What are Oterals?
Oterals are small-medium (range between a mole to a red panda) sized mammals that live in fairly large colonies. The colonies are split between two variants, a ground variant and a water one.
Ground variants seem to be in charge of creating dens by digging underground tunnels, searching for insects and they stand on guard, watching over the group to make sure everyone is safe. Water variants actually wander away from the group to hunt fish and bring it back to share with the entire colony - the variants don't interbreed though they just live together. Their diet mainly consists of bugs, fish and some vegetation.
They key differences are noted below:
• Water variant has webbed feet, gills and a powerful tail which acts to aid swimming
• Ground variant has powerful claws for digging, generally larger
Another key feature of these species is their impressive crystal embedded in their forehead. This crystal seems to signify the creatures rank in the group, the leader for example has the largest and most impressive crystal. It has been noted that upon death the crystal becomes clear and fragile, losing all it's properties so as a result humans have no interest in hunting them. Their crystal is extremely durable, almost impossible to damage but per chance it is damaged the creature won't experience any discomfort but it also won't regrow and regain it's original lustre
These animals are very friendly and curious, another interesting trait noticed is they are hoarders. Each one has a different item they hoard which is decided when they're young, they'll see a particular item and have an instant fascination of that item for life. It's always inanimate objects and they never harm anyone to get them, they will take items into their den and keep them safe in there.
Examples of items: pebbles, string, feathers, twigs, hats etc.
