Ocean Clan
Tansypetal gently picked the plants from the large herb clump, this was amazing for her! She was walking back when she scented a scent she thought she never would, not the herbs but a rogue cat! She shook her head to clear it and continued on her way. She smiled and got a bounce in her step, her mouth full of useful herbs and some scraps she had found were already back in her cave-den-tunnel-system home. She nearly danced around with glee, another sign to keep going! Her brother must've been watching over her. What if it was a cat that she'd... fall for? Blush covered her face. No, she couldn't distract herself with a minor fairytale, reality Tansypetal, reality. She shook her head again and she grinned all the way home. She placed the herbs in the small, herb storage cavelet. She looked over her stock and realized she had loads of herbs, all of which were still beautifully brand-new. She quietly trudged down the cave walls and to her den which she had decided would be the leaders' and deputies' den. She smiled exhaustion nearly toppling her over. She laid in her large moss nest and fell asleep, quietly snoring. The sun started to rise and shone it's light through the entrance, which led to her den. She flicked her ears and smiled. Another day, another chance. Maybe she'd find that cat she scented. She passed by her prey pile and looked at it, Nah, she'd eat before she went on her second search that day. She yawned and stretched by the glowing entrance, angled directly at the rising sun. She walked down the slope, her usual self coming back to her as excitement filled her heart and gravely encouraged her. She grinned as the fresh, bright, morning breeze broke through herself, her energy making it feel refreshing instead of cold. She leaped over logs and closed her eyes, letting her paws lead her to whatever awaited her, good or bad.

Silverpaw did his best to follow Shadowstep’s advice, copying the warrior’s stance and opening his mouth to scent for possible prey in the vicinity. At first, he only smelled the ever-present pines, but the longer he waited, the more differing scents appeared to him. The snow muted all sounds and the scents’ intensity, but soon he managed to make out something warm and alive between the roots to his right. After shooting his mentor an excited look and receiving a calm nod in return, he stalked slowly, carefully over to where he knew the shrew was probably frantically searching for something to eat under the freshly fallen blanket of white. Keeping in mind all of Shadowstep’s advice he stayed downwind of the animal, paid attention to the placement of his paws and managed, after a small wiggle and a big pounce, to catch the shrew between his teeth and break its neck with a quick bite.
His head held high and eyes gleaming, he returned to the rest of the group.

“Very well done,” Shadowstep meowed. “Did you watch him, Dawnpaw?”
His sister purred audibly. “I did! Good job, Silverpaw!”
Silverpaw puffed up his chest fur, feeling accomplished. His catch would surely be useful to the clan during the cold season.
“Let us continue, maybe we can find something else useful,” Berrysnap suggested behind them and the patrol continued on their way deeper into the territory.
Unfortunately, though, they were unsuccessful in their search for more prey. But on their way back, Dawnpaw managed to stumble upon some water hemlock! She carefully plucked it and took it back to the camp with her.

His fur puffed up against the cold, Flower that grows under tree made his way through his new territory, checking out various nooks and crannies he came across, stopping periodically to sniff for herbs or prey nearby.
He had been walking for a while, finding neither food nor more herbs for his small camp, when suddenly an unexpected scent washed over him, making him slow down to an eventual halt. His tail lashing in tension and he felt his heart beat faster. A cat! What was another cat doing here? Did this mean he wasn’t alone here after all? He hadn’t noticed any signs of anyone living here on his last exploration.
His muscles tense and ready to flee should he encounter hostility he made his way toward the new cat that was still hidden somewhere between the thickly growing trees. Hopefully he would make a new friend today!

For a moment, Hawkstar had thought it had all been a dream. The ravens, the dream of celestial cats, the enormous cedar upon whose limbs grew smaller trees… Surely none of that could have been real.

But here they were, curled in fallen needles and shredded bark of that self-same massive tree, inside the hollow heart the Starclan cats had spoke of filling with life and new stories. Far above, Hawkstar could hear ravens calling and laughing.
“So it wasn’t a dream”, they murmured, before uncurling from their makeshift nest to have a better look around.

The giant cedar—Forest’s Heart, the Starclan cats had called it—occupied the majority of the clearing, with branches that stretched upwards and outwards into a kind of infinity, before disappearing into the mist high above. This could make a real home, Hawkstar mused, their ears pricked for any new sounds.

The ravens had moved on, and the relative quiet had revealed the laughing burble of a brook, hidden somewhere behind all the ferns and smaller spruces. A harmonizing gurgle from their stomach reminded them that breakfast wouldn’t be the worst idea, and they padded in the direction of the stream, each footfall measured and sure; with a place this perfect, surely they wouldn’t be alone…!

Wispstar found himself waking with a bit of a start. The abandoned den he had managed to wedge himself into for the night was full of unfamiliar smells. His fur prickled and it took a moment for the fog in his mind to clear. His eyes darted to the opening of the den. It had to be sun-high by now. He had been exhausted from traveling by the time he found this den, but he still didn't expect to sleep for so long. As he pulled his sore muscles out of the shelter, he sent a silent prayer of thanks to Starclan that no predators had found him while he was in such a deep sleep.

Once he had emerged, his eyes darted around his environment. He had come upon this place in the dark and hadn't had a moment to take in everything. Glancing up through the thick canopy of leaves he determined it definitely was sun-high, if not a bit past. After a gentle stretch he made his way to the faint sound of water. After making his way through some underbrush he came upon a shallow ford in the river. He took a few tentative sips before setting off to explore the area to see if it was a suitable place to call home.

Shaking his body to get rid of the lingering cold in his bones he made his way through the underbrush, dry leaves crinkling beneath his paws. The air smelled like snow and a cool breeze ruffled his fur.
Hopefully, there was still prey around, he thought, though he knew that most of the rodents had probably withdrawn to their burrows already.
He retraced his steps to an acorn tree he had passed yesterday, glad that he remembered the way even though he had been almost too exhausted to walk.
Acorns were littering the forest floor, and on silent paws he crept closer, his mouth open to scent any mice, shrews, or squirrels that might be around.
His ears twitched. There! A small vole was nibbling on one of the nuts, its small black eyes completely focused on its meal. Staying downwind, he stalked closer until the animal was in pouncing range, steadied his footing, leapt – and killed the vole with a quick bite.
[+1 Vole, +2 FP, +2XP]

This would surely prove useful in the colder days to come.
He thought for a moment about where to go next when a sharp smell washed over him – that of another cat! What was an intruder doing in his new territory?
And should he pursue the rogue or let it go?

Totals
+2 FP | +32 XP | Level 0 [032/100]

Note:
Please pick some other predators until your next explore post. They should be realistic for cats to defeat, and even a full patrol of six cats wouldn’t be able to stand a chance against a wolf or a bear.
Thank you!

The Tribe of Singing Wind
There was only one thing on Flower that grows under tree's mind as they stepped out from their den, looking around their camp. ``I must carry on through this cold! For the sake of my future tribe``. The cold had only grown since their previous days in the field, and it was more apparent by the day that their small camp and make-shift den wouldn't keep the cold out much longer.

They spent the majority of their day fixing up camp, fixing and making dens, and organizing their herbs. ``If only we had a healer...``, they spoke aloud as they gently placed the herbs into a small pile in what they thought would make a suitable Healer's den. Flower felt full of pride, looking around their future tribe's camp. ``It does kinda feel like a home now``, they said with a smile.

They left the camp after a quick nap, seeking perhaps some more prey or herbs. ``Even if I don't find anything, I can still take this time to familiarize myself with my territory``, they thought, tasting the air for any prey scent they could find. They bounded off into a new direction, the frost chilling their paws and slipping on the small creeks that had frozen over.

the molly lifted her nose in the air, hoping to catch the scent of the rogue she had found signs of the day before. recalling where she had been, tansypetal slowly made her way back to the area where she had picked up the other cat's scent. she made sure to stay alert of her surroundings along the way, just in case the opportunity to catch prey arose. with her constant journeys outside of camp, she had to be sure to keep up her strength.

try as she might, tansypetal found herself unable to find any signs of the rogue from before. letting out a low growl of frustration, she turned around and spotted a mouse nosing its way through the underbrush only a few tail-lengths away. looking for a place to burrow and stay warm, most likely. as the small creature had its attention focused elsewhere, she seized the opportunity to make a quick, easy catch. while she hadn't found another cat, she did find something to eat! taking note that the sun was beginning to set, the molly began her return to camp. while on the way back, she came across a couple of herbs! deciding that she'd rather be safe than sorry, she grabbed a couple to bring back with her (+1 catmint, +1 elder leaves). especially since she was on her own, tansypetal had to be sure to stay well-stocked on herbs in case she got injured or fell sick again.

following the path of the stream, hawkstar began their search for a meal. fortunately for them, the area around them didn't seem to be very affected by the season of leafbare that had just recently approached. they made sure to step forward with quiet, careful pawsteps, their gaze focused on the small creek next to them. the creatures that resided there, most likely things such as little fish, would be difficult for hawkstar to spot if they weren't alert.

after a few moments of travelling along the stream, hawkstar was finally able to spot a rock goby darting around in the clear waters. quickly striking the spot where it was with unsheathed claws, they soon had caught the small fish in one of their paws. it wasn't much, being such a tiny creature, but at least it would keep their belly full for the time being (+1fp, +1xp)

stepping forward cautiously, the leader made sure to stay well aware of their surroundings. while it seemed to be near-perfect in their eyes, it was still an unfamiliar place to them. after some time exploring the area, hawkstar spotted something tucked away behind a wide tree stump. upon further inspecting it, they discover a well-sized cluster of herbs! satisfied with their find, they grabbed a few to bring along with them. (+1 catchweed, +1 thyme, +1 lungwort)

though hawkstar had begun to think of the morning as a fairly calm one, they caught the vague scent of a fox in the area while walking through the foliage. it seemed to be somewhat fresh, too, which meant the predator was most likely not very far away from where they were. unsure of what they should do, hawkstar weighed their options on what to do: do they choose to follow or ignore the fox's scent?

Silverpaw, Dawnpaw, and their mentors returned to camp, the apprentices feeling accomplished. Nightstar and Sandcloud had evidently also returned not long before- there was a new shrew on the fresh kill pile, and Silverpaw placed his on top of it gently. Those would be eaten later- during leafbare, prey was rationed more carefully.

"Dawnpaw, take those herbs to Salem. They were just complaining about not having enough stock." Berrysnap said, pushing the fawn tabby up towards the entrance to Salem's den.

She pushed through the moss and hanging plants covering the tunnel entrance, meowing out a hello. Salem was fishing something out of their pool, and flicked their tails at her as she entered.

"What did you find, what do you have, for me?" Salem asked after a moment of silence, not looking up from the pool.

Dawnpaw cleared her throat, setting the herbs she had gathered on the ground. "I don't actually know what it is- Berrysnap just told me to grab it, it looks like the sort of thing you use?"

Salem sighed, and slowly stood up from their sitting position with the crack of bones. "Let me see, let me see..." They padded over to her, and glanced down at the plant with small white flowers. It only took them a moment to recognize it, and they furrowed their brow. "That, my dear dear apprentice, is water hemlock! Good find, poisonous. Very, poisonous. I, if I were you, I wouldn't recommend eating it! It would hurt a lot, and with a cat your size, so small. Probably do more than just pain and foaming. Much more. Writhing, pain, foaming from the mouth, death." They stared her down, towering over her small form for a moment, and Dawnpaw shuddered, glad she hadn't done more than carry it, wishing she hadn't even done that.

Salem picked the herb up carefully, carrying it to their storage area, setting it into a corner of one of the alcoves in the rock. "Thanks, thank you, for finding this. I'm sure it will be useful, one day, eventually..." they trail off, lost in though, muttering quietly to themself.

The noise echoed eerily in the cavern chamber, distorted, and Dawnpaw quickly left with a hurried "Bye, Salem!," another shudder traveling down her spine. Where was Egg when she needed them- they might be weird as well, but at least they were much less scary.

    (( ----------- a few days later, a new patrol sets off! ----------- ))

Egg was sorting through the few herbs they had left, humming quietly to themself, when the scratchy clearing of a throat behind them made them turn around. Salem, their mentor (and sometimes weird-uncle-sibling figure?) stood their, glancing down at the herbs at Egg's paws with what looked like disdain in their large, multicolored eyes.

"Eggy, eggy, egg, we need more herbs- this is pitiful, even for winter, for leafbare." Salem hissed roughly.

Egg snorted in amusement, nodding as they stand up. "Yeah, we do! What do you propose we do about it, oh wise Healer?" They asked with a grin.

Salem shot them a soft glare. "You, you are going to go on patrol, find some more herbs! You need to, you must make sure silly apprentices bring back something more useful than hemlock- we need to actually heal, sometimes, occasionally. Hemlock is not good for healing."

"Anything specific we're looking for?" Egg asked, cocking their head.

"No, no, no, nothing specific, just anything you can find, anything. The cold kills most plants- anything in this weather, in this cold, is a blessing," they pause for a moment, "From- from the stars, or something! It's good, go find some herbs, Eggy." And with that, Salem shooed the earless cat out of the healer's den, into the main cavern.

Egg found Minnowstrike, Dawnpaw, and Berrysnap waiting near the entrance- they shivered in anticipation of going out into the cold of the snow-covered forest, away from the comfortable warmth of their caves.

"Egg! You're coming with us?" Dawnpaw called when she spotted them, and they nod, giving her a grin.

"Yep! Ol' Salem needed someone to make sure we get the right herbs, if any, and my eyes are better than most!" they wink, and Dawnpaw giggles.

Berrysnap and Minnowstrike share a look, and then quickly look away from each other in mild disgust at ever even sharing a look in the first place. "Alright, Dawnpaw, why don't you take the lead? Minnowstrike will be in charge of hunting, Egg in charge of herb finding- you and I are on scouting duty." Berrysnap instructed, leading the group through the entrance tunnel into the soft moonlight.

The moon had seemingly just rise, still mostly hidden by the trees and mountains coating the horizon, but the bright white snow blanketing the forest floor helped light up the night.

Dawnpaw excitedly took the lead, scenting the air for a moment before heading south into the pines. Egg followed at the back of the pack, keeping an eye out for anything Salem might find useful.

Flower that grows under tree managed to cross the meadow without falling or hurting themselves. There was so much of this new territory that they hadn’t been able to explore yet that they almost didn’t know where to begin.
They stood for a second, closing their eyes and letting the cold winter breeze ruffle their fur. It was blowing westward, so westward they went, too. Hoping for many finds, they dived into the forest.
They had only been walking through the trees for a short while when they stumbled upon a strange structure in a clearing. Peculiar dens were built here, though way too large for any cat.
Those must have belonged to upwalkers, Flower realized with a start. Luckily, there seemed to be none around. They hadn’t had the best experience with the creatures in the past. In fact, the buildings seemed rather desolate, the roofs caved in and all scents stale. The whole place seemed like it had been abandoned for seasons.
Still, the atmosphere made Flower’s skin crawl and they decided to explore the surroundings instead of the upwalker dens themselves.
Taking care to stay at a distance, they moved carefully between the buildings, scenting periodically for threats. Instead, another smell entered their nose: food! Finally. They hadn’t had anything to eat in – how long? Too long, in any case.
Excitedly, Flower followed the trail to a small pile of deliciously smelling scraps. There was a scent of fox still around, but old. The predator had probably killed its prey here and left the rest after it had finished eating. Flower that grows under tree carefully took the scraps in their mouth and started in the direction they had come from when they smelled something else, familiar and pleasant. A quick investigation led them to some herbs growing next to the wall of one of the strange dens: sweet sedge, surviving bravely against the cold.
They gladly moved to remove a few grasses and, too, grab them between their jaws. On the way home, they also found two stalks of watermint and managed to pry some willow bark off of a tree they passed. The camp was steadily growing!

Egg kept their eyes on the ground and paid attention to any stray scents that may lead them to the healing herbs Salem had requested. Behind them, Dawnpaw was chittering about anything and nothing at all. Right now, she was telling Berrysnap about how creepy she thought Salem had been when she’d brought them herbs the last time.
Egg suppressed a smile as they imagined Salem’s reaction when Egg was going to tell them back in camp.
“Will you hush?” Minnowstrike snapped at the two of them, having come to a halt a few steps behind them. “I smell something!”
“Sorry,” Dawnpaw whispered, folding back her ears. The warrior flicked her tail, signaling her acceptance of the apology, and disappeared into the underbrush. Egg heard a rustling sound, and a few seconds later the molly reappeared with a limp rabbit hanging from her jaws.
What a lucky catch! Egg was pleased. Fewer hungry cats meant fewer sick cats.

Thinking of sick cats, they realized that they hadn’t scented for herbs in a while and raised their head, sniffing deeply for any traces.
There – Egg searched their brain for the smell for a second and then purred in amusement. Typical. Salem had asked for healing herbs and they would come back with death berries. Well, they were better than nothing, weren’t they?
“Wait here for a second, I’ll be right back,” Egg meowed and left the rest of the patrol to get the poisonous fruits. It was better if the others stayed back so they couldn’t poison themselves on accident. Even stepping in one and then licking the paw clean could have disastrous consequences, as Salem had warned them often enough.
Egg’s heart beating in their chest, they wrapped the berries that they had found in a leaf and grabbed it to carefully carry it back to the others.
“Let’s go back with our findings, shall we?” Berrysnap proposed and Egg was only too happy to agree. The berries were making them nervous.
They took a slightly different route back and Egg scented some raspberry leaves nearby, which they sent Dawnpaw to fetch. Confrontation with one’s fears was the best way to fight them, after all. And also they’d enjoy seeing her interact with Salem again when they would deliver them their herbs.
