not to discredit the honestly truthful statement that offsite discussion hubs like discord take away from on site activity, but even my offsite cs related discords have been slow lately. anything cs related feels.... stagnant.

there's a lot of reasons for the general downtrend of activity on this site, and a lot of them have been discussed and debated on this thread, other threads like it, and for years since the decline started. Some aspects could have certainly been addressed - some have, minorly - but most haven't. Others aren't fixable, at least not without driving some players away.

Trading and inflationary pet values, for example. Store pets absolutely need to be re-released. 12 nons for one pet is ridiculous. That's not going to get better. They're not going to be any easier to get in two or three years either. For any new player they're completely out of reach unless they have off site trades, art, or other means of trading. Even for older players pets like the skelebun, cerbs, are ridiculously difficult to get. And why? What's the purpose of not re-releasing them at this point? Its not driving site activity by having them so absurdly rare, clearly, and having such inflated hyper-rares has brought other games the same issue. And every year the pets that would have been similar in value, like the moonpups or sunpups, are re-released, only furthering that value divide.

On the note of inflation, c$ is insane. There's no good money sink on site, although the monthly and bi-monthly item packs seem to have been attempt to address that and I can appreciate that. We really need some significant to take some of the c$ out of the on-site economy though, or at least balance it out a little more. Maybe purchasable forum vistas, profile colors, or something similiar that doesnt contribute to the pet and item rarity issues while offering some sort of on-site boon.

Which brings me to point three - site features and general staff activity. The site hasnt gained significant new features in what feels like ages. Oekaki is outdated and feels like its struggling to be relevant. The Oekaki wiki hasn't been updated since like 2014 or something. The forums are a relic from the 2010s, and there hasn't been anything shiny added to them that I can remember. If you look at other pet sites, theres more customization and personalization. CS doesn't really have that. The last update I remember - separating out the forums and reorganizing things like the rp and oekaki forums - felt like decisive ideas that still from time to time I hear people mention. I feel like there have been updates and changes lately that haven't been too popular - like the DNI list update, or some of the rules changes and how staff choose to or choose not to enforce them. All of this just drives away players. Whether its the hostility they see between players over the updates, the updates themselves, or how they perceive staff's handling of the situations.

Also, we need more active, engaged staff. And at least another programmer, if even only for new features. This site is massive, was massive, and there's no healthy way one person can manage it all themselves in terms of coding, updates, back end related stuff, etc. A lot of the lack of activity stems, I feel anyways, from the site's overall stagnation and inability to update and develop further.

In my own opinion (just mine, not the opinion of CS as a whole): I'm not an artist, but I've noticed with the pets/items that I've made that in recent years sometimes nobody will post anything at all. I've definitely found it disheartening for my stuff to go up and see zero posts. I'm aware that people are often just posting a quick "I like this!" in discord, but it may help to know that from my perspective, if it's not on CS I never see it! I think it's quite easy to forget that all the content for the site is made by real people who probably do like to see what others think of it.

I love your pets, I totally understand how you feel about not feel love for the work you've done <3 but we do love your pets

I think the community needs the most work. The site is very aggressive towards new users and even after a year of being on the site and the only thing I've managed to do is anger other users over specific site things that I don't understand yet and probably never will fully grasp as cs isn't something I can pour hours into. One of my Irl friends had an account, but quit for similar reasons In stated above. As someone who tried to share the site with friends it's really upsetting to see people take their aggression out on people I introduced almost right away over things that would have been fixed if a quick link to rules or guide was dropped. It's not the whole site, but i do think there is way more aggression than there needs to be. It's not possible to erase it all, but its a pretty big issue for the site is this is waht new users are introduced to.

There is a lot of aggression that is not necessary, i was met with a lot of kindness at the start but i am beginning to get a lot more negativity as time goes on, i have also thought recently of quitting because not only can i not complete a single collection of pets, but people dont listen to rules even after rewrriting it for the hundreth time, and people are plain rude when it comes to asking about trades or worths in messages, they either ignore it or they give back some aggression.
I wish/hope that there can be more respect and positivity in the coming years on this site esspecially for the new.
perhaps there could be some announcement about it so users feel more welcome or comfortable to stay in any case? i am unsure.
i really believe there will be more quitting though with this noted.
The site itself also used to have a whole tone of activity when i first joined up until now where barely anything is happening, it does become boring - i still think minigames are a great way for that activity to fly up.

This topic was linked to me just about an hour ago so I'm pretty late coming in but I did read the whole thing haha so I wanted to go ahead and mark it bc I'm interested in reading more thoughts on the topic. I've also seen several threads like this pop up / then die down again later, so I understand why there's been mentions of this being repetitive, but I don't really see it that way. Sometimes conversations do benefit from being revisited more than once.

I completely support and am invested in everyone's attempts to address trading issues, because y'all are right, that is the "core" mechanism of the site and it does have several major problems that would deeply benefit from being reworked or updated or addressed in another manner. I would like to tentatively put the idea out there that it might also be quite helpful to address some of the bigger problems with oekaki? I do think it's likely that oekaki has significantly contributed to keeping the site afloat, and I really believe quite strongly that if there were a way for the art community to thrive both inside and outside of closed species, there could be more activity and livelihood on that side of the site.

I desperately wish there were a way for people to filter the posts they see from artists. ;u; Many artists, myself included, get a lot of enjoyment from participating in closed species on oekaki. but this inevitably alienates people who follow us for other types of art, like OC art, abstract art, or anything of the like. the oekaki boards are already conveniently divided up into several categories ("human/humanoid," "animals/creatures," etc) and "closed species" already have their own oekaki sub-forum ("Adoptables 2: Closed Species/Communities.") I think it would be so incredibly helpful and constructive if there were an option to "pick" which boards you would like from a certain artist in your oekaki feed. I think there's so much potential to build communities around different boards of art since they're divided up that way already.

I have a suggestion topic running on this under the suggestions board: xxx. although I have to say, as I've seen others mention on this topic, it can be crushing to see suggestions get dozens and dozens of support votes and tons of discussion, and never know ever if a staff member has even seen it. having suggestions rot forever is extremely disheartening. to speak to the point of more staff communication to the user base - maybe having more moderators be able to communicate with nick about things he does or does not think are possible or worthwhile suggestions and then communicate that back to the users would be a helpful starting place.

I agree that it seems like more development on the back-end of things may benefit the site and its userbase - but that's coming from the user side of things, so I can't be sure. I think I can speak for all of us that we're very thankful for Nick and his hard work for building and continuing to maintain the website, but I can't help but wonder what it's like for him to be the only one doing managing this passion project construction-wise for over 15 years. I know for me, personally, sometimes I get tired, sometimes I get bored, sometimes I am still kicking but I just find it hard to verbalize what it is I'm doing behind-the-scenes - I sometimes worry about Nick and his ability to keep up - and I don't mean this as a negative thing, please don't take it that way! But we're all human and interests ebb and flow, understandably so.

I wonder if additional site management (as in, coders and bug-fixers and suggestion-implementers and beta testers) for updating the site and, possibly in the future, adding new features would help keep a stable userbase. Personally, I look forward to finding all the little tid-bits that get added to the site every-so-often, I look forward to the mid-month update every month, and I would use the site more often if more features were more consistently being toggled with, altered, or added. I'd be drawn to the site more if I had the excitement of expecting something, other than monthly pet drops. I think that's part of the appeal of events, at least for me - there's something to expect.

Coming from someone who is on the CSTM discord, we do talk about the latest outcomes and whatnot, however, there's lots more chatter that wouldn't quite be alright here in the forums. Chatter back and forth on the forums just causes spam vs. on the Discord, it's encouraged.

I will keep this in mind though! I will try to remember to engage in the monthly outcomes threads and whatnot much more, I tend to forget to come on here and talk about CS. I just enjoy the discord more because responses are much faster and I enjoy chattering more.

I just wanted to come back after a few days of trading to say that the trading partner pool is like, incredibly small??? Depending on the time of day, every day its the same 5-6 people that bump their trading threads. The new threads activity side bar used to be oversaturated with trading threads and you could refresh not even a second after and miss like 20 bumps skipped because so many people were active. Now youre lucky if you see 3 new trade threads per refresh and if it changed completely instead of still having some threads in it that you already saw before the refresh
(I am not complaining about trades or traders, just stating the sad fact that inactivity of userbase has also diminished trade opportunities)
I dare you to click on this link...

Seconding this, it's become incredibly hard to complete my goals because of this, and I'm sure plenty of others agree. I don't like Discord's interface at all, hence why I don't use it, but if that's where everyone is trading nowadays then I'm out of luck until I suck it up LOL

Just popping in to mention, CS did do merch once, and it was delightful and I wish they would do it again! Came across these guys while looking for thumbtacks earlier and I remembered someone had commented about it. I would absolutely love it if there was another merch campaign, especially if it was directly related to funding some kind of big site upgrade/overhaul. I'm picturing more sticker packs, tshirts/hoodies, maybe even plushies of some sort? Those smoothie cup pets from the cyber event would make excellent mallow toys. This site could certainly benefit from a bit of branding and it would be an awesome way to reconnect with the community
