The Cumberland Stock Pony is a relatively old North American breed, with the first crosses originating in the Appalachian Mountains in the years following the Civil War, when Narragansett Pacers and Norfolk Trotters imported to Tennessee were bred with the wild Chincoteague ponies off the barrier island of Assateague in Maryland and Virginia. Originally, these first crosses were only considered a "type" of horse, not a specific breed, and were bred to work as pit ponies in the coal mines of Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Sable Island Ponies, praised for their work in the coal mines in Nova Scotia, were later brought over and crossed with these first working horses to improve the breed. It wouldn't be until the turn of the twentieth century that the breed would be brought up from underneath the ground, when they were crossed with Morgan horses and Thoroughbreds, that their use outside of the mines would be noticed. These new crosses were seen as all-purpose horses, used for pulling coaches and as riding horses. They were also used as stock horse by local cattlemen, and were praised for their smooth gaits, stamina, and surefootedness. The Cumberland Pony was also increasingly used for sport, and found success in harness racing.

When World War I broke out, thousands of Cumberland Ponies were shipped to Europe to be used as cavalry mounts by the Allied Forces. Sadly, many of these horses would never return to their homes in the mountains, and the years following Armistice Day saw the numbers of ponies dwindling. In the forties, efforts were made to preserve the breed, using the semi-wild descendants of the few horses who returned to American shores following the war. During this time, the Quarter horse was growing in popularity, with the American Quarter Horse Association having been formed a few years prior. Both Quarter horses and the new Quarter Pony, developed from horses who did not meet the AQHA's original height standard of 14.2hh, were crossed with these descendants, thus creating the modern Cumberland Stock Pony. The Cumberland Stock Pony Society was begun in 1984. In the early days of the society, breeding was, for the most part, unofficially monitored, and included crosses from Appaloosas and Criollos. It wasn't until the early 2000s that the society began to limit its criteria for registration, and many of those crosses were deemed unsuitable. The society does still accept these crosses to be registered, but they must meet the highest standards in order to be considered, and thus, are not common.

Today, the Cumberland Stock Pony sees success in a variety of disciplines, and can be seen competing in both English and Western classes, including but not limited to cutting, western pleasure, working cow horse, dressage, and hunter jumping. Later crosses with Welsh Ponies and North American Sportponies have also found success in show jumping and cross country, those these are not as common. Outside of the show ring, many Cumberland Stock Ponies are used as trail horses and companions, and are praised for their steady natures, willingness, and loyalty. Cumberlands are also used as Pony Club and 4H mounts for youths throughout the country thanks to their quiet temperament and capability to perform a variety of disciplines. Cumberland Stock Ponies have been proven to be easy keepers, with most requiring little to no maintenance. In more recent years, there has been an increase in Cumberland Stock Ponies in therapeutic riding thanks to their calm demeanor. The Cumberland Stock Pony Society has become nationally recognized, and now holds several annual shows and offers incentives for breeders.

Cumberland Stock Pony Society ✦ adopt information

Postby bronc » Mon Feb 06, 2023 10:13 am

Image

The Cumberland Stock Pony Society has been formed by dedicated breeders with the intent to promote the breeding, training, and showing of the Cumberland Stock Pony. The society seeks to better the breed and offer incentives for owners and breeders. Membership with the CSPS can benefit owners in countless ways.

This adopt will be based upon a HARPG (Horse Art Role Playing Game) system, and will involve character development completed through art and writing. The mission is to create a fun and friendly community which celebrates the breed, where players can connect, form lasting bonds over a shared love of art and horses, and overall have fun creating and sharing art. The goal of this group is to prioritize development over collecting, quality over quantity, if you will. Of course, anyone is welcome to join, and if collecting better suits what a player is looking for, they are more than encouraged to do so. However, there will be innumerable benefits for those who choose to participate in the HARPG side of things and put in the time and effort to develop their characters.

Cumberland Stock Pony Society ✦ breed standards

Postby bronc » Mon Feb 06, 2023 10:15 am

Image

Height: The accepted and ideal Cumberland Stock Pony height is 12hh to 14.2hh. Ponies outside this height can still be accepted, but would not be seen as desirable for breeding, and thus, their breed score will reflect this.

Accepted colors: Cumberlands are most commonly seen in black, bay, and gray, though brown and chestnut ponies are still common. Due to the crossbreeding during the early development of the breed, paint and appaloosa markings are present, but are few and far between, and are strictly monitored. Solid coats make up the majority of ponies.

Included bases + dilutions: black, agouti (all modifiers), chestnut, silver, cream (hetero + homo), pearl, dun, champagne, pangare, sooty, grey.
Included white markings tobiano, splash, overo, sabino, rabicano, roan, birdcatcher spots, appaloosa, manchado
Unseen colors: mushroom, dominant white

White rule: Cumberland Stock Ponies should not have white markings for more than 25% of the pony's body. Roan is not included in this rule.
While Cumberland Stock Ponies are allowed to show excessive white, this will play a roll in the breed score.

Cumberland Stock Pony Society ✦ skill sets

Postby bronc » Mon Feb 06, 2023 10:15 am

Image

Each Cumberland Stock Pony is born with an innate set of skills. These can be improved over time through training, showing, breeding, and the use of items. Each set is measured to 100. The range for standard free adopts and myo's is between 1 and 10. Imports will have a slightly higher range, between 1 and 20.

The skills are as follows:

Balance
Collection
Courage
Cow Sense
Impulsion
Intelligence
Mind
Power
Precision
Scope
Speed
Sprint
Stamina
Suppleness
Willingness

There are several ways that skills may be increased. The most common methods are through training and competing with your pony.

Certain disciplines require certain skills, meaning ponies will be preternaturally good in some disciplines, and not as suited for others. The way you train your pony is up to you.

Disciplines and their skill requirements include:

Western.
Breakaway roping: Sprint, intelligence, power, willingness
Cutting: Cow sense, balance, speed, stamina
Pole bending: Balance, precision, speed, sprint
Ranch riding: Balance, collection, intelligence, stamina
Reining: Balance, power, speed, willingness
Team penning: Cow sense, power, speed, willingness
Trail class: collection, intelligence, mind, willingness
Versatility ranch horse: collection, cow sense, precision, stamina
Western dressage: Balance, collection, impulsion, willingness
Western pleasure: Collection, mind, precision, stamina
Working cow horse: Courage, cow sense, power, speed

English.
Cross country: Courage, scope, speed, stamina
Dressage: Collection, impulsion, stamina, suppleness
English pleasure: Balance, collection, mind, willingness
Hunter jumping: Balance, collection, scope, suppleness
Show jumping: Courage, power, scope, speed
Three day eventing: Courage, collection, scope, stamina

Have an idea for a discipline and don't see it listed here? PM me, I'd love to hear your idea!

Gelding bonus: Gelding a stallion offers a bonus for that pony's skill sets; each gelded horse gains a bonus of +10 points in each skill. This means a maxed-out gelding can have a total of 110 points in each skill, as opposed to 100. However, gelded ponies can no longer breed.

Things are still a work in progress, but we now have the outline of the breed standard and skill system in place. Breeding, training, showing, and trail rides will be closed for a little while longer while I finish setting things up, as will MYO's, but I thought I would go ahead and open up starter imports to kick things off! Please read the entire post before ordering, to avoid your order being ignored.

    Rules:
one. You may only request two starter imports, one mare, one stallion. If you do not like your imports, you may trade or gift them out, but you cannot have another starter made outside of these two.
two. After the creation of your imports, you must register your stable within one month, or your imports will be readopted ignore until the registry is finished c:
three. You may not request changes to finished starter imports
four. You may choose the base (black, bay, chestnut, brown) as well as one of the following dilutions or markings:
cream (single copy), silver, champagne, dun, pangare, gray, tobiano, splash, overo, roan for one of your imports. The other will be randomized. You may also choose to leave this blank for both imports to be randomized.
five. You may choose one discipline for your import. This will affect their skill sets; they will have an innate bonus in the four skills required for your chosen discipline.
six. Please be patient when it comes to imports
seven. If your order does not follow these rules, I will let you know, and you will have the opportunity to correct it
