I've been looking on this thread for a while, reading stuff and I kept deciding whether I should post or not, but I think I should give it a try. I'm pretty impressed to see so many posts in such little time, I thought this thread was older.
When I started playing this game back in 2011, there weren't many games like this, so when I found it I was very invested in learning things and was especially impressed with the pets. i still remember I wanted to get my hands on a black advent so badly, I only got to acquire one many years later in 2018.
Time passed and obviously, there are better games and more diverse to choose from nowadays. Cs for me has become dull and it just isn't the same, it could also be that I grew up, but besides adopting and trading there aren't many things to do here, especially because I'm introverted and I don't post much on the forums, I like doing things on my own.
i agree it's pretty hard to trade for rarer pets nowadays, but not impossible. you have to invest time into learning and trading if you are after a pet that you want/dreamie. it did take me years and some of my dream pets I recently got only this year, but only because I didn't pay much attention to trading. the easiest way for me was to hunt for auctions and give quantity for rarer pets/ advents, from there I could go higher and get the desired pet in the end. i believe newer users decide to quit after a short time because the game itself is kinda hard to figure out at first. i remember when I joined I didn;t even knew what forums were, let alone learn the rarities of pets. i do think rarities should be changed also, there are just too many pets.
the reason I'm posting is that I'm an older user and I myself considered quitting multiple times. i did have people be mean to me by being sarcastic and stuff (on art forums a few years ago), I'm not talking about the staff here, but I did get a warning for having a swear word on one of the pictures I had on the trade description or something, which is understandable and it happened a while ago, it was my fault. i keep coming back to this site because it was and still is my comfort zone, my comfort game to come to and read forums and check art forums. i do want to move on with my life, but it's hard for me to quit forever since I have many memories here.
i'd love to see new things implemented, like if we could have the possibility to create custom items/pets. (through contests or if we could pay c$ to do so). i also like the idea of winning pets through contests if that could be implemented as someone said previously on the thread.

…instead, it would be easier to trade or at least understand the value of your omgsorare vs someone else’s omgsorare if there was a percentile or a number value. i’m not sure how that would work, but something like based on the number of users vs this pet, the drink me is for example in the 90th percentile for the omgsorare tier band. where as the ur pastel, which is still valuable, may be a little lower closer to let’s say the 30th percentile. again, i’m not sure the logistics. but allowing the user base to decide what values are given to pets trading wise has not only created a problem in terms of greed but also in terms of basic understanding.

this is an amazing idea, and everything you said was super well stated!! i think that this would really give everyone a better understanding of the rarity system in general and make it much easier for everyone, especially new players, to have fair trades.
the only thing that might become an issue is that exact percentages might cause people to get lost in the specifics (like not trading a pet in the 31st percentile for one in the 30th). however, something like separating the percentiles into 10 groups (like 10th, 20th, 30th, etc.) instead of doing the exact percent would easily fix this problem. it would even work with something smaller like 5 levels within a rarity category with 1 being the most common of the category and 5 being the rarest.
i don’t think that this would fix everything, especially because people could still get lost in the specifics (not trading a 10th percentile common for a 20th percentile common or something like that), but i really do think this could clarify a lot of trading issues that the CS community has in general
someone had a thread made for counting rarer pets or pets, in general, some time ago, but that thread has been inactive for a while. i think it takes some time to count all the existent of a specific pet.
this one I believethe thing is, the change isn't going to be easy, even if there will be new things, it will probably take some time, and people have their own lifes outside the site that they need to take care of first. allowing more coders to take care of the site and help besides nick would make a huge difference tho I think.
