Who/what do they protect?
Their handlers are a couple of researchers in a facility by the name of Lumizite. Lumizite is designated for rescuing and raising endangered cave creatures called Erpons (my own Species lol) while Luz is a huge help in both protecting and finding these rescues. Luz themselves go into the actual caves with their humans to find these docile and afraid creatures. younger Erpons do not have good vision, while Luz seems to mimic an adult Erpon's spikes, ears, and a dark to a light scheme of color. Rescues are made quite easy.

When off the job, Luz is the well-known security. Nothing bad gets in, and no one gets out. The facility is quite small, as hardly anyone knows of Erpons’ existence (anymore. Thanks to humans for being regularly terrible and the already low rate of children in Erpons) it was quite easy for everyone to get to know the tracker.

Riker was picked up by a star ship captain who already owned a previous Tracker Dog named Azazel, he saw how ingenious and intelligent his companion was and thought that Azazel would appreciate a companion. Along with his ship being rebuilt, this Tracker would be patrolling the ship along side Azazel to root out stowaways, intruders, and various other threats. However Riker is primarily in charge of the brig and keeping order. They can operate with very little instruction and their Captain has given permission to act on their own accord.
(After five years in space the ship crashes on a new planet filled with unknown danger. Azazel and Riker take more responsibility and guard the last 23 survivors until rescue arrives)
