Nothing. She is searching for… Nothing.

She is not searching for nothing whereas “nothing” implies that She is satisfied. No, for She is not satisfied at all. She is not simply lacking the desire to search for anything, rather, she is indeed searching for Nothing, the lack of anything. She is searching for Nothingness. Empty, silent, forgotten- just like Herself.

Nothing, as it is used in mathematics and the sciences, denotes a value of zero. How ironic it is, given that the value of nothingness is beyond comprehension. Granted, the state of nothingness itself is almost impossible to imagine. Of the fauna that roams the Earth, each is designed spectacularly to utilize its senses to observe, interpret, and comprehend its surroundings. While a kalon’s ears and nose are designed to help them hear and smell their way to survival, a human’s eyes allow them to see their way to success. Nature is designed to see, to smell, to feel, to sense. How could life thrive in the presence of nothing? No light and no darkness. No noise and no silence. Nothing. It is difficult to imagine, is it not?

So, if there is indeed nothing within nothingness, what determines its value? If nothingness holds no gold, no treasure, no reward within it (for nothingness lacks anything at all), why must someone be searching for it? As a being of the Earth, a being of sense, I myself cannot answer this. The only answer I can provide is that the total lack of anything surely has great value to those who search.

And She searches. She searches for nothing. And although She, like myself, is a being of the Earth, She is beyond the senses. She feels not the grass beneath her paws. She smells not the flowers of the Spring. She hears not the rustle of leaves around her. And despite the many eyes dotting Her figure, She sees not the faces who cross between the trees during the night.

She wishes for nothingness once more.

Of course, among the Earth, there can not exist nothing. Of a planet riddled with beasts given the gift of sense and observation, it is simply not capable of holding within it nothingness. She has searched far and wide for her beloved nothing, although her attempts have been futile (expectedly so). The closest thing that She has found to nothingness is a dingy, long-forgotten graveyard nestled shallowly within a wood of cypress and alder. This section of woods, known as the “Grove of Death” by the nearby townsfolk whose ancestors established the graveyard generations ago, was nothing like nothingness. In fact, a graveyard is very much. Unlike nothingness, the cemetery smelt like rotting leaves hidden under the underbrush. Unlike nothingness, the cemetery’s trees allowed speckles of golden sunlight to trickle through the branches and cast dancing streaks of light onto the compressed soil below. Unlike nothingness, the cemetery and its woods were alive with the sound of squirrels cracking open nuts and cramming them into their burrows at all hours of the day.

However, like nothingness, the graveyard provided Her with… peace. Sure, She was far from satisfied as Her forlorn heart ached for nothing, but the graveyard relieved a part of Her that previously went unsatisfied prior to Her settling here. The field of occupied graves encasing the remains of the dead was quiet, while the shrubbery surrounding the plot was alive with wildlife. On particularly warm days, She could even hear the townsfolk chattering in the distance, their voices hushed but lively.

Rarely does the graveyard have visitors. The inhabitants of the village, which sits in the meadow just beyond the wood, surely remember the graveyard. On some days, when a young’un brings their friend from school into the town, She can see them pointing toward the cemetery from beyond the rows of alder trees, chortling to themselves before eventually turning away and heading back from whence they came. Despite this, it remains uncommon for the townsfolk to approach the graveyard, whether it be to explore the long untouched tombstones or to grieve at the final resting place of a loved one. Regardless, the presence of unwanted company has always displeased Her.

In nothingness, there is nothing to surprise you and nothing to expect. In nothing, you cannot be scared, or shocked, or afraid, or surprised. You cannot be confused, or angry, or left to wonder. Nothingness leaves you with nothing to want, and nothing to desire. In nothingness, there is… nothing.

Yes, perhaps, that is the appeal to nothing. If there is nothing, then there is a lack of anything- including the things that can hurt you. In nothingness, there are no flashes of light that stings your eyes, and there is no darkness that leaves your eyes flooded with tears. In nothingness, there are no sharp bangs of noise which make your heart race, and there is no silence that leaves your heart desperate for a living thing’s touch. In nothingness, there is nothing other than protection.

Protection. She is searching for... Protection.
