Thrinaxodon were a species of early mammals (protomammals) whose fossils have been found in ancient burrows from the Triassic era. Broomistega were a smaller species of reptiles living in the same era. In 1975, an oval-shaped burrow cast was discovered in South Africa. However, scientists couldn’t excavate the two fossils out of the cast without damaging them, so the cast went practically untouched until 2013. In that year, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility used a particle accelerator to scan the cast, allowing us to see what’s inside. When the scan was complete, scientists found the remains of a thrinaxodon and a broomistega inside, in a position reminiscent of a cuddle. It can be assumed that the burrow was dug by the thrinaxodon, the broomistega entered it in an attempt to find shelter, and both of them drowned together.
