Deep down Marsh always knew he was a cowboy, but he finally felt like he really was one when he was gifted his first cowboy hat!

(TL;DR: Marsh saves some viper raider kits from a coyote and is offered a place in the clan, allowing him to live out his dream of being a cowboy <3)
[904 words]Since the day he was born, Marsh knew he was destined to become a cowboy. He dreamt of traveling the country with a close group of clanmates- ride or dies who would do anything for each other. However, Marsh felt like he lived a world away from his dream, being a simple barn cat on a ranch owned by humans. Don't get it wrong, he liked his life, but just felt like there was something else out there that was calling to him.
Marsh was roaming the human town near the ranch, listening to idle gossip from the towncats and catching a few rats while he was at it. The sun was setting and the air grew crisp as he padded back home, a large rat in his jaws. He walked down the same path he walked everyday back home, but something felt wrong. He turned his head, sniffing the air. He picked up the scent of something else- something that sent off little alarm bells in his brain. Cautiously, he set his rat down and retraced his steps, trying to pick up the scent. There, he thought, turning into the woods.
The stench was stronger now, and growing stronger by the second. Then he heard it- the fearful cries of kits. He rushed blindly towards the noise, not noticing what the strange scent was before it was too late. Marsh was face to face with a coyote, it's narrow snout seconds away from snapping at one of the kits. Marsh- in either a moment of bravery or simple fear, lunges onto the back of the coyote, digging his claws into it's dusty grey pelt.
The canine yelps out and twists around, blindly swatting it's paws. Marsh flies off the back of it, digging his claws into the ground, trying to regain his balance. The coyote snarls and approaches Marsh, suddenly lunging at the cat. Marsh braces himself in fear, but a mysterious figure bursts from the undergrowth and tackles the coyote, hurling it off course and into a tree. Four more figures burst from the brush, backing up their mysterious companion.
Marsh runs towards where he last saw the kits and spots them all- surprisingly safe and sound. He lays down and huddles close to them, worriedly watching the direction where the group of mystery figures were fighting off the coyote.
After a few long moments, two of the cats walk through the undergrowth, covered in small scratches and nicks. A cream colored molly and a large fluffy tom the color of sand. ``Awfully brave of you to do that``, Marsh says quietly, his voice warbling with anxiety. ``Ah, it's nothing. You were pretty brave back there too``, the cream molly says in a gruff southern tone. The large tom approached Marsh, inspecting the kits. ``They're all here Adderfang``, he says in a deep, raspy voice. He picks one up by the scruff. Adderfang does the same, and motions for Marsh to pick up the last one.
``So, what happened to the rest of your group?``, Marsh says, his voice muffled by the kit he was carrying. ``Chased off the coyote, made sure it won't come back. They should be back at camp by now``, the large tom says. Marsh perks up. ``Did you say camp? There's more of you?`` Adderfang laughs. ``Well sure there is. There's not many of us, but we make do. And hopefully we won't need help from Kittypets again``, she snorts. Even though he didn't know what it meant, Marsh still felt dejected at Adderfang's remark. ``Aw, she didn't mean it. Adderfang is just mad that someone else found the kits first. Thank you for keeping them safe, the Viper Raiders won't forget this``.
The trio make it to the camp that Adderfang was talking about. Marsh was so shocked to see such a large gathering of cats, all busy at work. A black and white cat quickly approached the three. ``Gilabite, Adderfang, thank you for getting the kits back. And who is this?``, he asks, squinting his eyes at Marsh. ``Kittypet``, Adderfang spits as she walks away, setting the kit down and leading it somewhere. Gilabite puts down his kit and Marsh does the same, watching the three small cats stumble after the molly.
The black and white cat opens their mouth but Marsh stops them. ``I'm Marsh, and I just wanted to help``, he says sheepishly. ``He did good today Blackstar, Adderfang is just mad``, Gilabite says calmly. Blackstar eyes Marsh and turns to Gilabite. ``Make sure everyone is okay, I'll speak with him. Son, follow me to my den``, he finishes, turning and walking briskly to tree stump in the middle of the camp. The two dip inside the stump, revealing a large dug out den underneath it. It had a large nest lined with moss and feathers, and small human trinkets hanging from the exposed roots of the stump.
``It was quite brave there, what you did there son. I respect that- helping out some folks you hardly know``, Blackstar says, his voice rumbling and low. ``Marsh, if you ever find yourself in a spot of trouble or need a place to stay, you know where to find us, okay? It's not glamourous, and it'll be worse than where ever you are now, but you will always have somewhere, don't you forget that now. I know we won't forget what you did for us``.
