. there was no answer. “mom?” he wriggled in the older cats grip, feeling a sudden wave of cold spread across his frail body when he fell to the ground. “what- what are you doing?! darling, please, it’s dangerous! do you want to freeze—” she paused, frozen in the midst of the snow. someone was watching. “we need to leave.” his mother acted quickly, grabbing him at the nape and trudging through the thick snowfall, but the pair of eyes never left. not even for a split second.

they were getting closer, and closer, and closer.

eventually, the environment became far too much to handle for the two. it was cold and wet, and the snow atop their backs began weighing them down. the she-cat broke down, dropping her kit to the snow floor where he could barely move. “listen close,” she eyed the feeble kit, gasping for air between words — these words, however, were left unsaid

    it’s here. it’s here. it’s here.

the she-cat spun her head around and widened both eyes at the sight. her body twisted and with the little strength she had, protected the petite wolf behind her.
“didn’t you have enough! you took my entire family, but you won’t take this away from me. not this time!” her cries weak and unstable. the predator, littered with scars, simply looked ahead, lacking any form of emotion across their face.

    slowly it crept nearer.

“stay away! you beast, leave my child alone!” she continued, stumbling over her words countless times, her body barely holding on. meanwhile, the young wolf sat covered by the snow, his pelt, while camouflaged, was soaking wet and freezing.
her words had no effect; the creature leapt, jaws wide open and fast approaching. wolfkit shut his eyes, and in that moment it felt like all had come to a halt — for a second, there was peace followed by an uncomfortable silence. when his eyes finally opened, he saw his mother tussled in a battle against the larger predator. wolf froze, unable to move nor speak, and while he stood there…his mother was…no, no, no.

the she-cat was now pinned to the ground, wounded heavily and oh, so tired. she’d fought to the very end, but nevertheless, was unable to successfully scrape her way out, the only thing she could do now was succumb to the growing pain across her body. “…run, wolf, run—“ were the very last words wolfkit heard before his mother perished to the creature striking her nape. he didn’t take any chances, and despite the immense struggle he faced, wolf began moving. the journey had lasted only a few minutes before the vile beast caught up, and wolf was sure this was it.
he was going to die, just like his mother.

in the seconds before the predator attacked, something, another creature had leapt out from behind the trees, followed by another… and another, and one more. they were big, tall, brutish. wolf observed, wide-eyed and panicked as they pinned the attacker down. he couldn’t watch, not this time, and cowered instead, quietly sobbing to himself. let them take me, he thought, too tired to move.

but they weren’t here to hurt him.

      The first Mythweaver

From the moment Mauste opened their eyes, Leijona knew that they would succeed in the world. There was this strange intelligence to those eyes, observant and curious but not without caution. In their young age, all of Harja and Leijona’s four kits were full of energy, a wild torrent of fur and fangs and noise that was at once exhausting and reassuring. The first kits born to the Wanderers in many years, Mauste and their littermates were a sign of their changing fortune and they were hope for the future. Leijona never forgot that but at times she lost sight of it, she could never explain or justify the impulsiveness of her kits. They were all outgoing and vocal however there was a point when Mauste and their littermates were nearly 6 months old that it seemed like a candle had gone out with the wind, inexplicably they became more withdrawn and quiet. They became an observer for some time, on the sidelines of their littermates’ games by choice. Not for one moment did Mauste take their eyes off their littermates as they play-fought and ran around camp, keeping up with ease and studying them with their intelligent, warm pastel pink and orange eyes.

Leijona’s heart broke when Mauste decided to leave them. She still remembered when they held a bow for the first time, so calm as they drew the bowstring with a steady hand. The surprise sparkled only in their eyes, a fascination with the tension of the bow that was stronger than they expected bloomed in that moment. Mauste understood something fundamental about the world in that moment, as the fine grained wood curved, the ends curling towards each other while they drew back without an arrow nocked. From Leijona’s perspective there was a wonderment that went further than she knew behind those intelligent eyes, holding the tension as if hesitant to lose it again. Drawing without an arrow was a matter of caution of course but Harja and Leijona both knew from the instant Mauste held that bow with confidence and patience that there was no need for such worry, their eyes were focused and arms steady even at full draw of the bowstring.

Mauste came to know of the changing world very young, the Wanderers crested a large hill with only a few sparse oaks along its ridge in a line. The trees’ trunks were gnarled something awful and dry as the fields during the greenleaf solstice, cracks in the wood glowed with a faint cerulean color. The others were cautious, Harja and Leijona as well, but while their littermates chattered excitedly and their nervous energy seeped into the crowd like a herd Mauste’s keen gaze observed intently. That logical, analytical mind picked out a curiosity of the world and as they stepped from the crowd to the crest of the hill at Leijona’s side and looked out over the horizon to the beasts that roamed below, a kind of resolve formed itself in their mind. It was the first time that Mauste felt clearly the sense of the Weave in the world. This thrumming sensation like elation that curled and danced at the ends of their fur, an unknown sense that the other Wanderers didn’t understand. Not noticing them, Leijona’s lip curled in disgust at the beast that wandered the fields below with their gooey skin and boils, their limping gate and gurgling cries dissettled her deeply in a way she couldn’t describe. Mauste on the other hand had only curiosity, picking out details of the monsters’ behavior that others wouldn’t care to pick out themselves. Only that observant mind could grasp the sense of a power in the air that could be only felt and not seen, the others ignorant to the potential at their fingertips.

Mauste began to experiment with the Weave after that time, straying from the nomads to find their own path and using their newfound sense to reunite with them instead. At first only small distances and then further and further they wandered from their family, Harja knew not to worry Leijona because unknown to either of them, he was watching their promising young kit discover a strength he knew would only benefit them. However, when Leijona found out that Mauste was using the Weave to discover the path she became furious, meddling in the unnatural ways of the world was sure to get her killed, she remembered the plague that struck them before… the cerulean that stained their skin and choked them to death. Even death did not give them peace, after death the Weave animated them like puppets and they struck out at those around them who had once cared and known them greatly, desperate to grasp at the essence of life they once had. Inevitably a divide began to build, driving itself between Leijona and Mauste until she was sure they would never again see the same side of the coin.

As Mauste stood, bundled up in the warm furs passed down to them from other Wanderers and watched their mother’s back disappear from the wood at the edge of the prairie river, a sinking feeling settled in their gut. They knew that unless reunited, the Wanderers would run forever. They would never find a place of their own, they would never feel safe anywhere again. Their world was changing, bringing with it aberrations that tugged their hearts with fear, it was the reason Leijona refused to stay behind with Mauste. Others stood behind them, waiting with confusion and unease at standing still for so long for Mauste to tell them what they were to do next. A long moment of silence and stillness passed while they watched the last of the nomads seep from their decided place of rest, away from the wood they’d hoped would shelter them from the warping of the Weave. The first thing they teach their new people was to use the Weave to sense trouble, a task that was no easy feat when they were all taught that it was a source of evil and corruption from birth. It was then that Mauste decided for certain what this was all about, they would adapt to the changing world and take advantage of its potential, from then on the occupants of the camp with its golden embroidered green tents and large firepit outlined in a low wall of intentionally placed stones called themselves the Mythweavers. It was leadership that Mauste had been destined for, it was no pleasure to separate from their family but they knew it must be done in the same way that Leijona knew from the moment they opened their eyes that Mauste would be different from anyone else they’d ever known.

    ↬ word count: 539 words
↬ prompt: The Moon Tree is something that I am excited to develop! With the introduction of a new rank - Seers - I wanted to delve more into the belief system of TreeClan. Since it's forest based, and a lot of the cats are named from nature/trees/forest type things, I started thinking about something the cats would find as their symbol. At first I wasn't sure that I wanted the TreeClan cats to really have a belief system, but thinking on it more I think many of them would just based on their personalities. So as Shrewshimmer gets introduced to the clan, she would bring with her the introduction of the Moon Tree.

At the edge of the clan territory, there is a swamp that not many of the cats go to on the fact that they just don't want wet paws. While a few may go over to chase frogs, it ends up being buggy in the warmer months and not worth the effort in the colder months. Yet, Shrewshimmer encourages others to go with her to the swampy area, and she leads her clanmates into the hollow trunk of a large tree - the hollowed trunk reaches higher than the cats can see, and at first they don't even believe that there's a way this tree is hollow, until they're inside.

On the inside, many cats feel overwhelmed with claustrophobia. Ones like Shrewshimmer are calm, knowing that StarClan (or whatever it might be called, I haven't decided if it will be 'StarClan' necessarily, since I might do a more nature route rather than ancestor clan route) is guiding their paws inside. The hollow trunk houses some vegetation that reflects the moonlight that comes into the trunk from the sky, almost giving the surroundings a glowing effect that highlights the way underground for the cats to encounter the deepest root. The Deep Root (not sure if the name would be kept) is where cats would settle; usually nestling underneath it, the back of their pelt or some part of their body touching the root, so that they can share dreams with nature.

One aspect that might come into play is a more nature-esque aspect of the spiritual world of the TreeClan cats. Maybe there isn't really an ancestor clan at all, but rather the cats share visions with nature. I might go this route instead because the cats would feel more connected with nature and with their forest, and would be able to feel that their forest is set apart from others they might come across when exploring. It would also tie into a more protected view of the nature around them, where Icebird (the healer of the clan), who has a garden, might have a more spiritual aspect as to why he keeps a garden, making him feel less eccentric from the other cats, as I don't want him to just be seen as strange, but rather that there is a method to his madness, so to speak. This would also make sense for cats that might have animal companions, to have a more sense of unity with the other animals that come into the forest, especially with Tomatobuzz who might be plagued with attracting the attention of horseflies.

↬ prompt: i've honestly been meaning to create an entirely separate clan for the gods/deities that oversee Rosemary Meadows but i just haven't had the time or energy. for the sake of participation, i'll talk about it here!

for each type of task (gardening, scouting, gathering, fishing, etc.) there is a deity that oversees that specific domain. for example, fishing. there are two water-related deities a fisher might pray to. i haven't named them yet but for the sake of brevity i'll call them sea & river. sea is the wilder of the two and oftentimes is the one prayed to by fishers who fish in the ocean, whereas river is the calmer, more protective deity who is prayed to for safety and a decent catch.

i think it will be relatively up to the individual cat whether or not they believe in the gods, as they rarely show face and those who have seen them are regarded as delusional by non-believers. i'm not religious myself so this isn't personal at all fhdhdh, just some plot!

some deities were unheard of in Rosemary Meadows until certain cats came along and brought word of them, adding to the whole melting-pot feeling of the Meadows. whether a cat believes in the gods or not, some still pray for the sake of uncertainty and while not particularly religious, do it out of habit more than piousness.

anyway i think that's all for now! i hope this counts toward the prompt, i haven't been in much of a mood to write lately but i do still have ideas brewing in my noggin. if it doesn't count, just veto this post, i don't mind!

Silver Antler was adopted into The Marshland Settlement by Little Pine’s sister, Mellow Leaves. Her and Little Pine had been estranged for several seasons, so when Mellow Leaves had a litter of two kittens and then adopted Silver Antler, Little Pine wanted nothing to do with any of them.

You can imagine Little Pine’s surprise and subsequent dread when their name was called at the ceremony to have all three of Mellow Leaves’ kits made into apprentices. Little Pine was assigned to Silver Antler; an intentional move by Towering Fir, the leader, as the quarrel between Little Pine and their sister was becoming dangerous and he needed a way to mend it for the good of the settlement.

Although Silver Antler wasn’t related to Mellow Leaves by blood, it didn’t matter to Little Pine; all they saw was a problem kitten raised by (according to them) the worst cat in the settlement. It was offensive to Little Pine that they had to mentor this kit. It wasn’t easy or friendly at first - Little Pine often brushed off Silver Antler in favor of other activities, landing them several scoldings from Hissing Adder, the settlement’s second in command. Reluctantly, Little Pine began actually training Silver Antler.

Training him did little to fix Little Pine’s quarrels; they can hold a grudge, and even now they still hold disdain towards Silver Antler. He was a frustrating student, and Little Pine saw a lot of his mother in his mannerisms, from speech pattern to work ethic. It was exhausting, but nothing a few strong words and tough jobs couldn’t fix, taboo as they were. Silver Antler is still mischievous at times by nature, but, when he needs to be, he’s been shaped into a firm, level headed warrior by Little Pine’s harsh teachings.

    ↬ clan archive: Enurian

    ↬ word count: 619 words
    ↬ prompt:
The Enurian ferrocat pantheon is a rich and varied set of deities, each associated with three to five different domains, ones all connected to each other within the ferrocat culture.

These gods are real in the sense that they can be seen, touched, and interacted with when they are visiting the island, and unreal in the sense that a different set of cosmic laws apply to them. In the same way an ant would not grasp the true complexity of a supercomputer, a ferrocat mortal cannot grasp the true complexity of one of their deities, and so often a ferrocat god will "tone themselves down," taking on a mortal form to interact with their followers or mortals. Each god will have their own preferred forms, but can theoretically take on any form. When not interacting with their mortals, these deities have their own realm which they retreat to, one that mortals are unable to access unless in very extreme circumstances. Different deities have different comfort levels when interacting with mortals—To Stand in Awe is very rarely seen on the island, while Pawstep Between Worlds only returns to the deities' realm when they absolutely must.

Just as the ferrocats themselves do, their gods take on two different names. Unlike the ferrocat's two-part name fused into one, to symbolize the two separate but combined pieces of a ferrocat's soul, their gods' two names are never used in conjunction with one another. Instead, they take on a long and complex title name, one in which mortals unfamiliar with the god may use, and a personal and more secretive name, one in which only followers of that god and other gods themselves may use.

Deities are made when ferrocat culture grows and shifts to accommodate a new concept. Primordial gods like She of First Breath, and To Stand in Awe, were born alongside the dawn of ferrocat sapience, and often have domains surrounding very old and primal concepts—awe, luck, sapience, duality. Older gods often personify domains surrounding concepts the ferrocats have stumbled across or discovered—Sparking of a Blade sprung fully formed out of the ferrocat's first blacksmithing forge, and From the Dirt to the Stars rose from the ferrocat's first martyr. A god can be made in many ways, from appearing fully formed, to rising from mortalhood to godhood, to being born from a god themselves, but a god will only form if there is space in the ferrocat culture to hold it. Likewise, the only way a ferrocat deity can die is if they are no longer remembered by their mortals. Curiously, once a deity is formed, history will retroactively shift to make their domain always theirs. Pawstep Between Worlds has always been the deity of liminal spaces, even though chronologically they were only born very recently. Likewise, the death of a deity will retroactively make it so that there was never a god of that domain. In that way, though any deity is endlessly stronger than even the most powerful mortal, they are nothing in comparison to the ferrocat culture as a whole. The whims of culture shape the gods' domains, not the other way around.

Any cat can pray to any deity they please, so long as the domain is relevant to what they are praying to. However, cats with certain jobs, cultures, or personality traits may choose a patron deity to dedicate their life towards. One may only choose one deity throughout their lifetime, the process is often long and difficult, and not all deities are open to followers. However, becoming a follower of a deity is likely to grant you boons, as deities are notoriously soft for any mortal who chose to follow them.

*note; She of First Breath is an NPC and missing to the world at large, only included here as background information.

Re: Stars V.2 • Catvent

    ↬ catvent day: two

    ↬ username & id: BananaSnake
↬ clan archive: Tribe of the Elementals

    ↬ word count: 353 words
↬ prompt: I’ve been trying to come up with a lot of things… for example, what exactly Bright and Blizzard’s relationship was before they left, if Blizzard still feels guilty about leaving Bright to fend for themselves for a few moons (and how he attempts to make it up to her), how and where they made up, where Flickerspark comes into this, their relationship with Flickerspark… the list goes on and on. But I also really need, or rather, want, to come up with why the cats of the Tribe have powers in the first place, and why Blizzard and Bright weren’t aware of theirs when they lived in the city. Then there’s the matter of figuring out traditions relating to the powers, why they live in the mountains, and possibly changing their names to tribe names in the future… it’s a lot.

I also want to develop their culture, festivals, celebrations, traditions etc. I’d love for there to be a bonding ceremony, where couples exchange a gift, but I have no idea wat the gift would be. I’m also thinking of each elemental having a certain day dedicated to them, when their powers are strongest? Or maybe it’ll just be a celebration of their overall element like fire.

I’d also like to sort out the rankings a bit more. I like the names and titles associated with them, but I might make their meaning a bit clearer. Overall, though, I’m pretty happy with them. However, I have absolutely no clue what the territory looks like, aside from the cats being “hidden away in the mountains”. Is the mountain steep? Are there predators, pools, streams, flat surfaces, caves, or a hidden network of tunnels? Or maybe they live inside something resembling tents? Why are so many cats there, if the founder is three years old? They were at least a year old when they left for the mountains.

I’d love to develop so many things, but I can get distracted easily and will often go “oh that’s a great idea.” And never remember it or go “I’ll write that down later.” And later never comes.
