Darkfire closed her eyes and relished the silence around her. There were few things she liked better than the faint rustling of leaves in the breeze, even though the cold chilled her to the bone.
After a few seconds of stillness, she continued on, bouncing slightly on her paws to stir some life back into her limbs.
While she walked, she kept her eyes open. To the side of the path she was following, she discovered a small patch of bindweed that had been sheltered between the roots of a large tree.

During the rest of her patrol, she couldn’t manage to find much else of interest, but she didn’t mind too much. Instead, she enjoyed the solitude, only stumbling upon some half-frozen scraps on the way back.

Flamefall lead the other five cats into the forest, all of them puffing up their fur to ward against the cold. Anxious, he felt his tail lash from side to side, and he was too nervous to try and suppress it. A lot was depending on the outcome of this patrol. They needed food and herbs, both desperately. Sorrelstar being sick was majorly concerning.
Luckily, not all the members of his patrol were as distracted as he was. Wavetail behind him hissed his name and vanished between some roots to Flamefall’s right after receiving a nod.
Snailtail and Heatherflight also split off, venturing into the forest on the patrol leader’s left side. He, Smoulderfur, and Frogrunner continued on the path.
After a short while, Wavetail rejoined them, carrying a mouse between his jaws.

“Well done,” Flamefall meowed.
Frogrunner poked him in the shoulder with his nose to catch his attention. “Do you smell that?”
Flamefall tilted his head while opening his mouth to scent.
“I do! Go and see if you find where it comes from.” The young warrior nodded and darted off.
The scent was sweet and strangely familiar, yet he didn’t recognize it.
Behind him, some ferns rustled and Snailtail and Heatherflight returned, the former carrying a rabbit.
[+1 Rabbit, 4 FP, +4 XP]

Relief washed through Flamefall. With Wavetail’s mouse this patrol had been a success the clan needed.
“Let’s wait for Frogrunner and return. There are a lot of hungry mouths back in the camp waiting for a bite of prey,” he announced. A heartbeat later, the tom rejoined the patrol, a few green herbs between his jaws.
[+1 Star’s Blessing, +1 XP]

“What are those?” he meowed through the leaves. “I’ve never seen them before!”
Flamefall sniffed carefully. “I’m not sure either. I’m sure Jay’s Wing will know.”
Frogrunner nodded, and together the six of them returned to their camp.

Sunclan
Snowstar woke up for the first time in her new home to a rumbling stomach. She had gotten used to hunting for food once she'd left her twolegplace and set out, so she decided to head out to look for food and explore the new territory.

LarchCreek Clan

In the beginning ...
It was sad when Layla had been discovered by dog; now known as dogwood. Her twoleg family had up and left her all alone in an abandoned home. It just so happened that dogwood was wondering around and had followed a mouse inside the home. It was a struggle at first, but eventually the two made up quickly once dogwood saw just how lost and alone the kitty pet had been. Short conversation was made and off the pair was. In search of something new.

Currently ...
The two cats padded around pondering on what their new home may be like. The last few weeks they were welcomed into a new kind of home. A cat clan named Moonclan. Their leader Nightstar had welcomed them with open paws and was nice enough to let the two cats learn the ways of the clan itself. They hadn’t really thought about leaving until Layla had a Dream, walking with the spirits they called starclan. They had mentioned of greater times with many more cats to encounter on their journey. Layla becoming the trusted leader and renamed Larchstar, and her loyal companion appointed as the Deputy. After her dream Larchstar and dogwood set off in hopes of finding their new home.

As they made it into camp, Ash paused suspiciously. Something was... off.
Gull and Sunny who had been murmuring together quietly stumbled into Ash's rump, and they both looked up in surprise.
Ash hesitated before peering around the edge of one of the buildings.
A large, brown tomcat with curled ears, a long fluffy tail, and a scar riddled coat stood in the middle of the clearing, his back to them.
A low hiss reverberated from within Gull's chest and Ash shot him an annoyed side glare.
"Hello?" Ash called out, and the tomcat turned around. He had large copper eyes, a slightly smushed muzzle, and a soft expression.
"Ah, hello there. I was hoping to find the owners of this land."
"What's your issue?" Gull grumbled, and Sunny sighed.
"Is everything okay?"
The stranger shot a soft look at Sunny, before looking back at Ash.
"Oh yes, everything is perfectly okay." He had a slightly clipped accent that none of the cats had heard before. "I was just curious if you guys accept new members into your... uh... group?"
Ash felt a smile slowly spread across his face, new member perhaps... he thought, intrigued at the idea of having more members to his growing tribe.
"Of course. My name is Ash of Past Flames, but I go by Ash. This here is Sun that Beats on Fur," He nodded to the golden she-cat. "And this is Gull - or Gull that Glides on Wind. Don't mind the hostility."
Gull shot a dirty look at them all, before grumbling under his breath.

Several hours passed, with Gull trying to convince the others that this newcomer - "Dozer" was apparently his name - was untrustworthy. However, before sunset the deal was done, the ritual completed, and the tomcat was renamed Owl - or "Owl that Sleeps at Day".

with a small nod to the rest of the patrol, flower instructed the clan to follow the raccoon's scent with caution. while it was important to chase the creature off of their territory, the leader didn't want any of his clanmembers to get injured in the process.
making sure to step forward as silently as they could, the group pursued the raccoon with careful pawsteps. as they continued forward, the scent seemed to grow fainter as it led to an area outside of the clan's territory.
"it's gone." flower said as they turned back to face the patrol. "let's head back. hopefully we can catch something on our way to camp."
though pursuing the predator had been in vain after all, flower still couldn't help but feel grateful that it had already left their territory. getting by in leafbare was difficult enough, after all, and he'd prefer to avoid any dangerous confrontations if he could.

as the patrol left the outskirts of their territory, dew was able to spot a squirrel close by! he sprinted after it, swiftly catching the creature in his paws as it tried to scurry up a nearby tree. lifting his head up triumphantly, the tom returned to the others to show off his catch. it seemed to be pretty well fed, as far as leafbare prey went, and was sure to feed a good few mouths. (+3fp, +3xp)

snow was also able to catch a vole along the way! it seemed to be distracted with finding food in the underbrush, making it an easy catch for the molly. (+2fp, +2xp)

the patrol made their way through the territory, flower was able to spot something out of the corner of his eye. he beckoned for the others to follow, and upon further inspection they discovered a big patch of herbs poking through the icy ground. carefully, as to not damage them, they picked the gentle stalks from the ground and brushed the frost off of them. fortunately for the patrol, the herbs seemed to have been spared from the harsh cold around them. gently grabbing the leafy stalks in their jaws, the group carried as many herbs as they could before continuing their journey back to camp. snowstar set out of her camp, an undeniable emptiness in her stomach. despite the unfamiliarity of the area around her, she hoped that she'd be able to catch at least something to ease her growling belly. finding food in leafbare was more difficult than ever, and so the leader had to be sure to be alert of her surroundings. and besides, she wouldn't pass up the opportunity to gain more knowledge of her new clan's territory. it would be important for her to know the best places to hunt and forage, after all.

with her head raised slightly, she made her way through the underbrush. it wasn't long before the molly came across the bony, limp body of a mouse partially concealed undrr some pine needles. thr scent was so faint, and it was such a small creature, that she had almost passed by it without noticing. it seemed to have succumbed to either starvation or the cold, as a good amount of prey usually did during the harsh season of leafbare. still, despite not being much of a meal, it would at least help with her hunger. (+1fp, +1xp)

as she continued her search, snowstar was also able to come across a good few herbs! luckily for her, there were a few that she was able to recognize without much difficulty. with a small nod to herself, the molly took note that this would be a good place to come back to if she needed herbs. Ferretstar had gone out again, leaving his comfy den. It was almost like a house, but no fox-dung uprights. He walked, the cold still whipping his fur and skin. It stung, but he could deal with it. He was a leader now, after all. Leaders had to be tough- brave! Adventurous! Ferretstar jumped when a bird called out behind him. He isn't all there yet, but he will be. Just need to get there. It's something he has to do. He shook his head, small bits of snow crunching under his feet. It was melting, and that was good. The prey would come out, right? Hopefully. And- more herbs.

Poppyclan
Cloverspark sighed as she returned to her small pile of herbs and prey and deposited the remains of the vole with the rest of her stash. She had quite a few things, and it was starting to become difficult to carry them all, but she became anxious at the thought of leaving anything behind. Who knows what could happen to her out here on her own? It was better to deal with the inconvenience of carrying them than to regret not having something later.

Rewrapping her pile of objects in the comfrey leaves, Cloverspark picked them up and continued on in the direction of the smoke. As she walked, the forest ahead of her began to thin out, and she had an easy time navigating between the large gaps in the trees.

It was amazing to Cloverspark how different the forest could look after traveling so little distance at all. While the area around her old camp had been surrounded by a mixture of different deciduous trees and thorny bramble thickets, where she was now instead had tall, thin pines and soft ferny undergrowth, with barely any snow at all. She was glad for the change though, the new growth was much easier under her paws than the frozen earth from before.

The wind changed direction and suddenly the sweet scent of cedar smoke flooded Cloverspark's nose. She must be getting close.

She continued onwards, breathing deeply and straining her sense of smell to the limits of her abilities. The scents of twolegs and plastic and savory twoleg food joined the scent of smoke as she ventured further on her journey. Pushing through one last patch of bracken, Cloverspark was finally able to see the clearing that the smoke has been coming from.

A wide meadow full of wildflowers stretched ahead of her, a few bright green and orange twoleg tents dotting it like giant blooms. The campfire burned near the edge of the meadow, leaving a large space completely empty of any twoleg junk. A few twolegs and a twoleg kit were gathered around the campfire, laughing and squawking and being generally obnoxious.

Cloverspark grimaced. Did they really need to be so loud? The twolegs' screeches were grating on her ears even from all the way where she was, so many foxlengths away. At this rate she would end up with a headache. She didn't remember her old twoleg EVER being that loud, as they were usually content to speak quietly into their little soundbox or to stay silent altogether. Cloverspark wondered how they were getting along now that she was gone. It wasn't really worth dwelling on though, she wasn't going to go back. Her twoleg has treated her kindly, but being a housecat was not the life for her. She hoped they were doing alright anyways.

Depositing her bundle of food and herbs in the patch of bracken, Cloverspark began to slink forward to explore what the clearing had to offer. She approached one of the twoleg tents, a bright and gaudy thing, and began to sniff around. Nothing of interest, just strange twoleg food and the acrid scent of chemicals that lingered on all twoleg things.

Well away from the twolegs, Cloverspark relaxed a little, and moved to explore near the other tent. It was slightly smaller, but no less bright in color. As she grew closer, the soft scent of another cat touched her nose.

She was right! She knew she would find something if she headed towards the smoke, and she was feeling quite pleased with her intuition. Cloversaprk circled the tent, drawing air into her nose as she analyzed what she was smelling. It was a tom, probably not much older than her, and his scent was somewhere between the sweeter smell of a kittypet and the sharp tang that lingered in the fur of other forest cats. Strange, usually it was clear in the scent of most cats what type of life they decided to live. Maybe they were a stray?

Cloverspark gingerly pushed her head into the front flap of the tent, nervous at getting so close, but absolutely determined to find whoever it was that she had smelled after having been alone for so long. She'd come much too far to give up because of a measly tent. There was no one inside, but Cloverspark did see a clear container of kibble, and the scent of cat and twoleg became much stronger. So they did live with the twolegs.

Though she was disappointed at not locating the cat sooner, Cloverspark felt more confident about finding them. If they lived with the twolegs, they must still be here at the camp. Cloverspark withdrew her head from the tent and looked around.

Zeroing in on the campfire, Cloverspark noticed the twitch of a tail halfway hidden behind the leg of one of the twolegs. That was going to make things more difficult.

Lowering herself further into the brown grass she stood in, Cloverspark crept closer, positioning herself so that she was upwind of the fire. She knew that the twolegs wouldn't scent her, oblivious that they are, but she hoped that if the cat scented her she wouldn't have to get so close. She would rather avoid being spotted and grabbed, thank you very much.

From here Cloverspark could see the other cat more clearly, a smoky gray tom lounging between the paws of a female twoleg. As she watched, the tom's ears pricked up and his eyes widened. He'd sensed her, thank Starclan. She didn't want to move any closer to the twolegs than she already was, as her heart was rabbiting in her chest even at the fair distance she was at.

The gray tom slipped from between the twolegs, and headed in her direction, though he stopped short a few foxlengths away, limited in movement by a long red tendril. Steeling her nerves, Cloverspark approached him.

"Hello, who are you?" He whispered once she got close enough, crouched in the grass with his green eyes wide and curious.

"I'm Cloverspark," She whispered back. "Who are YOU?" She echoed his words back at him.

"My name is Flick, I'm just here camping with my twolegs," He mewed.

That must be why he smelled so much like the forest, he'd been out here for a while.

"Is that why you're attached to this thing?" Cloverspark gestured towards the tendril that trailed behind Flick on the ground with her tail.

Flick drooped his ears. "Yeah, that's just my leash. I guess they didn't want me running off, I can barely move around when I'm attached to it though." Suddenly he snapped his head up to meet Cloverspark's eyes. "Hey, do you think you could help me get this thing off?" Flick asked excitedly.

Cloverspark hesitated.

"Are you sure? What about your twolegs?" Cloverspark was ecstatic at the thought of having another cat to travel with, but she felt guilty. What if Flick only wanted to get off of this 'leash'? What if he didn't want to come with her at all?

"Oh, they'll be fine. I'm tired of being dragged around by my tail and shoved in the car every time they feel like going somewhere new. I've been trying to get away from them for weeks now," Flick mewed easily.

Worried thoughts silenced, Cloverspark felt hope bubble up in her chest.

"You could come with me, if you want," she offered. "I don't have twolegs, I live in the wild on my own. It gets kind of lonely sometimes, and I wouldn't mind having someone to talk to."

Flick's eyes shone with excitement, his whiskers lit from behind with light from the campfire.

"You'd really take me with you?" Flick asked incredulously. "But, I don't know how to hunt at all, won't I get in the way?"

Cloverspark smiled and mrrowed a laugh.

"I didn't know how to hunt when I first ended up out here either, you'll pick it up. I can teach you!" Cloverspark's tailtip twitched back and forth with excitement.

"That sounds incredible. I would love to, but first I have to get out of this stupid harness," Flick dug his claws into the ground impatiently. "It has a clasp on my back that keeps it on. I've been trying to get it open for ages, but I just can't reach it," He mewed with frustration.

Cloverspark peered over his shoulder at the clasp situated between his shoulder blades, complicated looking and made of some hard, black, twoleg material.

"Maybe I can get it," she mewed quietly, reaching out a paw to nudge the clasp.

"By all means, try," Flick responded, turning to give her easier access to it. "It has two bits on it that move, if you can push them both down at the same time it should pop open."

Cloverspark looked back at the twolegs gathered around the campfire anxiously.

"Will it be loud? I don't want to get their attention," she meowed, voice low.

"Oh, not at all. I've seen the twolegs do it a bunch of times, it doesn't make any noise," Flick meowed unworriedly.

Cloverspark lifted a paw to push on the side of the clasp. She felt it give slightly under her claws, and pop back into place when she pulled her paw away.

"I think I'm going to have to use my teeth, hold very still," She warned Flick. He calmed his swishing tail and held his breath.

Positioning her jaw around the clasp, Cloverspark bit down on either side of it, pushing in the sides. She screwed up her face, the twoleg material bitter and acrid on her tongue. It hurt her teeth, but she could feel it moving, so she bit down harder, despite her discomfort. Suddenly there was a quiet click, and the clasp came apart in Cloverspark's mouth. She spat it out and took a step back.

"You did it! Thank you so much, you have no idea how much I wanted to get rid of that," Flick mewed, shaking the loose harness off of his pelt.

"Let's go then. Unless you've changed your mind?" Cloverspark studied Flick's face. He rolled his eyes.

"Are you kidding? I'm ready to go," Flick responded, kneading his claws into the ground.

Satisfied with his answer, Cloverspark turned and beckoned him with her tail.

"Follow me then," she whispered, creeping through the grass back towards where she had hidden her belongings. With Flick on her heels, Cloverspark padded over to the patch of bracken and reached in to pick up her herb and prey bundle. She looked up to see Flick gazing back at the twolegs.

"Will you miss them?" She asked gently. Flick looked back to meet her gaze.

"Maybe, but I'm happy to be leaving. They'll be fine without me, and that isn't the kind of life I want to live anymore," he mewed back sincerely.

Cloverspark could sympathize. She understood exactly how he was feeling, having gone through it herself those many moons ago. She had dealt with it alright though, and she knew she had made the right choice. She thought that Flick probably felt the same. Though she hadn't known him long, Cloverspark had a feeling that Flick would do just fine. He was young, eager and he seemed like a resilient cat. Besides, she was there to help him if things got rough, a big step up from her own experience, learning and dealing with living in the wild all on her own.

"Well, we should probably get moving." Cloverspark changed the subject. The pinks and oranges of sundown were starting to show themselves on the horizon, and she knew it wouldn't be long before it was dark and cold. "I say we head west, towards the cliffs, there will probably be some decent shelter over that way," she suggested.

Flick nodded his head in agreement. With Flick following behind her, they both headed off into the forest, sights set on the gray and brown streaked cliffs not far in the distance.

The two cats padded through a forest, staying closely together to ward against the cold. Larchstar wasn’t sure how long they had been walking for so far, but her paws hurt, and she was beginning to grow hungry. Hopefully, she and Dogwood would find a place to stay and found their clan soon.
A few minutes later, Dogwood halted her with a flick of his tail. “Do you hear that?”
Larchstar tilted her head, wondering what her deputy might mean, but after listening for a second also noticed the low rush of moving water. “A river,” she meowed. “Let’s go and take a look, I’m thirsty.”
The tom agreed and together they made their way over roots and between ferns over to the stream. The wind was icy and cold, and the ground was covered with a thin blanket of snow here, but the water hadn’t frozen over.
They carefully picked a spot where they wouldn’t be sprayed with too much of the biting water and lapped up a few mouthfuls.
“Let me see if I can find some fish,” Dogwood suggested, crouching near the waterline with his eyes fixed on the shallow part of the river close to his paws. Larchstar watched him intently. Being a former kitty pet, her hunting skills left something to be desired still, though she found herself to be quickly improving and able to learn a lot by watching others.
Right now, she studied Dogwood sitting eerily still, only the very tip of his tail twitching in tension. Then, in a flash, a front paw darted out and shot into the water, batting a fat fish out and onto the earth beside him. Before his prey could wriggle back, he pounced and quickly killed it with a well-aimed bite.
Larchstar purred in contentment. This was an excellent catch.

They continued on through the woods, staying relatively close to the river for a while. Near its shores, the two of them found some herbs that might prove to be useful, especially in the cold seasons where cats were sure to fall sick sooner or later.

The next morning, the four cats set out together. Gull was still irritated, though he tried his best to keep his hostility hidden. He still didn’t trust the stranger – or Owl, as he was now called. He’d just shown up in their camp, without an explanation or a reason, and had looked at Sunny like that – how dared he? Gull resolved to keep both eyes firmly on the newcomer to make sure he didn’t get any funny ideas.
However, he was forced to admit Owl was a good hunter when he caught a squirrel while the others didn’t manage to find any prey during the entirety of their patrol. Only Sunny stumbled upon some chervil, and later was able to extract some foxglove seeds. Owl complimented her, Sunny smiled, and Gull was fuming.

It was luckily a rather mild day today, of course there was still snow everywhere - as it mostly was during any time of the year - but the wind seemed to have calmed down a little. The deputy Hawkflight had decided it was time to go on a patrol to hunt for prey because she seemed to be quite sure the weather won't be playing along for much longer, maybe another day or two. Falconcry, Firestorm, Flamepetal and Scratchface where sent out but one of them was rather unhappy about it. "I don't like going on a hunting patrol", Firestorm puffed out, his breath forming a small cloud of fog in the cold air. Luckily, the cats of GhostClan had thick fur and were used to the cold. "Yeah we know", Falconcry chuckled, walking next to him as the group of four went out of the camp and deeper into the forest, "That's because you can't hunt. Well you can, but not as well as me anyway." The red tom scoffed quietly and held his nose slightly higher than before. "I'm better than you in everything. Just wait and see. I bet I can find prey sooner than you do", he meowed, pretty confident in his hunting skills although he knew he wasn't exactly the best hunter, he was more of a fighter. The adrenaline rushing through his body during a fight was so much better than having to stand still for ages to catch the prey. He simply didn't like hunting, it was boring but he knew that it was important to feed the clan and keep it strong and healthy. "If you two don't stop talking we won't catch anything", Scratchface warned the two with a slightly annoyed tone in his voice, causing Firestorm to promptly roll his green eyes but for once, he kept his mouth shut. He didn't want to be the reason the Clan came home with nothing to eat afterall.
