I won't be getting a skelebun, just like I won't be getting a rainbow smoothie, a DIY cake set, a TD Moonswirl or that custom pet rock that was once in the pound. That's just how things are, sadly we can't all get everything.

Custom pets are not part of the issue. They are a unique perk that don't count towards collection completion, and as such don't contribute to the demand/inflation issue. They don't have rarities.

I don't feel that simply just accepting the insane value inflation is healthy for the long term health of the site. That's what we've been doing. For years. The things you mentioned never used to be this difficult to get. Skelebuns are now impossible to get or find. Extremely limited items like the DIY cake set and rainbow smoothie are basically nonexistent now with the lack of player retention. True dates are an entirely different debate, but they have a similar 'rarity scaling' like the limited items as they'll never be released with those dates again.

The trading and value economy is unsustainable as it is now. Economies like this break and ruin games with player based trading, like with Neopets, or the many Roblox games. CS is already heading that way, and without adjustment and without an influx of returning or new players, it will continue to inflate to even more insane amounts, or crash entirely.

Bilaz wrote:However, I think one of the main issues on the site currently is the massive massive gap between current pets and old ones. The non stores I mean, all the free pets. I think the current adoptable pets are just seen as, well, not very useful fodder? A set to complete? Nobody is discussing the individual pets anymore, and the current pets are no longer interesting. Yet, whenever something really rare suddenly pops up the site goes wild, like the gold gacha dog. Am I saying every litter should have a really rare outcome? No, I think that would do the economy more harm than good. However, I do think there's an in between road to go.

Ever wondered why the old advent T7s were worth so much more than the other advent 2008 pets? It's because of how they were released. It was a very large litter, and you could only adopt 2 of them, on several different dates. I notice that these moderately limited pet seem to have a lot of appeal, another good example would be the new years dogs. They're released in a limited manner, but not crazy limited. People have fun swapping for the other outcome if they missed it, and I always get people offering on mine even months later.

So here's my proposal: create more interest in individual pets again! I saw several suggestions for daily log in rewards, well how about something like this. Every month one large litter is released in an 'adopt one a day' format. They'll all be equally rare, so even if you don't have time to adopt every single day you will still get something of moderate value. Only getting one at a time might give the individual pet more of a spotlight too! Rather than a whole bulk of newborns to wait for.

Just an idea :)

I'm still against daily log in rewards in general - they tend to ruin the casual atmosphere of a game, and encourage an addictive play style that isn't healthy for younger audiences. However, I think you bring up a really good point here with the smaller litter sizes and multiple outcomes. Maybe releasing batches with smaller adopt numbers to encourage trading could be a potential idea? It wouldn't have to be every batch is smaller and limited in numbers, but having one or two with limited adopt numbers could be something to try.

Just a quick reply to thank the author of this thread, it has certainly done its job and has made me more proactive in trading, gifting and commenting on various threads.

I have enjoyed listening to all of the comments thus far, I have also given up holding onto pets that have no emotional tether to me.

In future .. I aim to continue to give back to the CS community and help others when I can, where possible.

I have actually expanded my trading ... therefore gaining more experience in the differing values of pets as well as meeting new friends and am constantly enjoying the comments on my gifts to others.

I dont think the site is dying, in fact I so believe that anyone who cares and can spread some happiness will continue to increase friendship and chatter exponentially within this wonderful site.

Leave cs as is and take it upon yourself to interact more in an ever decreasing unconnected world where we dont speak, but at least can continue to contact each other and make a little spark in someones darkness.

Thank you again, stop moaning and make a change! Lol

I'm sure this has already been said, but I wanted to share my experience.

Discord Prevalance

I've been on CS since 09 and have always enjoyed interacting with the community. What has come up time and again, which wasn't a thing a few years ago, is Discord. You can't go to a topic or Closed Species without a link to a discord group. That's fine for others but for me I came to interact on the CS boards, it's where I have always chatted with members. I've noticed since the prevalence of Discord the actual forums are a ghost town. Half the time instead of a fanclub on the CS board the fanclub is in Discord. Those users who would be messaging in the forums are offsite. It also creates a weird dynamic where I miss out if I am not active in Discord. I still am stubbornly resisting, I have even asked where is the fanclub in the boards and been met with "there's a Discord." Topics that seem dead to me probably aren't if I followed the link offsite. I definitely get it since Discord has so many features CS doesn't when it comes to chatting and notifications. However, someone else said it best, CS is a laid back experience. I personally can't do Discord because the notification and the alerts to content I haven't seen trigger my anxiety. I don't know how this issue would be resolved, maybe it's just a sign of the times. Still, I have to wonder how the community is shaped if they are talking offsite where rules do not align with CS's. Could that be where the negativity is being fueled? I don't know I'm not on Discord.

I want to end of a happier note since I really love this site. There have been some moves that have boosted morale. First, the addition of the snake species. Not only are they gorgeous lines but the designs on them have been playful and thoughtful. I can tell the staff designing them have inspiration, we needed this. Secondly, the last summer event was a blast. It felt like a celebration of the site.

If you ask me CS needs to invest in itself. That rare time they had a merch shop sold out within hours! If they brought back physical merch we would all gobble it up. Bring some hype for what's already been created here!

-snip-

many people don't use forums anymore, it's always social media or discord, a very sad development, as i'm also feeling better on forums. forums are an archive which creates itself and have more personality than most social media. at least one could say that discord is relatively similar to how ICQ was back then, but it's used much differently.... back then ICQ was more a "side thing" for people to chat privately outside of forums, while nowadays with discord this kind of program is used more and more to REPLACE forums.

this isn't really helpful and not a suggestion either, since we can't "force" people to post in forums, but it's still an observation and it's not limited to CS. a lot of forums are super dead nowadays, and many don't even exist anymore or are just corpses where nobody posted since years.

Forums in general are a dying breed, this is not a CS-exclusive issue. It's not a new thing for forums either - before Discord it was Skype or Teamspeak or other similar alternatives. Additionally it's been officially stated that all Discords publically linked on site MUST follow CS rules, so I don't think blaming them for 'fueling the negativity due to not following on-site rules' is a fair assumption at all.

I'm a pretty avid CS Discord user and being 100% real I would've quit the site again if it wasn't for the Discords. The kind of chatter and casual discussion that goes on there just... isn't suitable for the forum format which favors more slow-paced discussion with longer posts. Nothing wrong with either and neither is superior over the other and I totally get why Discord isn't everyone's cup of tea, this post isn't trying to convince anyone to use it! Just wanted to interject a bit because the Discords in general get a pretty bad rep here :]

i know a lot of people on this thread are against the idea of dailies, but this really doesnt seem any different than the advent calendar, just with fewer pets given out each day. it would encourage trading too! i support this idea, it sounds fun, whether it be monthly or just a mini event :D
i don't use cs much anymore. number 1 N Harmonia lover‼️‼️

because ive been lurking - the adopt one a day format seems pretty fun! it makes trading much more enjoyable as people can trade for days theyve missed with other people who missed different days. though i couldnt really imagine this being a thing every month, every other month or every 2 months might be easier on artists? i dunno, im rambling and im bad at words ive been up since 3am lol

I think the daily adopts are a good idea! I don’t think it being a monthly thing would be a good idea since I assume CS staff are already busy with other aspects of the site but I do like the idea of it, it also may be a good way to introduce more species/styles of pets? Just a small little bundle of pets every few months that introduce a new lineart which then become integrated with the regular monthly adopts or something along the lines of that !

I’m a new player and am very surprised with how active this site still is considering how long it’s been around. Web/Forum based games have already had their hayday, they’re naturally going to decline in popularity.
Jumping into any community like this is always overwhelming tho 😅 It wouldn’t be fun for a completionist, you’re not catching them all without being an OG player, but achievable goals are still achievable! I’ve almost finished my Syrian collection in just a few months of playing :)
