Beaumont Collie Visual Marking Guide: Colours

Collie colours are decided by the B, D, and C Locus.
There are two types of colours: eumelanin (base colour) and phaeomelanin (red colour).
Markings decide where on the dog the eumelanin base and phaeomelanin red present.
There are a lot of different shades of each colour, and phaeomelanin red especially can have some overlap, such as the darkest tan looking the same as the lightest red.

C Locus

The gene determining what colour the phaeomelanin red is.
There are 3 genes, C, cch, and ce. While they don't mean much alone,
they pair up (as all loci are made up of two allels) to create the 6 known c colours.


CC- Dark Red
Ccch- Red
cchcch- Tan (can also be called gold)
Cce- Cream
cchce- Silver
cece- Offwhite

B Locus

The main gene determining colour.
There are two genes on the B locus, Black (B) and Liver (b).
Black is dominant, Liver is recessive.


BB = Black
Bb = Black carrying Liver
bb = Liver

D Locus

The gene determining dilution.
There are two genes on the D locus, Non-dilute/regular (D) and Dilute (d).
Non-dilute is dominant, Dilute is recessive.
Black dilutes into Blue.
Liver dilutes into Lilac.


DD = Non-dilute
Dd = Non-dilute
dd = Dilute

Eye Colour

Determined by the genes.


Black - brown/gold eyes
Blue - brown/gold or green eyes
Liver - brown/gold or green eyes
Lilac - brown/gold or green eyes

Blue eyes - with merle, harlequin, or high white.
Can be heterochromia (one eye blue or each eye mixed with blue)

II - dark intensity
Ii - medium intensity
ii - low intensity

does not carry much weight in the overall genotype

K Locus


Kb - dominant black
kbr - brindle
ky - allows A locus to express

kg - glass brindle
kc - king brindle
kvi - viverrid
kckvi - marbled king
Kbx - blixt (becomes dominant black w/ merle unless harlequin is present)

Kb_ seal/ghost

M Locus


cryptic merle - without any visible merle patches, may have blue eyes
minimal merle - minimal amount of light base patches
merle - classic merle patterning
tweed - multiple shades of black/brown/gray patches
patchwork - tweed with white pigment deletion
herding harlequin - merle in a classic or patchwork pattern with more extensive white deletion

S Locus


SS - solid
S_ - minimal white
sisi - irish white
spsp - piebald
swsw - extreme white

sb - belted white
st - striped white

T Locus


TT - heavy ticking
Tt - ticking/light ticking
TrT - roan/ticked roan
TrTr - heavy roan
Trt - roan
T+T+ - peppered
T+T - pepper ticked
T+Tr - pepper roan
T+t - light peppered
tt - no ticking

Tsr - rainfall

U Locus


U - no urajiro
uu - urajiro

L Locus


LL, Ll, Llc - smooth coat
