Chosen Prompt: What is their main goal in life?
Prompt Response:
There was the nothing, Gabriel could remember it very clearly. One moment there had been everything. There had been life, a vibrant world, friends, enemies, nature, music... civilization. His world. And then the next moment there was nothing. He had no exact memories, only the feelings and flashes of the past. The notion that where everything had been, there was nothing. Just... souls. In some cases, not even whole souls but broken essences still clinging together through trauma or determination. It was in this space they simply existed, with no notion of time or feeling. Unable to communicate with anything nearby. Floating, simply existing. He was pretty sure it was lonely, but it was hard in such a place to hold onto any one thought or feeling for very long.
He was aware of the two larger forces, which at times could be felt. One seemed warm, full of light. The other... was not quite the opposite but rather a tool of need, of force. Slowly but surely, the two forces took hold of souls, of essences, until the area around him felt much emptier day by day. And then one day, they came for him. The force of warmth and light reached out, enveloping him entirely. And then he realized he had eyes to open. He had eyes to open, skin with which to feel, a beating heart. He was alive, and after looking around him for a brief moment he realized he was in a temple of sorts. A temple, they explained, that belonged to the creatures known as Celestials. They were gathering the lost souls from the destroyed worlds that had not made it to Center in time, and giving them a new chance and a new life.
He was given the name Gabriel, but they told him he would need to find his own purpose. A purpose they gave to him, after all, would not mean nearly as much as a purpose he found for himself. He was taught what his new body could do, was taught language, was taught the basics of how Center functioned. And then he was sent out on a journey into the world itself, to find his purpose. There he discovered how diverse the people were... and how he looked and sounded like none of them. They seemed more grounded than he was, and he had no idea why. Was it because of how he came to be? Could he be grounded too, or was it impossible? How could he ever find a place when he was so disconnected? How could he relate to creatures that he had no ties for?
And then in the rain, he found a lost soul. In that moment, seeing someone as lost as he was, he knew he had to help. And so he took that crying lost soul, carrying them to shelter and warmth. As he saw the relief and love in this strange beings eyes, he knew immediately what his purpose was. He would protect, guide, and help the lost. He would help them find their way again, and just maybe in the process find more of himself as well. And friends. He would very much like to have friends.
