Prompt for Vesper

Vesper glances around, eyes adjusting slightly to the dark. A flash caught his eye, dark shadows only slightly lighter than inky blackness. He whines slightly in memory of that night. The night he had been abducted by aliens. It had been dark, the moon a crescent, much like this night. But the earthy scent of the sheep pulls him back to now. He forces himself to focus.

Vesper begins at the signal. He starts to move to the first sheep's side, but another one suddenly comes into his limited view as he gets closer, momentarily spooking him. Vesper jumps a bit, quickly scolding himself. They're just sheep. He grits his teeth. Come on!

He tries again, getting two sheep to move forward when he feels something brush against his feet. Vesper whips around, staring at into a dark sheep face. He curses himself again. He needs to focus!

Vesper closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. The sheeps' scent is heavy around him, and yet... he can smell a tiny difference to his left and right. The sheep each have an individual scent! That was it! If he could focus on the sheep and not the tricks his eyes keep pulling on him, Vesper could do this!

The rest of the round, Vesper speeds around the sheep, getting them into their pen in his best time yet for this trial. But would it be enough?

Writing for Matangi.
She couldn't remember the last time they had left so late for a trial. Well, it didn't feel late, but... the sun was hanging so low. The collie's tiger-striped curls bounced gently as she strode beside her handler. The lower lighting of the cattle pens made her seem not as dramatic as usual. Matangi had always been a head turner: curly, agouti, offwhite, brindle, and even glass mask - it was hard not to look at her as she walked into a room. She might've been a short collie at only seventeen inches, but her handler swore it just made her agility work tighter. (Which, perhaps he wasn't wrong! She'd gotten her MACh title behind her now, after all!)

Ah. Agility. What she wouldn't give to be back on the course, running, weaving, bobbing, jumping - she wriggled her toes in the soft dirt as she reminisced. Herding wasn't the worst thing in the world, but Matangi's heart lived in agility. She knew it, her handler knew it, hell - even the cattle seemed to know it. Still, she had a job to do. When they finally reached the area, Matangi realised something very important.

How was she supposed to herd the cattle if she couldn't see them? She let out a nervous whimper; though found a wet nose nuzzling into her fur. She looked, wearily, to Oro. "Don't sweat it," his voice was all warmth and light: honeyed and golden just like his father before him. "Just remember to use your nose, smell them out! You've got this," he offered her a gentle headbutt. Matangi shook her head, taking in a deep breath. He'd already gotten all three of his cattle ribbons; surely he knew what he was talking about. Alright, she decided: she'd rely more on her nose.

"Thanks, kid," she turned to look at him, but Oro was gone. Gone off to his own battle with ducks.

Typhoon was nervous, today he would compete again in an attempt to win the Agility Excellent tittle, but in a very different situation. He has already attempted it twice, unable to defeat the other dogs who did it incredibly well, but maybe today it could be a different day.
The sky was darkening, some shy stars started to appear in the sky that still got orangeish tones as the sun sets. He could see the area marked for the competition, the marquee for the humans to sign and check that everything was correct before participating.
After some seconds, his owner opened his cage and petted him, Typhoon jumping from the car to the ground. He started to whine with anxiety and his owner smiled: “You want to stretch your paws before competing, eh?” She said grabbing a couple bags.
“Go, go! We will get ready!” She exclaimed aiming the male to run a bit and uncharged some of his energy. After some minutes of exercise, Typhoon was still anxious, but the stressing wait was more bearable. His owner slowly prepared him, taking off the collar and harness he would regular use, and put him the special for races, as she gave him a soft kiss on the forehead.
“You’ll do it great, be sure of it, Typh…” The human said. Typhoon started to bark happily at her, wagging his tail as he jumped a bit in a playful position. Soon he would be in the start line, running through the obstacles, under the stars. Maybe this time it would be harder due to the lack of vision, but also more special than ever.

Truffle tilted his head upwards, considering the darkening sky. This had already been a strange day for him- not only had his owner given him his food an entire hour late, now it was getting too dark to herd sheep! He tossed his head and paced in a small circle, eager to get going with the trial. He waited, impatiently and vocalizing his displeasure with the increasingly darkening sky, until finally he was led into the ring with his sheep. Normally they used a mix of black and white sheep, but thankfully someone had thought ahead to some extent and it seemed like this flock was mostly white. At his handler's call, Truffle sprang into action, following his commands and working to move the sheep through the large field. Truffle's tongue started to loll and the light began to leave the sky, causing him to focus intently on whatever white fleece he could make out in the twilight. At last, Truffle finally had managed to move the sheep into their designated area, and he sat back on his hind legs, tongue dropping out of his mouth as he panted and his breath clouded in the air. He was very satisficed with his task- it'd been a challenge with the dusk, but he was proud to see that all of the numbered sheep- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7, were in their pen. He really couldn't figure out why his handler was so insistent that he get back to work in the pasture.
