Combination folders integrate the folding mecha- nisms of buckle folders and knife folders. In its most com- mon configuration, the first section of a combination folder consists of several buckle fold plates, with the remaining sections having right-angle folding knives. The ideal application for combination machines is folding medium-size sheets, which often are designed vvith several different folds.
Combination folders make parallel folds with the buckle plates in the first folding station. The knife folder section makes any right-angle folds. Buckle plates are also used for folds parallel to the first right-angle fold. Conveyor tapes move the stock through the folder.
Combination machines fold heavier stock with less difficulty than buckle folders because the bulk of a folded piece does not have to pass through as many rollers and stock grain is less of a problem.
Because the units of combination folders are stacked instead of at right angles to one another, these machines need less floor space than all-buckle machines. The parallel section of a combination folder is similar to that of other folders, and it can produce the same folds as an all-buckle machine with a similar number of plates. Combination folders are, however, limited in their ability to handle right-angle folds.
