Heartcatch - The Forgotten Library

Postby SonOfStarGod » Fri Feb 10, 2023 6:00 pm

After stumbling through a dense forest you find yourself at a tall brick building with a jutting tower, the door is slightly ajar. Pushing it open you nervously step inside.
“Whooo whoooo whooooo, welcome welcome please come in, I am Gerard, he/they, the owner of this little library. Unfortunately, this place has seen better days, but I’m trying to get this place up and running again,” You wipe off your feet on the entrance mat and step inside, the air is thick and musty, and rotting books line the shelves. This place needs a lot of work before it can open up again, but with hard work and determination you are sure that you can fix the place, and maybe attract some customers. If you complete all your tasks maybe a super unique customer will be impressed and come home with you!

Pokemon Used: Bob (DV#106), 808 (#404), Kairos (DV#300)
Prompt: 360 Words!
“Funding for repairs?”
The Eevee followed after his father figure, processing the words that had been transmitted to him. Whenever Bob took the opportunity to pull xer son aside for various reasons, the Espeon did xer best to be informative-- if not a bit concise. As Bob glanced back, xer singular eye narrowed. Did xe not make it clear enough?

“Loveletters can be exchanged for goods and services in this region, Kairoz. I thought it would only be fair to show you precisely how to raise funds, should I one day task you with it for our king’s coffers…while we help ascertain the repairs for these people’s work.”

“OOOOH. That. That makes sense!” Kairoz likely looked like a loon. Not a soul could hear the Espeon, save for him, and as such the outburst did draw wandering eyes as the two meandered down the road. “But why are we going this way?”

“You’ll see, you’ll see. Your… ‘other parental unit’… is at work…”
And as the two continued further down the road, it became VERY abundantly clear what Bob meant. The noise was overwhelmingly clear, even among the growing crowd.

“[A great deal] IS HERE FOR [A limited time]!! A DEAL OF A [[Long passage of time]]!! ACT NOW AND YOU CAN BE A [BIG] DEAL!! [[BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER.]] JUST GIVE ME [[Five easy payments of 19.99!!]] AND YOU CAN BE A [BIG SHOT]! THE [Talk of the Town] AND [[The Envy of Your Peers!] FOR [[Five easy payments of 19.99!!]] WE CAN FIX THE [[Storage of Books]]! “

As the noise continued to drone on and on, Bob gently moved people aside with xer psychic abilities. Xer expression seemed rather unamused at the growing pile of loveletters before the Riogon-Z. 808’s statics were incredibly annoying, jarring, and most importantly…effective, as much xe loathed to admit it.

“See kid? Spend a bit of time with 808. I…need to try and get this mess back to the library.”
Xe let out a silent exhale, This was going to be a very, VERY long ‘vacation’ with 808 and Kairoz for Bob…but at least they got to help out some locals.

I absolutely love snakes & dragons, and am always happy to receive them.
I'm also always happy to get new scenery items and King Costumes.

Pokemon Used: DV#400, OM#1545, DV#373 (latter being primarily a passing mention, though)
Prompt: (407 words according to the Google Doc I used as a scratch pad for this!)
“It’s a library, right?” Breakfast barked while looking up at Mr. Humphrey with a wide grin. “That means we can find books and artifacts there, right?”

Mr. Humphrey’s eyes narrowed slightly, but his mouth remained still.
The Crustle clicked out a reply, “That’s what Spoons said, yes. If we’re on good terms with that Noctowl and raise enough funding, then it’s possible for us to work our way into a more long-standing relationship in the future-”

“Oh, nice! Nice!” the Whispup chirped before sprinting away from the Crustle and towards the library building itself. Mr. Humphrey could only watch as Breakfast started to chirp loudly to the surrounding forest, “Love Letters! Love Letters! If you have Love Letters, I can give you some art! Like comics and those small portraits and-”

Breakfast was quickly interrupted by Mr. Humphrey putting a claw over his mouth. The Whispup’s ears flattened against his head, and he took a step back.

“What was that for?” Breakfast asked with a small frown.

“What do you think?”

Mr. Humphrey’s voice was harsher than before, as he almost seemed to glower at the younger Pokémon… Not that Breakfast could tell, because the Crustle’s mandibles remained as immobile as always.

Does he always need to be so crass about it?

Breakfast’s ears flattened slightly before he replied, “I don’t know,” with a roll of his shoulders. “Why be so tough? I was only asking a question.”

“Probably because I’m not in the kitchen,” the Crustle replied simply.

Oh. That makes sense.

Breakfast flattened his fur, then perked his tail to chirp, “Well, okay! Maybe if I offer, uh, commissions for my art, then we can get Love Letters for your kitchen too! Maybe we can do that after we raise those funds for the library- Maybe-” Breakfast’s voice started to get giddy, as he looked up at the Crustle with a bright grin and sparkling eyes. “- Maybe we can even get Gerard to agree to me painting something on the side of his library! As a token of gratitude for aaall the work that we’ve done for them! That’s going to be cool, right?”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself. You need to sell your art for the library first,” Mr. Humphrey huffed to Breakfast. While the Crustle’s face remained as blank as ever, the Whispup also noticed the slightest hint of mirth in the crab’s voice… And to the canine, that meant everything to him.

Pokemon Used: Kara Eric and Mark
Prompt: [Word count: 306]
When Kara, Eric, and Mark stumbled across the library in need of repairs, the trio immediately agreed to help out with fixing it up. Upon learning the library needed funding for the repairs, they decided to start a fundraiser. Not that any of the three had ever actually had any experience with participating in a fundraiser before, let alone running one, but nonetheless... They were determined to help out however they could regardless. Fortunately, the trio always seemed to make an excellent team, no matter what adventure they ended up embarking on, and things were no different now. Mark was the one who would get people's attention with all kinds of random- and occasionally very chaotic- stunts. Then, Kara and Eric would explain to anyone gathered about the library and how it needed repairs.
Currently, Mark was doing skateboard tricks with a skateboard he had borrowed from someone nearby. Despite clearly having no idea what he was doing, he was at least managing to stay on the skateboard and not get himself injured, and a lot of people who had been passing by had paused to watch. When he finished his impromptu show, Kara and Eric approached the group and explained about the library. Most offered a bit of spare cash to the trio before continuing on their way.
Then Mark started making balloon animals. It wasn't long before a bunch of people and Pokemon had surrounded him, making requests for different balloon animals. When he had finished making balloon animals for everyone, the trio told the group about the library, and several gave them small donations.
Eventually, Mark had run out of random ideas to draw attention to the three, and they headed back to the library with the funds they had collected. They hoped this would help Gerard purchase the supplies the library needed!
Despite everything,

Pokemon Used: Ghost
Prompt:

Money and materials to fix a couple of things shouldn't be hard to come by for a Ghost-type Litten. It seems that by scaring people, they can knock their wallets off. Well, it's not necessarily very legal, but who will notice that the money has been stolen? Person. So please don't share this message, or Ghost's plan will fail!
First, Ghost found the darkest corner he could find. Perfect, all he had to do was attract his victims. For that, nothing could be simpler, it was enough to attract them with illusions showing wandering souls. People always found it pretty and were always amazed by these little flying flames. Then, once the victim was trapped, all Ghost had to do was scare him so much that the person would drop money on the ground! Easy right? Yes, easy in theory, but not when in the end Ghost didn't get a penny back because no one dropped any money. Unfortunately, he was going to have to act more legally... This made Ghost sad. Legal work wasn't his thing. He found it too boring. But he had no choice, if he wanted to pass for the hero savior and giver of money. So he was forced to look for a job. Too bad for you little cat.
...
And here he is forced to sell fruit in a small local supermarket. Only the future will tell us if he will have enough customers to have a consistent and sufficient pay to help. But if he could already buy a few boards, it would be better than nothing!

Pokemon Used: Blush (DV280) and Carbii (OM1349)
Prompt: [261 words]

Blush was sitting somewhat dejectedly on the sidewalk, almost looking as if they were about to cry. They had been asking generous looking pokemon for donations for hours already but it seemed to be a lost cause. Even so, very weakly, they continued to speak to the crowds walking by every so often. "Donations? Donations for the written arts? Need donations for library repairs..." Carbii shook the small can next to them, making soft sad noises every time someone passed by.

After a while, Blush looked to the Rotomdex and sighed. "Maybe this was a thing of the past... I should have known better than to trust others' kindness..." Again, it looked as if they were going to start crying, but Carbii softly put a hand to their eyes and wiped away their tears. Blush smiled. "Thank you, Carbii. I know we shouldn't give up. We just need to find a new approach. Where would we fine pokemon passionate enough about reading and writing to donate to a library?" They asked aloud, Carbii responding with a picture of a familiar family of pokemon who took a picture with Carbii during the winter season.

"Carbii, you're a genius! Bootholemew and his family love to read, and are extremely well off! There's no doubt in my mind that they'll have money to spare for the library!" Blush didn't even wait before taking to the skies towards the polteageist's house, leaving Carbii to fly after them desperately- not exactly being as good of a flyer as they were- but he would catch up eventually.
"and I, as ever, am my own worst enemy."

Pokemon Used: Marston
Prompt:
(289 words)
Marston smirked, oh the library needed funds? Well, that would be no issue... Marston had plenty of gold bars that he could easily sell. Well, if he found the right buyer... the gold bars were stolen after all.... He sighed, heading back to his hideout. There he picked up two gold bars... anymore might pin him as the outlaw that he was. Marston could explain the two gold bars as a family heirloom and he just really needed the money at the moment.... But Marston knew that he couldn't sell it nearby... after all that would be too suspicious, plus other mons knew his face around these parts. He pocketed the gold bars and began to travel, he was no stranger to travel he moved hideouts often so it wasn't a problem for him. Marston knew he had to be quick though, so he only traveled a few towns out before finding a jewelry store that was manned by an old luxray... Perfect. Marston smirked, and went into the store. "Hello Sir... Can you take a look at my gold? I'm looking to sell it to help my son." Marston slapped the two gold bars on the table and the Luxray looked flummoxed. "....I won't even ask where you got this.... We're running low on gold..." The luxray sighed, and began evaluating the gold. "....5000 for the both of them?" The Luxray spat out. Marston smirked. "That would be perfect. Thank you." The old luxray wrote him a check. "Just bring it to the bank." The luxray coughed, putting the gold bars in the back. Marston nodded. "Thank you Sir." He replied, heading out of the store and back to the library... Bet the library would be funded now...

Pokemon Used: Cinnamon
Prompt: 352 Words
Cinnamon looked around the library that was in disrepair. Usually books weren't really her thing, but she didn't mind helping out those in need.

"If you need the money, darling, I'm more than willing to help out." she told the owl as she trotted alongside him. "I'm not much of a reader myself, but it would be an awful shame to see a library crumble." she said as she kicked up some dust while the two walked.

"I appreciate the help." Gerard nodded as they continued to walk. "We also need new books, and perhaps supplies." he ran a wing over a dusty shelf.

"Of course, of course!" the small fusion nodded. "I can supply anything you need. Just give me a list, and I'll get right to it!" she assured him.

The owl nodded and grabbed a piece of paper to write down some much needed things for the library. As Cinnamon looked it over, she nodded, giving some approving noises. She tucked the list away in her purse and gave Gerard a pat on his wing. She'd be right back with the things he needed. She bounded out of the library and straight for the city.

The money was the easy part. Cinnamon had plenty of money in the bank, more than she could ever use in her lifetime. So, she drew out some and stuffed it into her purse, before heading to a few bookstores. She wasn't exactly sure what books were needed, so she just took one from each genre. Of course, that's a lot to carry for a little sprigatito/fennekin fusion, so she had to have some help. Luckily, people usually did what she asked of them without thinking much about it, so she had a couple actor friends help her take everything back to the library in the woods.

"Gerard, darling! I brought you some gifts!" she called, taking the money out of her purse and setting it on the owl's desk.

"O-oh my, this is much more than I asked for....but thank you!"

Cinnamon's tail swished back and forth proudly. "Anything for a friend!"

Pokemon Used: Lucien OM#1283 + Oliver DV#262
Prompt:
"Tarot readings, huh?" Oliver sat back on the bench, tapping on of her fingers against it in thought. "Do you reckon it'll do well enough? We could always just play it safe and do a bake sale. You know the kids would love to help with it."

Lucien shrugged as he toyed with the pouch he carried around, pulling out his favorite deck. "Don't you think that it would get attention? Not many people resort to this for raising money." He drew a card and flashed it at his partner, a rare grin crossing his face. "See? Even the cards agree."

The Flareon snorted, nudging him with her elbow lightly. "Compromise; we do tarot and a bake sale. One comes free with the other and you know we have two eager to help 'mons at home."

He nodded as he put the card safely away.

- - -

Business was booming. There were lines of young Pokemon waiting to get a free cookie after paying for a reading from Lucien and Oliver was happily dishing out baked good after baked good. She enjoyed listening to the youngsters talking about what the cards said for them.

"It said that I am gonna get into the guild soon! We're gonna pass the entry exam, like I said!"

"Well, it told me that I'm gonna fall in love soon! That cute new Zorua has been giving me looks! I think I'm gonna ask them out on a date next week and see how it goes!"

She was happy to see how much the residents of her little town were enjoying their operation. No doubt they'd have all the letters they needed by the end of the day, if not more.

        Pokemon Used: Blain, Error, Jazz
        Prompt:

        [ 980 Words ]
        Code: Select all
"Needs funding for repairs?" Blain exclaimed, floating around Jazz and Error, "Why not scare trainers into giving you money?"
Jazz stared at Blain, somewhat in disbelief before shaking his head. The group stood outside of the library, Error had been examining it, silently plotting as he listened to the other two babble.
"We can't just scare people into giving us funding, Blain. That wouldn't do well for business here. People might think the place is haunted." Jazz sighed, "Maybe we can split up to find things? You and Error can find funding and I can find supplies? That might make things easier. I know a couple places. You and Error would most likely find funding better than I could."

"Sounds like a plan." Error stated simply. "I have a few ideas. Come on, Blain, let's get started.
        ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"I heard there's a competition of some sort happening nearby." Error hummed. Blain raised a brow, tilting his head slightly, "What kind of competition??" Blain began to float ahead of Error, turning around to float backwards, yet still facing the Ninetales to talk. "A pageant. One of those shows trainers put their pokemon through, with all the plucking and grooming to make them pretty." Error rolled his eyes. The Ninetales seemed.. On edge when it came to talking about Pageants. Blain noticed the change in Error, giving him a frown.
"Why are we going to a Pageant?"
"We need the money, don't we?"
Blain inhaled softly, giving a nod.

The duo had arrived at the building holding said pageant. The street was bustling. The lobby was just as busy. There were news outlets and also forms of talk show hosts galore. Error, of course, had disappeared from Blain's side. As Blain looked around, the ghost couldn't help but hide a bit behind other pokemon, or chairs. He wasn't the biggest fan of busy places.
He had to look for Error. Blain didn't have a clue where his friend had disappeared to, and he didn't like it. Blain eventually found himself in the theatre where the show was about to begin.
"Error??" Blain whined quietly. moving between the rows of seats. He was disturbing the patrons and it showed. He was made to sit down in the aisle by one of the staff working, making Blain pout. He didn't like being there, not alone, anyway.

The lights had dimmed and the music had begun. Blain looked toward the stage, somewhat listening to the announcers talk, introducing pokemon after pokemon. The Ghost's ears perked up as the announcers got to a mystery contestant.

"It seems as though we have a last minute entry." One of the announcers explained.
"We introduce to you; Ethereal. An Alolan Ninetales, Born and raised in the high-life, Ethereal lives for the adventure and beauty the universe has given him"

Blain stared in awe, speechless at what he was witnessing. That was his friend up on stage. But... Ethereal? He didn't know Error as 'Ethereal'. What a strange name. 'Maybe it's fake...'
He couldn't help but watch Error walk he stage to elegantly, keeping his head high. He wasn't wearing his mask and had looked like he was groomed up within the time he was away from Blain. He looked... Not like himself. Not how Blain knew him.

It wasn't until after the pageant Blain met up with Error again. Error had won, as he had planned all along. He had won a decent sum of money, enough for the repairs to be done.
"Let's get back to the library." Error stated, just as monotone as usual, as if he hadn't just pranced around looking pretty and elegant for 20 minutes.
Blain frowned, opening his mouth to ask questions, but Error very quickly stopped him, "Please don't bring any of this up to Jazz."
Blain just nodded, staying quiet after all.
        ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

While Error and Blain had gone off to do their own thing, Jazz was on his own.
The Flareon made his way into town, examining the streets before him. He had noticed a peculiar little book shop, one that seemed to be going out of business. Jazz frowned softly, heading into the shop. It was a little old lady who was running this shop, and was packing books into a box. Jazz hopped onto the counter to get her attention.
The woman gave a smile, patting Jazz on the head. Jazz pulled a small paper out of his bag, setting on the counter.
"The forgotten library?" The old lady nodded, "Do you want to take some books with you? I don't have much use for these anymore. I'm retiring, you see. Perhaps this forgotten library will have more use for them."
Jazz nodded, giving a chirp of excitement. The older lady gave the Flareon another smiling, packing away some books into a smaller box the poke on could carry. "You take good care of these, alright? I'm glad to see them getting a new life."
Jazz thanked the woman, heading off with the box.
On his adventure, Jazz managed to gather a few more things before deciding to head back to the library.
        ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As Jazz walked back toward the library, it seemed that Error and Blain had beat him there, first. Jazz set down the boxes of supplies, looking between Error and Blain. "Were you successful in getting funds?" Jazz tilted his head.
"Of course, did you have any doubt?" Error gave a chuckle, holding up a cheque. Jazz laughed, "Oh, awesome! I'm not going to ask where you got /that/ from. I assume it's legal."
The duo laughed. Blain just kind of stared, still holding onto the secrets of what he witnessed that day. He didn't understand why Error wanted to hide such a fact about himself, but it wasn't Blain's story to tell. For now, all they had to worry about was getting the library back in shape.
