" The bond that
links your true
family is not one
of blood, but of
respect and joy
in each other's
life. Rarely do
members of one
family grow up
under the same
roof. "
" Friendship isn't about who you've
known the longest, it's about who
walked into your life, said
'I'm here for you.' Then proved it. "
Clancy is a quirky bean in his 40's. Playful, tactile and loyal. He loves using overly-complicated or just completely inaccurate, but similar-sounding, words to make his charge pause a second and figure out what he's actually saying. It's a distraction technique meant to keep Argus from spiraling too far and it never fails to bring a smile.
Clancy feels responsible for the young EOD he followed out of the desert; he's all but adopted the genius.
Clancy's always saying that it's his job to look out for Argus, to keep him safe. But he needs the kid just as much. Neither of them knew it at the time, and Clancy didn't put it together until months later, but that bomb nerd saved him just as much as he did Argus.
Argus is his compass, keeps him pointed in the right direction and gives him a reason to battle his darkness.
"A big part of my job is finding him puzzles hard enough
to take him out of his own head for a while."
Argus is a whip-smart and loyal bean in his early 20's. Always fidgeting, he loves to reshape paperclips. They're small and light, easy to carry. And fairly malleable. His quick brain often runs away with him.
Their relationship is not one that can be easily quantified. They are co-workers, partners that have been working together for more than seven years. But they're more than that -- they're best friends..brothers...family.
Argus has found something in Clancy that he didn't know he always needed. He depends on the older Bean more than he'll ever admit, even to himself.
Clancy is his keel, keeps him steady and from getting lost in his own head.
"Impossible is not a scientific term.
It's fun to do the impossible."

Clancy reached over and gently shook Argus' shoulder. "C'mon bud, wake up. We're here." When there was no response, Clancy shook him again a little harder.
The young bean shrugged his hand off and pressed closer to the door with a quiet grumble. He was usually a pretty light sleeper. The fact that he was out so soundly, and in a car no less, was a testament to how at ease he was. It was a nice change from the kid who was always on the move, always ready. They both needed this. To get away and just take a breath. Recenter.
Clancy chuckled softly at the kid's meager attempts to escape his rousing and nudged him again.
In a very childlike manner, Argus batted blindly at him.
"Hey!" Clancy protested playfully. "I'm
driving here!""Then drive." He grumbled. Then continued almost unintelligibly, "And let me sleep."
Argus peeled open one eye and peered out the window, watching the buildings on the edge of town zip by. "We're still five minutes out." He turned to shoot a mild glare at Clancy. "And your driveway is like ten minutes long."
"It is not!" Clancy shot back in mock offense.
Really, Argus wasn't
that far off. Clancy's family owned a huge ranch in Texas, still run by his grandparents, Beth and J.P.. And the house was set rather far back. But ten minuets was a bit of a stretch. Seven maybe.
With a halfhearted sarcastic hum, Argus settled back against the door.
"Hey now," Clancy shook his shoulder again, earning another groan. "Plenty of time to sleep later." He teased.
Argus barked out a laugh. "You're always getting on me to sleep. Now you're insistent on waking me up. Would you make up your mind?"
Clancy rolled his eyes, "That's cause you're a natural isomatic, kid."
"Insomniac." Argus corrected absently. "And I am not."
"And dozing in the car ain't sleep." Clancy continued with a shake of his head, completely ignoring Argus' protest. "You know if Nana sees you waking up as I park she'll insist you go sleep till dinner." He shrugged nonchalantly, "I figured you'd rather stick to your usual schedule of one a.m. but.." He trailed off with a playful casualness.
Argus huffed but shifted in the seat, sitting up straight and crossing his arms. Resolutely ignoring Clancy's triumphant smirk. Unable to sit still, it only took a couple moments before his knee started bouncing.
Clancy wordlessly dug into the center console and passed him a handful of paperclips.
"Thanks." Argus mumbled with the barest huff of a laugh.

"Clancy!" Beth, an older bean, came hurrying from the wraparound porch. She had long, graying hair, loosely tied back and wore a half-apron over the modest flower-print dress that brushed her ankles.
Clancy stepped out of the car and wrapped her in a hug. "Hey Nana."
She pulled back after a moment to look him over. "It's good to have you home." She said with a smile and tears in her eyes.
"It's good to be home." Clancy replied, giving her another squeeze before letting go.
Argus had climbed out of the car as well and now stood near the fender and watched the tender scene. He smiled when she turned to him.
"Come here," she said, opening her arms wide.
Argus ducked his head and obediently stepped into her embrace.
"I remember the first time Clancy brought you here. You practically hid behind him like a skittish colt."
Clancy tried and failed to stifle his chuckle and Argus glared at him over her shoulder.
"J.P. is on his way back from a rodeo in Dallas, should get in around dinner time." Beth informed them. "He'll be so happy to see you two."
She pulled back from the embrace and glanced between her visitors with a bright smile. "Why don't you boys get settled. I made fresh sweet tea this morning and I think the snickerdoodles are about done."
"Snickerdoodles?!" Clancy sounded affronted. "Where's the peach cobbler?"
His mother swatted his arm none-too-gently. "That's for dessert." She glanced back over at Argus, who had been hiding his smile by pulling their bags from the back seat. "And cherry pie too." She added.
Argus ducked his head again. "You didn't have to do that. I like the cobbler just fine." He mumbled.
"You think I'm just gonna make
Clancy's choice dessert? I have to spoil my favorite grandson too!"
This time Argus blushed and swallowed thickly, dropping his gaze. Even after years of being practically adopted by Clancy's family, he still didn't know what to do with all the affection. He was grateful when she didn't press him for a response. When he looked up, she was already headed back to the house and Clancy was coming back over with a smile.
The older bean wordlessly dropped an arm around his shoulders and gave him a gentle shake. Argus looked up to see warm eyes full of pride and affection. He wouldn't know, but it's the way he imagined a father would look at his child.
Eyes shining, Argus smiled back and went with him.

"Argus!" Clancy called from the door to the barn, not wanting to sneak up on the kid. "Where you at?"
There was no answer and he was about to turn and check elsewhere when a noise caught his attention. It sounded like something crashing. Clancy headed up to the loft, another clang and thunk greeted him as he reached the top of the stairs. He couldn't contain his chuckle at the sharp curse that followed.
"Hey now, what have I told you about swearing?" He called out teasingly, shaking his head at the scene before him.
The young genius was literally hip-deep in the guts of an industrial fan unit, his tail flicked to and fro, a tell of his deep concentration. Several tools and random bits of unidentifiable junk were littered across the surrounding floor. Clancy's jab must have startled Argus because he suddenly scrambled back, jerking harshly when he ran into something along the way.
"Wha-
Mmph! Ow!" Argus rubbed his head furiously as he emerged, sitting back on his heels.
Clancy winced in sympathy. "Sorry bud."
Argus glared at him, still rubbing his head. "What?" He prodded sharply, irritation spiking.
Clancy lifted his hands in surrender. "Nothin'. Just wanted to make sure you weren't gettin' lost in your own head up here." He dropped his hands and smirked mischievously, "Or fallin' asleep in a rat's nest of wires again."
Argus groaned and turned back to the fan, "That was one time, Clancy.
One time." He squinted, unable to resist restarting their discussion from the car, since his overwatch left a perfect opening. "I thought we were here to rest anyway? Isn't sleep a part of that?"
Clancy didn't rise to the bait. He simply shook his head.
"Sleeping and relaxing are two different things." He shot his charge a pointed look, "And work is neither."
"This," Argus swept a hand over the dismantled machine, "helps me relax."
Clancy gave a fond smile. "I know it does, kid."
They settled into a companionable silence, broken occasionally as Argus explained some aspect or another about what he was doing.
After about an hour, Clancy spoke up again. "I know it was a lot for you, when we first came out here." He huffed a laugh, "My family can be a bit much, especially with a history like yours. But you know these beans now. You can't stay in here tinkering away on that thing the whole trip."
"I know. I won't." Argus promised. "I'll finish up here and we can go for a trail ride if you want."
Clancy beamed at him. "You know I'd love that." He stood and took a step towards the ladder. "I'll go fetch Rocus and Willow. But you have to brush her down and tack up yourself."
Argus chuckled with a fond shake of his head, "Yeah, I know."
Clancy was always saying how important it was to spend that time with your mount, getting used to each other, bonding. Even if you've ridden together before. And really, Argus didn't mind. He wasn't nearly the horseman Clancy was, but he liked the routine of taking care of them.

After dinner, everyone settled around the porch, watching fireflies begin to compete with the stars and listening to the horses settle for the night, getting through their last bursts of energy as they jockeyed for the best spots in the paddocks.
"Who wants dessert?" Beth asked after the light had faded completely from the sky. She received several rounds of affirmatives and disappeared inside. Argus got up a second later to follow.
Clancy watched him go, pride swelling in his chest.
"I remember when he wouldn't leave your sight." J.P. said quietly after a moment. "Wouldn't really leave your
side if others were around."
Clancy nodded along.
"He's come a long way. You did good, kid." J.P. said with a clap to his shoulder.
Suddenly blinking back tears, Clancy opened his mouth but before he could respond, Argus and Beth returned, carrying a tray each. They passed out plates with large slices of pie and cobbler, glasses of milk and steaming mugs of coffee.
Clancy set his glass aside and skillfully scooped up his cobbler as if it were a slice of pizza, ignoring the way Argus chuckled at him.
"I still don't know how you even do that."
Clancy shrugged. "It's the only way to eat pie. Utensils are for the weak!" He took a big bite, somehow managing to not spill even a little.
Quiet chatter and soft laughter joined the melody of crickets in the cool of the night.
"Y'know," J.P. started around a partial mouthful, "that new Air and Space Museum in the next town over just opened." His tone was light and accompanied by a suggestive bob of his eyebrows.
Clancy's head shot up and his gaze darted to Argus', who chuckled quietly into his glass of milk.
"What do ya think, bud? Wanna check it out?"
"Yeah, sounds like fun." Argus agreed with a nod.

Argus had to smile as he and Clancy entered the museum. The older bean turned in a slow circle, gaze sweeping the room, clearly in awe of his surroundings.
That smile stayed in place as he listened to his overwatch ramble on about the different exhibits that they passed. Adding history and trivia after breezing through the informational plaques beside each aviation display.
Argus was listening, taking in the information and filing it away. But mostly he was focused on just the sound of Clancy's voice. The steady cadence as he talked about something he loved.
Argus loved museums. But that voice was far more relaxing than any field trip could ever be.
He was pulled from his lulled state when Clancy was suddenly gripping his shoulders, giving him a hearty shake and bouncing beside him.
"Ooh!! They've got simulators!"
Argus threw his head back and laughed at Clancy's antics. Watching as he practically ran over, barely skimming the stats of the plane it mimicked and instructions for use, before he scrambled in.
˗ˋˏ

ˎˊ˗
Argus rapped on the canopy of the simulator. ”I thought we came here to relax?” He said in his best imitation of an exaggerated Texan accent, a mischievous smirk pulling at his lips.
Clancy opened the hatch and grinned back, sweeping his hand over the cockpit. "This is relaxing." His smile faltered. "And I don't sound like that."
"Getting into a dog fight tens of thousands of feet in the air is anything but relaxing."
"Oh c'mon kid, cruising at 50,000 feet. Nothing but you and the jet-"
"And the guy trying to blow you out of the sky." Argus interrupted.
Clancy waved a hand dismissively, "Nah! That keeps things interesting!"
Argus scoffed.
"Hey, you wanna join me for a run? Be my copilot." Clancy bobbed his eyebrows enticingly.
"Uh, no. No, I'm good." Argus managed with a weak huff of a laugh. "You're not getting me in a plane unless it's end-of-the-world necessary."
"Oh come on! It's not a
real plane." He prodded. "Look, it's literally bolted down."
"I don't care. It's not happening." Argus returned stubbornly, crossing his arms.
In a very non-childlike and totally adult manner, Clancy stuck his tongue out at the younger bean. "Don't you have some science retrospective to go drool over or something?"
Despite his best efforts, a grin tugged at Argus' lips. His overwatch could always make him smile. "We're in an
air museum, Clancy. They don't have
science exhibits. Where'd you even- y'know what, nevermind." He chuckled in fond exasperation.
Clancy hummed quietly. The look in his eyes said he got away with something sneaky and knew it.
Argus bit his lip uneasily, then continued after a moment. "I do kind of want to see their space exhibit.." He offered quietly. "You don't mind if I..?"
Clancy gave him that gentle smile again. "'Course I don't, kid. We came here to relax and have fun. You don't have to just stand out there while I run a simulator over and over. Go enjoy your nerd-fest."
˗ˋˏ

ˎˊ˗
After a couple more runs, Clancy's focus started to wane. Knowing that Argus was no longer right outside, that he was somewhere else, on his own, had old instincts stirring up. The need to
protect.Clancy climbed back out of the cockpit and stretched. Stiff from being cramped in there for hours.
Though he could no longer really relax enough to enjoy the simulator, he wasn't worried. For all Clancy's fussing, Argus could take care of himself. And they were in a museum. Not an active war zone or anything. Clancy quickly pushed that thought aside before his memories could run away with him, and set out to find his charge.
He entertained a few more exhibits as he made his way through the building, but they weren't nearly as much fun without someone to share with. A smile spread across his face as he entered the wing dedicated to outer space. Just like the rest of the museum, it didn't disappoint.
After several minutes of meandering through the empty halls, Clancy finally found Argus in the hologram observatory. The room was pitch black to display constellations and nebulae. The kid was slumped in the far corner, the way he listed to the side told Clancy he was out like a light. A small pile of paperclip sculptures sat beside him and a partial-work was held loosely in still fingers.
Clancy chuckled softly to himself and settled beside his charge. "Hey lightweight, this little trip wear you out that much?" He murmured.
Argus hummed quietly and shifted, instinctively moving towards his guardian. He nuzzled closer when Clancy ruffled his messy hair.
"This place is pretty cool. Almost as good as the real thing, huh?" Clancy whispered as he stroked Argus' bangs absently. "Can't beat the ranch, though."
Sleeping outside under the stars at Clancy's family ranch in Texas was one of their favorite things whenever they got out there. The stars were practically non-existent in their hometown of LA, so it was a special treat.
Clancy draped his arm over Argus' shoulders, content to just sit with the kid until the museum closed.
