Liminal Spaces: the path between past and future

Postby rileypillow » Thu Nov 03, 2022 3:33 am

I haven't seen a thread for this anywhere, please point me if there is an existing one!

This is a discussion about liminal spaces, which recently became popular online.
For those who don't know, a liminal space is a transitional space, most often represented by an empty corridor or mall. Liminal spaces can evoke feelings of nostalgia, calmness or fear due to their resemblance to everyday places and their strange, eerie atmosphere. A liminal space could be a corridor, a road, the gate to heaven, a pathway, The Backrooms, etc. (more examples in these photos), usually empty of people or objects and fairly generic to make them seem more familiar.

I didn't realise that other people are as interested in them as I am! Sometimes I’d be walking down a corridor and have a sense of déjà vu and transition, and would stop and lose myself in that brief feeling. Or, I'd see a path and feel comforted by its familiarity. Now I don't feel so strange any more xD

Please keep this discussion on topic. An empty, nostalgic location may not fall into the category of a liminal space if it isn't transitional. I don't want this to get locked if it simply becomes a discussion of nostalgic locations. You may also share images and photos.

The indoor ones creep me out a bit, though if there are plants it doesn't bother me as much. Greenery is really a calming element. I've seen PC games featuring a significant amount of liminal spaces, including one just called Liminal. The Stanley Parable is another.

I have ALWAYS adored liminal spaces. I stumbled across them when I was on YouTube sometime in October of 2020, and I found a video about the Backrooms. I immediately was intrigued, learning more and more about them, falling head over heels over the idea of the Backrooms, and liminal spaces naturally. They have been a special interest and hyperfixation of mine ever since. They're so beautiful to me, and I relate to them in a lot of ways. It brings me joy to see that liminal spaces are still the core of many people's hearts. They make me feel like home in ways that I can't entirely put into words. I have a Pinterest board if anyone is interested in seeing! It's a mess and is still in the process of being sorted into sections, but I'd be happy to share nonetheless!! I would love to talk to someone about liminal spaces, someone who just gets me in terms of the love I feel for liminality, and everything surrounding it!!

Come on, come on now, you know that it's time to emerge. So go ahead and wrap your arms around me." - "Emergence" Sleep Token

I seek "comfort" in what others find "creepy."
EchoDragon555 is my boyfriend, there is going to be "unfair" trades between us, as we help each other catch up on our wishlists, and provide gifts for each other. nostalgiaprincess is my sister, although she is heavily inactive.
Hoarding defeats the purpose of this site, and should logically go against the rules regarding "fairness."

I have a hyperfixation on these and go through VR to try and find one to chill in that isn’t the Backrooms usually. Love the Backrooms but they’re easy worlds to find
